user reviews of the Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Great place - my idea of a real pub. No frills, just great beer and a very warm welcome from the lady behind the bar and a big, friendly black Labrador who apparently comes in every Friday night. My favourite pub on our weekend mini-crawl round Shrewsbury.
scoobybooze2 - 11 May 2022 12:36
Good barman, 6 ales on, I had Thornbridge 'The Wednesday' [nice pint] & Oakham 'Musashi' [nice zesty ale].
alehippy - 28 Sep 2018 12:21
A week away (Friday lunch).

Absolute gem, tucked away behind one of the many churches. Good range of beers and I opted for M&B Mild, simply because I hadn't seen it for ages.

Good service and the banter was excellent - especially three visitors trying to negotiate for 3 pork pies for a fiver!
ellisref - 10 Jun 2018 09:02
Not too much to add to previous reviews (bar Snarling Mallard’s).

No complaints about the quality of the beer with a couple of pints of Station Bitter a good start to the day. £3.30 from memory.

Busy on a Saturday afternoon but got a table relatively quickly.

Food smelled good and the £2 pork pie looked a decent option.

duchyjim - 16 Feb 2018 21:40
beer not so good this time round found it a struggle to drink and they had sounded the (afternoon) bell for last orders.
anonymous - 18 Jan 2018 17:00
Quaint pub, smart interior, landlord helpful, 6 ales on; I had Sonehouses'' ''Station Bitter'', nice pint. Pub does not possess a smoking area.
alehippy - 16 Sep 2017 16:05
Quite a big open room of a pub, not massive or anything though but quite a lot of space to find a spot. The bar is a U shape with a few things nailed to the top of it, including a gun and a hammer. There are various pictures of Shrewsbury and what an old bar back in the day used to look like, the lighting of the place does feel a bit bright which may ruin the atmosphere a tad bit but when I came in the pub wasn't that busy so it is hard to tell. On the bar there was a mix of beers from the local staple and further afield. These included Clouded Minds Clout Stout, Exmoor Fox, Stonehouse Station Bitter, Stonehouse Zephyr Pale Ale, Salopian Lemon Dream, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Abbeydale Absolution. I went for the Clout Stout at 3.30 and it was a nice pint and well kept. I would say this is worth a look in if you are around Shrewsbury.

15th century pub, small and low beamed single roomed affair. Proved to be a little haven for good ale, range of up to six beers including Sharp's Doom Bar, Stonehouse Station Bitter, Three Tuns Stout and Timothy Taylor Landlord. Good condition. Friendly service.

Found this place better on this visit. A couple of decent ales to drink in a reasonably freindly pub.
anonymous - 12 Aug 2014 18:06
Had a fantastic evening this Sunday just gone. Very friendly and helpful barstaff, great quality beer and range. Lovely pub too.

We'll certainly be back.
vicpark - 20 Feb 2014 20:12
Excellent characterful centrally positioned pub. Really good selection of traditional ciders, particularly Old Rosie.
JoeWalling - 25 Nov 2013 13:58
A nice historic pub in the old part of Shrewsbury with several hand pumps.
16jamesdoc - 29 Oct 2013 16:17
Found this by accident! Seems very old, with lots of character. Great selection of ale. Bar staff friendly and helpful. Apparently this was one of the original no smoking pubs before the ban. Well worth finding for a visit.
PhilE - 3 Oct 2013 18:54
Quaint pub in an historic street just away from the High St with timber beams throughout.

Old photo's adorn the walls & this is another pub with a large beer clip collection.

7 ales on tap and 1 real cider. My pint from Byatt's in Coventry was good and again only £3.00.

Busy pub even at 1pm with plenty of regulars and passers by like myself.

A very good pub, I can understand why this has appeared regularly in GBB guide.
lezford - 29 Jul 2013 14:16
Great pub offering a warm welcome, tantalising food and a good range of cask ales. the Three Tuns Stout was superb on my visit. Surely a 'must visit' when in Shrewsbury. 10/10.
wobblybob - 15 Mar 2013 21:41
Great pub tucked away at the top of the town, the original non-smoking pub. Always an eclectic range of ales in the line up, in particular for my taste the pale ales e.g. Oakhams. Oh Bliss.
mim - 20 Jan 2013 20:38
First stop on the crawl for the visit of the U's to Shrewsbury on 27 October. The beers were good, I had the Marble Manchester Bitter, Stonehouse Bitter and Salopian Dark heart (I think) stout which was excellent. As another reviewer has said the interior isn't up to much, the restaurant style tables and place mats give the interior an appearance at odds with my idea of a comfortable (it ain't), relaxing pub. The food was adequate, though I wasn't prepared for the reaction of the guvnor to my request to order food, a "no, you can't but my colleague over there will take your order" - you don't order it at the bar but at a separate point which of course I didn't know. This attempt at humour might not go down well with some, but it's still a decent enough place to visit. 7.5/10
Monkdawallydahonk - 12 Nov 2012 15:42
I came in here following a recommendation from the landlord of Loggerheads. I sampled a good amount of Three Tuns Stout, brewed by Bishop's Castle and it was gorgeous!

Sadly the exterior was far better than the interior, but these are only minor gripes. Again I ended up chatting to the regulars and great craic was had!

Definitely worth a visit.
realalerules1983 - 22 Sep 2012 19:11
I still maintain my previous views of this pub. The beer and cider selection is good. But the pub itself lacks character inside. It reminds me a little of the Bree Louise in London. Nevertheless, I wouldn't want to drink in Shrewsbury without visiting the Three Fishes. On our late Saturday afternoon visit, the pub was busy. The beer choice was Stonehouse Station Bitter, Thornbridge Jaipur, Sharps Doom Bar, Taylor Landlord, Marble Draft & Three Tuns Stout. Ciders were Addlestones & Westons Traditional Scrumpy & Old Rosie. Westons Country Perry was also on.
blue_scrumpy - 25 Jun 2012 20:43
o dear looks good from the outside not bad inside but totally spoilt by the way too bright lighting , spoilt the atmosphere, the real ales were fine condition ok.
DAKING - 16 May 2012 11:40
I've only sampled a small number of Shrewsbury's many pubs but this has been the best by far. Excellent range of beers - any pub that has high quality pale, bitter and dark beer all available and selling well has to be doing something right. The young lady who served us was incredibly friendly too. Can get very busy on a Friday evening as you'd expect a town centre pub to.
jarofporter - 14 Mar 2012 16:30
Well what a super little pub. You just never know what to expect when visting this little boozer. Sometimes it is a very quiet back street little pub at others you cannot get through the door. Thee doest seem to be any pattern to the busy times either. Just as likely to be busy on a tuesday evening as it is on a Saturday. My last vist there was today, Busy on food. Looks like they have recently changed the menu. I havent eaten here but the food looks good. Fabulous pint of Station Bitter and Doom Bar. Always seems a bit dark in this pub but not really sure about what could be done about that. Suits the winter however as is very cosy.
beeryumyum - 15 Dec 2011 19:05
Monday afternoon - pub shut (sticks to the "old fashioned" hours during the week). We went back the next day- in the evening but it didn't really "hit the spot" with us. Although there are still some nice features we felt that it had been "opened-out" a bit and lacked a bit of character - compared to the wonderful exterior. [No doubt somebody will write in saying that the bar has been unaltered for 14 centuries] but it wasn't quite there for us.Beer was OK with a mix of local and national cask brands (what is Sharps Doom Bar - brewed in Cornwall - doing in a pub in Shropshire??!!) Anyway, we thought about eating but decided to head off somewhere else. The pub is of course in a fabulous setting with narrow cobbled lanes and passgeways nearby and the imposing church in front and is a welcome respite from the busy shopping areas nearby. I suppose you should pay it a visit when in Shrewsbury and we will probably go back again just to see if our initial views have been changed.
mcroyal - 9 Dec 2011 12:41
Quaint old pub with sloping half timebered ceiling in the bar. The Stonehouse Station Bitter was okay but have had better pints of it. Can't say I can see what all the fuss is about this place, found it rather average.
anonymous - 27 Oct 2011 16:40
We really enjoyed this pub, bar staff and regulars were very friendly, excellent range of beers, we tried the Stonehouse Station Bitter, The Fine Ales of Scotland Jarl, Woodland Midnight Stout and Uncommonly Fine Ales Avanlanche (another good one). All the beers were in absolutely perfect condition - the Jarl was excellent. Seemed like a friendly, busy place on a Saturday night. We can't wait to visit again.
Roy22 - 2 Oct 2011 17:29
My time of place.... Very busy on a sat lunch, had to dive in to get a snug table for four. Station bitter was excellent, with a choice of four more and the food was even better..... Enchillada from the special board. Only gripe is you have to buy the beer at the bar and the food from another kiosk.... Who wants to queue twice? Still, i would trade all the pubs in my one horse chav town for this one.....
Mappiman - 18 Jun 2011 22:03
Cracking olde worldy pub, had a decent choice of beers and good food too, my only gripe with this place was the lack of any beer garden or outdoor seating to the front, maybe on a less hazy day that wouldn't matter.
ToxtethOGrady - 22 Apr 2011 23:41
Oh my God !!! The Beers here today (29th Jan 2011) were simply AMAZING !

Dark Star - 'Sussex Extra Stout'
Oakham - 'Bishop's Farewell'
Sharps - 'Doom Bar'
and the absolutely gorgeous ... Thornbridge - 'Kipling',
and all kept in perfect condition.

Cracking little pub !

Would have scored it a '9', but for the fact that you have to ask each and every time for a 'top-up'.
SecRATary - 6 Feb 2011 23:56
Just a note to say this pub is closed between 3 and 5 Mon - Thurs afternoons
Martinsh - 31 Jan 2011 22:47
Good pub, spent a few hours in here mainly because Meals started at 6 but, got to use some excuse. Enjyed the Doombar.
andyaston - 19 Dec 2010 12:40
Popped in here again tonight whilst I had 45 mins to change trains. Still the same as ever - though I have never seen it so quiet as when I first entered - due to the time of day. I had a pint of O'Hanlons Entire Stout which was excellent. Also on tap were Deuchars, Landlord, Sharps Doom Bar and a couple of others.

Yes, the interior is rather plain, and tarting it up would attract a more upmarket clientele, but that misses the point of this pub. You go here for the beer (food also) and great conversation, not to marvel in your surroundings - they are incidental.

BTW, evening food does not start till 6pm.
Martinsh - 2 Dec 2010 23:17
Great selection of ales, ciders and perries, plus cracking pork pies - what more can you wish for. Had Thornbridge Kipling, O'Hanlons Port Stout and Country perry (not necesary in this order), all well kept. Lively atmosphere - perhaps a bit too busy for my liking and great historic timber framed building.
Perry_Mason - 28 Nov 2010 18:28
I once met a couple who used to run this pub and now run a pub in Suffolk. Hearing about it, I have always been intrigued as to what it is like. From the outside, it looks like a fabulous building. But inside is a bit plain. However, the beer and cider selection makes up for this - Black Sheep Best, Thornbridge Kipling, Sharps Doom Bar, TT Landlord, Oakham Citra & White Dwarf, Salopian Requiem and O'Hanlons Port Stout were the beers; Addlestones, Westons Traditional Scrumpy, Old Rosie & Country Perry were the ciders/perry. The white walls have a few pictures on them. But the overall appearance is uninspiring and the harsh lighting doesn't help. Close your eyes and enjoy a pint or two.
blue_scrumpy - 25 Nov 2010 20:44
Marvellous beers today. Oakham Ales Tutankamoun if thats how you spell it and Hyndles Blonde I think with an Elderflower hue, may not have got that quite right but damn splendid anyhow. And as previous review states a mighty fine homemade pork pie from the local butcher. Try the pie with a side of mango chutney - fantastic. Three pints and I was one happy bunny.
ThePrincess - 25 Sep 2010 15:56
Lovely old pub with good beers. In fact this is the local CAMRA branch's Pub of the Year. Try the pork pies, made by a local butcher, and to die for!
arihall - 20 Sep 2010 16:04
Very good establishment, place was full, pity so many people sitting up the bar, had to order drinks over peoples shoulders - nice pint of Addlestones Cloudy Cider @ 2.80
KeithP - 29 Aug 2010 12:08
Oh my goodness, another yummy lunch, and a good few pints - always a splendid 5 or 6 to choose from, Timmy Taylor always splendid too. Still the bestest alehouse in the country if not the world..............
ThePrincess - 4 Apr 2010 13:10

Tucked away on a back street, but please do make the effort. Great beer, good wide choice in perfect condition. Busy vibrant atmosphere , of likeminded beer lovers.

Local Camra top brass abound here and so should you. The landlord should give classes - he is a master of his trade.

High consistent standard. Top of the list for any pubcrawl.

Verdict : Start rather finish your crawl from here and do the beer justice.

Interesting to see all these new entries in the Top 40, despite no corresponding reviews. TALLTORQUIL has clearly got too much time on his hands.
gaypostman - 25 Mar 2010 00:14
Loads of beers with a few local and a bright airy interior, only time for the Ironbridge stout which probably was the beer of the crawl.
Booze_Allen - 11 Jan 2010 17:55
Called in to this wonderful pub again yesterday afternoon and more guest ales were on show. I first had a pint of Doom Bar, then a pint of Gem Ale and finally a pint of Brewer's Gold. All were very good indeed. Why this pub is not in the BITE Top 20 I don't know. I will keep on coming here whenever I'm in the town centre.
SilentButDeadly - 29 Nov 2009 11:44
Good pub, ale always tip top, well worth a visit for the ale.
freddie09 - 9 Nov 2009 12:01
Called at the Fishes yesterday while in town. What a great pub, with old beams and a more mature clientele. The beer choice was excellent, with Bishops Farewell, Tim Taylors Landlord, Bath Ales Gem, Hobsons Mild, Thornbridge Wild Swan, and an excellent pint of Sharps Doom Bar. Always friendly staff and the food is very good too.
wolf1778 - 30 Oct 2009 12:32
Nice old pub, with a good range of real ales on (many local, including a very good Darwin's Origin from the Salopian Brewery). However, it did have a slightly 'cold' atmosphere which was difficult to pin down despite the place being busy enough. Still, shouldn't complain too much as it is obviously a decent place for a pint.
rpadam - 30 Sep 2009 20:55
The Three Fishes is a fine traditional 15th century building located in a narrow street in the oldest part of Shrewsbury, just off the High Street.

Outside it describes itself as "The Original Smoke Free Public House" and inside we learn that it was first recorded as an ale house in 1780.

It has a low black-beamed interior and is part carpeted, part flagstoned. It slopes a bit downwards towards the back.

A mirror by the bar advertising Southams Ales and Stout indicates that the pub was formerly owned by W T Southam Brewery of nearby Coton Hill.

Beers on during my visit were Woods Shropshire Lasd, Millstone Brewery Tiger Rut, Sharps Doom Bar, Timmy Taylors, Hopback Summer Lightning ( a rare sighting this ) and Hobsons Best. The Hobsons Best - 2.60p - was a fine tasty pint. The pub has been a GBG regular in recent years.

This was one of my favourites of all the Shrewsbury pubs that I did.
JohnBonser - 22 Sep 2009 17:31
I said I'd call again in my previous blog and sure enough did so last night. Among ales on offer were Ludlow Best & Bishop's Farewell. Had 2 pints of Ludlow Best which were superb. As Arnie said in the Terminator films: I'll be back!
SilentButDeadly - 12 Sep 2009 10:47
I'm another member of the Three Fishes Fan Club! Excellent choice of real ales on offer, great food, lovely atmosphere and superb landlord - what more could you ask for? Had 3 pints of Stonehouse Station Bitter in here yesterday and each one went down velvety smooth. I must call in again very soon. 10/10
SilentButDeadly - 6 Sep 2009 13:13
I love this pub and always visit when in town. Managed to get a table this visit so we had a meal as well as sampling the excellent ales. Cropton Blackout was great, a new beer for us, and we also enjoyed beers from Phoenix and Purple Moose.
gillhalfpint - 3 Sep 2009 09:42
I like it in here but theres something missing , the beers good , its friendly , staff are good , but i`m not intrested whos playing who at tennis or where the best resturants are , maybe i`m just to working class
trenchlad - 4 Jul 2009 23:19
Mmm, my favouratist pub in the world, nice pint of Endless Summer today, although tough to choose as Doom Bar on too! Nice Steak Pie and chips to go, Dave the landlord as welcoming as ever - if you like ale and good simple pub food this is the one.
ThePrincess - 27 Jun 2009 20:34
I love this little place. Timber framed, with stone floor. The girl behind the bar was really nice and chatty.

Several real ales on; i had an excellent Monkey Town MILD and a great Sharpe's Doom Bar

I will have to visit again
Archivist - 26 May 2009 13:06
Top quality Timothy Taylor Landlord was my choice, but I could have chosen from seven other ales including Sharp's Doombar. Small and friendly. Tasty pork pies. Probably the best real ale pub in Shrewsbury.
dableywolf - 26 Apr 2009 22:00
Good for real ale and real cider, but the interior character and atmosphere isn't to my liking. Regulars also seem to be treated better than visitors. 7/10

Located on Fish Street, by St Alkmund's Church, in the heart of Shrewsbury.
dpaajones - 13 Apr 2009 14:52
Not as good as last visit but still ok , seems to have gone a bit yuppy for me . I remember Carol Decker (t/pau) working here but i also remember the keyboard players girlfriend at the Unicorn in telford
trenchlad - 29 Mar 2009 00:14
Didn't the lead singer from T'Pau serve here before she made it big? Anyway great little boozer despite that.
Snecky - 5 Feb 2009 12:33
Located in a small, cobbled & hilly street this looks like a very traditional olde worlde pub from the outside. Inside it is compact with a varied choice of real ales. The Sharp's Doom Bar was in fine form. We would have stayed a bit longer but we got accosted by the pub bore & decided to make our excuses & leave.
happytyskie - 2 Feb 2009 14:25
Favourite pub out of 20+ visited last weekend in Shrewsbury. The pint of Oakham "Bishop's Farewell" was top notch and the food was really delicious. The barman/landlord? was very friendly and welcoming.9/10 without a doubt
fat_beer_badger - 29 Jan 2009 15:10
Pleasant enough, one roomer, with a more mature clientele. Four real ales on when I called and the pint I had was very well kept. Not a lot of atmosphere as it was pretty quiet. It's a decent pub.
ROBCamra - 29 Jan 2009 14:34
(Hubby says) excellent selection of ales - well kept and often changed. This is a very convenient pub if you're shopping. The trick is to get in early and get a table - it's not a big pub. Printed menu but well presented food (proper chef) at a fair price. A few sparrows in beards at the bar but no baseball caps and swearing. I admired the way they toughed out their no smoking policy before it became law anyway. Interesting history - see print on wall inside. A good pub.
Ihateclubmans - 20 Jan 2009 19:31
Its proud declaration of itself as a non smoking pub is now a littleredundant and given its wonderful location on an ancient street, one might expect a slightly better establishment but this is still as solid a crowd pleasing, traditional pub as they come, with no nonsense ales and no nonsense food.
BoehmBawerk - 2 Oct 2008 17:03
Fab pub just off the High Street. When the chat dies down all you can hear is the ticking of the clock.
Top selection of real ales and range of food.
LickeyEndBooze - 26 Aug 2008 22:24
Haven't been in for a few months, beer selection still fantastic, Newby Wyke on at the moment, food still great too, a lovely, friendly town centre pub
ThePrincess - 28 Mar 2008 20:26
This pub was a favourite before the smoking ban as it was a non smoking pub, and it is still a gem for real ales.
gillhalfpint - 26 Mar 2008 23:22
I took my Mum to this pub for Mothers Day today actually, for a lovely lunch. It's great, but I probably wouldn't go again. Plus, she smokes. But yeah it was a nice pub to visit, we both had main courses; she had a pork loin in cider with all the trimmings and new potatoes and gravy, I had the Three Fishes dish (haddock, plaice, scampi) - as I was in the Three Fishes - which came with chips and some salad, and we both had pudding; I opted for the last Sticky Toffee Pudding (the presentation could have been way better. I understand the lad serving the meals is probably younger than me, but I thought someone had used the plate as a toilet after a Saturday night curry crawl), and my Mum opted for the chockarockapie. And we had lemonade, because I couldn't afford the ale! But it was alright. Nice atmosphere and lovely staff.
APPLEFLAPtopia - 2 Mar 2008 19:53
Found this pub near our hotel in Shrewsbury centre. Was pleasantly suprised, good beer, good food and even a quiz in the evening. So good had to go back twice in the same night.
adrian7886 - 15 Jan 2008 13:07
The middle of Shrewsbury is surprisingly lacking in good pubs, IMHO. This is definitely one of the better ones.
grosslysloshed - 7 Jul 2007 12:39
This has become my favourite Shrewsbury pub. An excellent and changing selection of real ales. Superb old worlde atmoshphere. Friendly bar team. I wish the opening hours included all day on Sunday, and regret their decision to suspend Sunday lunches for the summer. Thoroughly recommended as a meeting place to enjoy a quiet pint or two though.
Dai_Dant - 2 Jul 2007 11:46
What a lovely pub, great great real ales and fabulous value food, really good team behind the bar too. We would go back again and again.
ThePrincess - 8 May 2007 21:22
This is a Non-Smoking pub. It is not a pub with a non-smoking area. I still think this is a distinction worth making, even though the law is changing.
giordano - 23 Feb 2007 20:35
great pub with the non smoking atmosphere.what a difference that makes.it gets my vote.will defintely call again when in shrewsbury
westhead - 7 Feb 2007 18:41
Great pub with a good selection of tasty beers. Food not bad either. As a non-smoker, the non-smoking policy is a real winner. Always have at least 2 pints here on a Shrewsbury crawl.
TheGunner - 18 Dec 2006 23:30
I have visited this pub only once and quite recently and I will definitely go back sometime. Nice, small, pub, friendly landlord and not too far from the railway station.

We had a good meal which we felt was reasonably priced, it has a non-smoking policy throughout which is fantastic.

The beer was great, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Three Fishes.
QuickLook - 16 Dec 2006 17:22
Modern-ish ale house complementing the Loggerheads.
Uncle_Dunkel - 27 Feb 2006 01:38
The no-smoking policy is a real winner. The beer is fabulous, though sometimes (I agree with joegreen) a bit on the expensive side. Welcoming atmosphere, good food too.
summerfreak - 25 Jul 2005 13:47
Jacknicholson got it right, and I pleased to report it's just as good now as in 2003. I would have said town centre prices rather than pricey.
shropspy - 22 Jun 2005 18:09
Very pleasant: excellent beer and squeaky-clean. Pricey, a little.
joegreen - 16 May 2005 13:53
Fantastic!!
Steve - 30 Aug 2004 21:39
I loved this pub when i was in Shrewsbury in October 2000. Adnams
Bitter was in perfect condition on two seperate days and the food is fantastic.
I was talking to an older couple and after a while the women asked me if I was
a American, I replied No, I'm a Canadian and she said Oh, you're one of us! I loved her response
as my mum was born in England. I highley recommend this pub and Loggerheads when you're in Shrewsbury.
Scott - 28 Aug 2004 21:06
I supose im byist about this pub as im now 1 of the barmaids however the new landlord and lady have only changed it only for the better and it has only a more welcoming caracther it has great beers and excellent food an alrond good place to be
alex - 9 Aug 2004 13:50
This 15th century building in the town centre, with its heavy timbers and flagstones, makes it a pub worth visiting. This is the only non smoking pub in Shrewsbury and with no music or TV to distract you from enjoying the choice of at least 4 real ales, what more can you ask for! A real gem.
jacknicholson - 21 Sep 2003 08:46
The Three Fishes Pub , Fish Street centre of Shrewsbury is a must for non-smokers . Real ale up to 5 good beers and freshly prepared delicious food; in clean and welcoming surroundings. LocalCAMRA pub for 2003 and 2002 , my friendly local , no juke box , no TV , no pool table, how pubs used to be , but without smoking and with ood beer an food . Try it , and FIND A WELCOME
Martin Price - 7 Jun 2003 21:46
The Fishes is my regular as I live in Shrewsbury, infact it is the only place to drink. Good beer, friendly, all round top place.
Niell - 27 May 2003 12:04
Three Fishes is my regular as I live in Shrewsbury (someone has to! If I could Take 3 things to a dessert island, this pub would be one of them. CAMRA Pub of the Year 2002 and again for this year 2003 for Shrewsbury & West Shropshire Region
Nigel - 2 May 2003 08:32
The only non-smoking pup in Shrewsbury, the Three Fishes is very small and was built about 400 years ago. The landlord is also the chef and he's not bad at it either. The Fishes has a good selection of hand-pulled beers and usually ne or two guest beers as well. There is no loud piped music and no fruit machine.
It's a place to go for a drink and a natter.
