Cellar bar is closed but intention is for place to become one of Thwaites's "Inns of Character" apparently now that they have taken over ownership.

Now closed according to local press

A decent place to sit outside, well kept cask ales.

Visited for the first time on Saturday 30th July and very impressed.
Beer was good ( Great Heck final Judgement) and bar staff friendly. Nice garden out front to sit in on a nice summer day.
A good find

Interesting cellar bar. If you're over 6ft tall mind your head! A good selection of real ale including beer from Great Heck brewery - quite hard to find.

Our first port of call on our pub-crawl, 12noon Saturday. The beer was so bloody good, in terms of quality, choice and price, that we very nearly gave up on the crawl and stayed all day. What more do you want? You like real ale? This is as good a place as any.

Improved since the new bar manager arrived last year. Good range of ales plus exclusives from Great Heck. Dubious pint of Old Rosie though...

Called in after reading about this pub in one of the CAMRA magazines, and enjoyed the cellar bar look with different rooms. We enjoyed the Great Heck Final Straw and Great Newsome Jems Stout. Found the price of 3.40 steep for half of 3.8% and 4.3% beers though.

I sat outside at the front of this attractive building on a very pleasant sunny July afternoon with my wife, daughter and grandson.
The Great Heck Brewerys Final Judgement (which it seems is exclusive to this pub) was absolutely superb. It was one of the best kept pints that I have drunk for a long time.
No problems with the staff either, they were friendly and helpful and topped up my beer to give a full pint without even being asked to do so. The slight downside was that the outside tables would benefit from a better cleaning regime.
That said, I have sampled many York pubs in the last couple of years and this is definitely one of the better ones.

Another nice York pub with lots of character. We enjoyed some time in the Cellar bar sampling some of the selection of ales.

Has changed dramatically in last 6 years.Very impressed with re-furbishment and has some excellent ales for us fanatics.Resonable prices considering they're locally sourced ales. Was impressed to find they had their own exclusive ale brewed for the premise.Food was excellent, good portions and resonable prices concidering its prepared from scratch on the premise and very tasty! Will definately be back next time i visit york.

The downstairs cellar bar, or the front beer garden are pretty pleasant places to sit and have a drink. Quality of the beer can vary, usually to do with whether you buy a "slow seller" or not. It can get loud in the cellar bar if they have a DJ on (it's not the best layout for that sort of thing) but if your in Lendal, then I would choose this pub every time over Varsity across the road.

Rather pricey. Yet a nice, presentable establishment with generally friendly staff.
|
Cellar bar with nice coves. Very unique chilled out venue, loved it - well worth a visit.
|
Basement bar has good selection of beers, but quite expensive. Bar staff generally quite nice. Sometimes have music themed nights which are usually a laugh.
|
A funny mixed up place. Very large building, which is mostly given over to a fairly smart city centre style hotel. Then on the ground floor, quite a nice restaurant. But in the basement, and out the back, is a large bar, open to public, serving its own (basic) food. Drinks ok, surroundings alright, but can be very hot & smokey, and loud on the nights when they have DJs on. Also it does seem to be a bit of a goth hangout on occasions.
