Popped in with my partner On the way home the other day for a meal. Found an excitig menu and excellent prices. Had a slight wait as it was a very busy Friday night but was Deffinately worth the wait brilliant home cooked food and it was all fresh which I was amazed about for the price for fresh real food. The homemade chips were amazing and I will be going back to try the stonebaked pizzas. All in all a lovely friendly pub with great beer great food and a nice garden x

Response to previous comments.
Firsty sorry. There must of been a mistake regarding the chips on our behalf, and we are sorry for this.
Regards to the Sunday, we and all our customers believe that 8.95 for a roast dinner is excellent value, especially when we cook everything ourselves and nothing is bought in. Yes there will be a wait when we are busy and this is clearly displayed on the menu before ordering. We are a village pub with a emphasis on freshly cooked food, and it is not dinged in a microwave therefore taking longer. We do everything we can to reduce the waiting time.
Join us for out beer festival 27, 28, 29, 30 may for 30 ales an ciders!

Ordered a portion of chips and it came in a mug, about ten of them! They mut've thought I was a mug to pay for them...

My husband and I went here for a Sunday roast while visiting friends. I was incredibly upset to wait an hour and ten minutes for my meal. The pub was very busy, but this is no excuse. I could hear arguing from the kitchen. When our meals finally arrived, the vegetables were stone cold. The meal was also very dear, you'd pay half the price in a carvery for a better and bigger meal. I'd heard good things about The Sun, but I shant be returning.

Truly wonderful pub. Andy and Tracey are fantastic cooks and offer such great fresh homemade food - never had a bad meal in the 2 and a half years I've been there. Desserts are amazing!!! Love the wide variety of weekly specials. Staff are always friendly and attentive. Sign of a great pub - regulars! And that there are many.

It's a shame that I have to write such a bad review about this place because it is a lovely looking pub, frequented by good people, and with generally okay staff. However, I cannot rate this place higher than a zero due to the rude, misogynistic, arrogant, aggressive and abusive idiot who runs it. Andy is one of the most horrible people I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. He is rude to his staff and customers alike. He has a history of violence, particularly among those close to him. He openly kicks his dog in front of customers, a dog who, I might add, he never takes for walks. If this guy leaves then I'll frequent The Sun once more, but for now I cannot stand the site of this horrible man, and will refuse to go in until he leaves.

We live in Suffolk and have only just discovered this pub as a mid-way meeting point between friends in Billericay and ourselves. Our first visit was Friday 20th and today, Sunday 29th August 2010. After reserving a table for the first visit and then discovering one critical comment on this website we had some trepidation but nonetheless made the initial visit.
We need not have to be concerned. Both visits were thoroughly enjoyable, on both occasions three people had excellent pizzas, two had lamb dishes. Yes, it can be a wait when it is busy, but yes, one should expect that from freshly prepared food.
The beer was excellent, the ambiance terrific and the place was full on both occasions. Drinking and driving laws have destroyed many pubs, this one has the benefit of a thriving community that can walk to a pub.
Everyone has their own opinions but living in the Suffolk/Essex Stour Valley with some of the finest pubs and restaurants in the UK, we would thoroughly recommend the Sun - we cannot/will not be regular visitors but will certainly seek it out when next in the area.

In response to alasdairh. The customer was treated like this becuase he was extreamly rude when he first complained, shouting and swearing at staff. We will not tolerate this. The police were nearly called due to his actions. Three chefs, all aproved the bread in which we cook over 50 each weekend (our first complaint in about 300 so far and counting). The customer was told he was not welcome back. Please sir learn some manners.
It is the Sun Inn's policy not to chase these reviews, however on this occasion we felt the need to clear the air and tell people why we responded in this way.
In response to yog. We sincerely apologise that your evening was not as you liked. The person behind the bar had recently been trainned, and unfortanatly did not confirm to our strict standards. Once again please accpet our apologies.

Went there tonight (father's day) with family. Only one person working behind small bar, waited 20 mins to get served and they were not that busy, he just wasn't in any hurry. That attitude seemed to permeate entire pub as none of the staff really appeared to give a damn.
Food was standard pub fayre and just about edible although my rice was way overcooked. Food prices were reasonable.
They are still showing lots of pumpclips on the walls from microbreweries who used to supply the pub before Shepherd Neame took it over - a bit disingenuous and misleading if you ask me. Supposedly a real ale festival going on, 4 sheps beers and two guests. I had the two guests, neither of which were in particularly good nick.
All in all a major disappointment for my first visit since it became a tied house - it could be so much better.

Poor food, poor service and rude staff.
We've eaten at the Sun on more than a few occassions and generally enjoyed it, however last night was appalling.
We ordered sun dried tomatoe bread from the wood oven which wasnt cooked in the middle and quite raw. We asked the bar staff to taste it and they agreed it wasnt right. The comment from the kitchen was that it should be served like this. Now we've ordered this dish before and it was lovely and crispy and not at all raw.
Personally I dont like raw dough its disgusting and when I asked for it to be removed from the bill I was told that if we didnt pay for it, we wouldnt be welcome back and that it was cooked like that so that they didnt burn the tomatoes.
Well here's some news, learn how to cook. We certainly wont be going back and I'll be making a point of telling as many people as i can how poor the service and food is.
To top it off the manager couldnt be bothered to come down and see us.
Avoid at all costs.

As promised guest aleS are on. Black dog jhb and nelsons revenge are on and still on in march. National cask ale week next month and apparently sheps are taking part. No doubt andy will get more in then! You have to come in more often to see the beers and not once in blue moon.

Went there the other week, guess what a guest ale! 'Burns', however on closer inspection also made by Shepherd Neame. They are promising some in Feb, we will see

Lovely pub. Went in the other evening and it was packed. Whilst we were waiting for a table, we had a pint of Butcombe Gold. We thought this was just a strictly a Sheps pub so we asked. The landlord said that it is a trial at a few selected Shepherd Neame pubs and are allowing guest ales for a period of time and that there are plans in the new year to have a bigger selction of what they are quoting 'beer festivals'. There was Butcombe Gold, Black Prince and Dartmoor, we tried all three plus a Sheps Canterbury Jack and all four served in perfect condition. A fantastic pub and lets hope guest ales come back! Well recommended.

Great pub still, but all Shepherd Neame now as stated, for me, Shepherd Neame does not cut the mustard. Still has a sign at the bar stating guest ales, which we obviuosly never see, a shame. Beer is kept well though, however now quite pricey. Very pleasant staff, just miss the guest ales, a sad loss, I will miss it.

New Manager is now in situ and the Pub is now a purely Shepherd Neame house. This said there are six beers on including Porter and Bishops Finger, and all are in top condition. The food looks as good as ever, and the Pubs is still packed solid. However, the lack of a Guest Beer is regrettable, but still a fine Pub provided you like Shepherd Neame. At least it's not owned by GK!

FYI Scottish barman has gone. Andy, his replacement is much more polite and actually seems to like people and take pleasure in serving a great pint! The food is still great though quite pricey. Look for the spelling mistakes on the blackboard. Charlie & Kim also on their way out: later this month? Shame but good luck in wherever they go/whatever they do.
|
Still a fine Pub with courteous, friendly staff and a fine menu as well as some of the best kept beers you will find anywhere in Essex. Can't speak for those who've previously had problems or issues, but i've never had a problem here, and i'm not a regular or a Hurrah Henry!

Lovely old pub with parts of it dating back to the 16th century. Lots of overhead beams some lower than others, watch your head. The pub seems to be filled with all sorts of things some would say cluttered. Strangely it still seems to work in this pub.
I had a lovely pint of Crouch Vale 'Brewers Gold' just how it should taste. There were 6 beers available on a Wednesday so I guess the landlord does not have to reduce this during the week. The other beers were 3 Mauldon's (Mole Trap, White Adder & Suffolk Pride) Shepherd Neame 'Bishops Finger' and Brakspear 'bitter'. Probably not worth listing as a total free house I think they change constantly. Around the ceiling are all the pump clips from the beers he has previously had.
The pub seems to do a thriving trade with food at lunch time. The blackboard to your right as you enter states the food and prices. I must say looking on the board some of the choices looked better value than others. I must say the food certainly did smell good.
I think I will walk from Kelvedon station next time I visit as its very close and no problem with how much I drink.

Excellent pub. Non-smoking since March. Beer was great last night (and reasonably priced). Landlord is possibly mad but not rude.
|
Best pub in the Feering / Kelvedon area. The publican actually knows something about beer and how to keep it, which is rare these days. They usually have about 6 on, all well kept and mostly from small / micro breweries. Food good but perhaps pricey. No Hurray Henries that I could see, and no prats either. The Scottish barman can sometimes be a bit of a prat, but is generally o.k

Nasty place - full of Horray Henrys.
|
"Charlie the rude landlord" - no manners to new customers and only interested in keeping his regulars. Thought it was funny watching people when their houses were being flooded in October 2003...funny until his pub flooded and he did nothing but moan and gripe about it for years after. Wife is rude too, and the pub is full of snobs!!! You could do better than spending your money here.

Went there for a couple of pints last night. What a great pub. Wide selection of real ales - all well kept. Friendly staff and the locals don't bite either! The pub looks like a real pub - loads of atmosphere, comfortable. We didn't eat, but the food selection looked good - we had a look at the meals people were eating and it all looked excellent. We will certainly be back there to try it out!

Superb Pub with great food, friendly staff and an exceptionally well kept selection of Real Ale. No regular beers here, as all are regularly rotated, but Landlord's favourites will often include beers from Archers and Cottage breweries. Try the Steak & kidney Pud and the Chocolate Torte for excellent Pub grub
