The Dove, Bury St Edmunds

This pub is a case-study in how to run a cracking ale house: no music, no food, no Sky, no quiz nights, no karaoke, no disco. Just eight-or-so carefully curated local ales well kept by a clued-up landlord. The only downside I know of is the carpets, which used to smell of sick, but apparently they've been cleaned now...!

The Labour Club (Red Shed), Wakefield

A complete one-off. Hipsters would be salivating over the 'authenticity' this place exudes. Basically full of middle-aged bearded socialist CAMRA members, and all the better for it. 4-5 real ales. A real non-frills joint (it really is a shed.) Fri or Sat open mic nights are the best times to go; also does a Tues £1 a pint promo!

Harrys Bar, Wakefield

Small but perfectly formed. Always a well-kept and interesting mix of ales available. Their Tuesday £1 a pint offer is almost too good to be true. Last time I went in the barrel on promo was an outstanding 4.3% pale ale
