Popped in yesterday afternoon for a Christmas Drink after a Boxing Day drive. Although having lived in Sussex all my life and driven past this pub hundreds of times this was my first visit.
Extremely welcoming landlord & landlady who made us feel very welcome indeed. Nick is very personable and friendly and makes you feel at home instantly.
The Christmas ale was delightful and the mulled wine very tasty. Nice ambience with a log fire adding to the cosy atmosphere. We didn't eat but having checked out the online menu we'll certainly be sure of a return visit to sample the food that is on offer.
I'd recommend a visit, certainly based on our experiences from yesterday.

The Coach and Horses is a brilliant place to have a small or large get together. On the times I've been there, be it for a quiet drink or a full on meal with over 15 people, the management went out of their to accommodate us. The management and their employees are welcoming and friendly and as an added bonus the food that they serve is superb!! Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!!!!

agree, food is excellent, although plastic sauce sachets have arrived! Car park unfortunately littered with dog poo. Nice pub though in convenient location and friendly staff.

This is an excellent, friendly pub. I wish the new owners all the very best. They are working very hard to create a popular pub and restaurant. The food is the best!!

As pub has now re-opened with new licensee my visit was with trepidation. However, we had a warm welcome from bar staff and the new "credit crunch" menu was an absolute bargain. Fresh sliced ham, egg and amazingly crisp chips for myself and three tasty bangers, egg and chips for my companion. No plastic packets of sauce either but real pots of mustard. Rest of the menu looked great. Bar and restaurant get top marks; when the beer garden, childrens playground and flower beds get tidied up the pub will get 9+ from me. Staff said the outside was due to get done shortly.

I went tonight with my wife to the Coach and Horses. WOW has it changed.
What used to be a really good pub many years ago was utterly ruined by a prentious landlord who was openly contemptuous of his customers.
Thank the Lord he has now gone and tonight we went in to a totally different atmosphere, busy happy and with food OUT OF THIS WORLD for just 4.95 per plate. My wife had Bar-B-Q pork ribs with chips and good salad garnish, I had Pork and Apple Pie, wonderful Puff pastry and vegetables that were all fresh, cooked A Dente and actually TASTED.
Utter bargain, really friendly....just go and try...EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT

Now open again

Now shut but not sure for how long.

Now back on track at last and getting busier by the day. Food is freshly cooked and beer prices have dropped, 3 regular ales on IPA Harveys and Speckled Hen. Live Music every friday. Worth a trip back if you havent been for a good few months.

Visited this pub after a recommendation by a friend. I can only assume that my friend last visited the pub several years ago as both myself and my partner found it fairly dismal.
The pub itself is actually quite nice and looks like it has undergone a recent refurbishment, nice tables, fresh walls, clean toilets etc and the staff (two waitresses and a woman behind the bar) were quite pleasant. The problem I have with The Coach and Horses is with the food. The menu looks quite appetising but the food itself is a far cry from the description, very bland lacking almost everything that you would associate with a tasty lunch.
The problem I feel is, the ingredients (and possibly the cooking itself). For example, as a starter I had Pate and for the price of it (and this pub is not the cheapest in the area) I would something reasonably tasty. Not so, the Pate in this case had obviously come from the local Cash and Carry and probably the discount bucket, utterly grim. Next I had a pasta dish which lacked all flavour, I had to add a ton of salt just to make it taste of anything, and that ended up being salt. My partner, who normal shovels down most things, was equally unimpressed. It seems that only the most basic, bare minimum and cheapest ingredients go into the dishes and it shows (or tastes).
I am by no means a snob or a food critic but when I pay 40ish for 2 starters 2 mains and 2 drinks I expect to be left content and The Coach and Horses failed miserably to achieve this.
Nice place, rubbish food, I will not be returning until I see a big sign outside saying new chef and new menu.

6.9.08 Have just been to lunch waited an hour for the food to be brought to us wouldn't have minded but it was only ham egg and chips, not exactly mind blowing hard to cook! When it arrived it was not very hot and not very appetising, very disappointed. Had not been there since had a makeover and will not be going back, looking at the small amount of customers in there perhaps it would be time for a re think.

sobrien you have only reviewed 1 pub and the review was made on the day you signed up for this site which sounds very dodgy, i think you maybe an owner or work here

This is one of our local pubs and have never had an issue. We always have a good chat and a laugh with the people working there, and when we have eaten there, do not find the prices any higher than other pubs in the area. We have spent many a pleasant evening sipping beer and sitting in the garden with friends and would highly recommend it.

Terrible, overpriced Belgiam type bar in the middle of nowhere. Not how it used to be many moons back. Not sure how long it will stay open for as you can't run a pub with no custom. Rude and unhelpful barmaid!
AVOID!

In my humble opinion this place was far better when it was the Acre Tavern. There is a touch of nouveau silliness about it now.

Visited on a wednesday evening, 3 of us, no bitter available ! stayed till 10 pm( arrived at 8:30) when the landlord called last orders and informed us that as there were less than 5 people in the bar he would be closing early! ordered and drank last two drinks as we were about to finish our drinks landlord said we must leave. Bar staff then said to my partner I should not have served you in the first place as you were rude about not having bitter available!! she was not rude. landlord then said to my eastern european partner who has been in this country for 15 years " you should learn to be polite in this country" The barmaid was from eastern europe too !! As we were leaving I said I will not be back was then given a torrent of abuse from landlord " F@cking good because I have been waiting for the last hour for you to PIss off, if I came round to your living room and sat there would you want me to leave" STRANGE on a quiet wednesday evening I would have thought they would have been glad of our business. RACIST STAY away..

"This is how a pub should be"! Ridiculous. It's in the middle of nowhere, tarted up to look like a Belgian bar, ridiculous prices. Nothing like a pub at all.

This is how a pub should be! On entering we were given a warm greeting by the staff behind the bar. The menu was presented to us, and it was noted that they can cater for dietary requirements. When we explained that I was vegetarian & lactose intolerant, the staff were full of suggestions, which was so welcome. Most staff in eateries don't even seem to know what lactose intolerant is! I opted for the vegetarian kebabs, whilst my partner went for the chicken pie. We have eaten as some of the best restaurants around, and can honestly say that the food was better at the Coach & Horses, than many a top London restaurant - we can't recommend this put highly enough. Despite others comments that the interior doesn't suit - poppycock, it's very much in keeping and sympathetic with the period of the pub. We'll be back!

Visited for the first time today. Not what I'd call a pub, more of a restaurant,so Im not sure it should be on this site.Guess it depends on your taste but the place is done out in what I'd call contemporary old fashioned - it didn't work for me but my partner thought it was nice. The staff were friendly and helpful.Thought the roast was a bit overpriced at 9.50 and the drink was a bit pricey,3.50 for a Magners. The roast beef was really tough but the rest of the veg were excellent. We were asked how the meal was but as typical Englishmen we said it good.Apple and Almond tart with Amaretto was good
