What in the world has happened to this pub I was here in January this year went back again yesterday for some reason not a nice feeling in this pub now. had the Ringwood best which was bloody awful. went to the George up the road and was informed it changed hands recently. I've got my answer. I may give it another chance in a couple of months but with other pubs in the area I doubt it. I will rate this 1 just because it is open

Guided by the new management I am sure that this is now a very good pub for dogs.
Not good for drinkers and eaters I fear.

Very popular with local gents with dogs (lots; have they told their wives that they are taking the dog out for a long walk?).
The juke box can make conversation difficult (don't understand how that goes with the 'dog-walkers'?); so not a quiet country pub.
Basic pub grub at reasonable prices. Good and well kept beers.
Good if you appreciate old-fashioned boozer pubs. People who are not keen on too many dogs or juke boxes might prefer the George in the centre of Mere.

This still has much of the feel of a village pub and it sells good cask ale well kept. It also has the rare merit of not being Hall & Woodhouse.
Well worth looking in if you are passing (as long as the Juke Box is not being played).

This was one of my favourite local haunts back in the 70s and 80s and it sounds like its gone from strength to strength. Will certainly be looking in next time i'm in that neck of the woods

Highly recommended. Stopped here with wife and kids travelling back from Devon.

The food surpassed all expectations. Fresh, delicious food, beautifully presented, great value. Burgers were freshly home-made in organic homemade bread rolls. Fish and chips was some of the best I've had - skate in beer batter with jenga chips, home-mushed peas and homemade tartar sauce - excellent.

Lady behind the bar made us really welcome and the place felt like a real pub - locals seemed a pleasant bunch.

Couple of real ales included Harveys. We all ate well with drinks for a bill of about 30 - would have cost a load more elsewhere. Wish we could have stayed on for the night!

Nice little pub! Lovely little country town Mere.. (At least the 'Butt' was open at 5.00pm... the George Inn opposite didn't open until 6.00pm.. us towny's can't get used to these country opening hours!!)
An old pub with 'nooks' and wooden beams(mind your head!) and what looked like old church pews in the corner! Marvelous. An ancient dart-board facility, a v.small open-air courtyard in the middle of the building, big enough for 2x small tables. Locals seemed jolly enough. I agree with 'anon' below, Mere is excellent place to visit, if you like NT gardens check out Stourhead at Stourton, and while there refresh your palate at the 'Spread Eagle' pub in the grounds (the sort of venue you only see in films and period dramas..!) Happy drinking! TJ

Local serving range of bitters eg Butcombe, Green King, Bass and lagers. Single bar, service is usually good, and can usually find a quiet spot to sit & have a drink/meal. At weekends they occasionally have musical acts & other events eg hog roasts - which adds to the atmosphere. Stayed in one of the nice B&B ensuite rooms across the courtyard which looks out on the garden. Great value at 45 for the two of us.
Plenty of interesting places to visit from this location eg Stourhead, Salisbury, Stonehenge and just an hour from the Dorset coast.
