Gone.

Developers have turned it into flats.

Shame, it was a decent enough boozer.

Used to drink in here a few years back and thought the beer was much better then - been a bit hit and miss the last few times I've been in. Refurb is a big improvement though.

Popped in here to watch an England match recently and was pleasantly surprised. Backstreet locals pub really, quiet on a Tuesday night but it has a big screen and an excellent ale selection, great to see a couple of dark ales on too. Worth a visit.

Moved in up the road a year ago now and drinking here increasingly regularly. Always a good range of Ale on , very reasonably priced after paying London prices. Generally at least one dark ale on most nights and the Oscar Wilde Mild goes down a treat.
Good atmosphere when the rugby is on and staff very friendly and know their beer. Of a week night when its quiet the barmaids will often choose some excellent music to play , great stuff from the 60's , Johnny Cash / Elvis etc.
Bar snacks include a varied range of pickled eggs / onions etc but the Mrs has banned me from eating them !

Well I previously rated this pub as a 1 (just in case it was the only 1 left). But I must admit to being pleasantly surprised at the state now. The decor can only bo described as brilliant, the toilets are cleann and do not smell like they usded to. Thr beer tastes as though the staff, wwhoever they are, know how to look after ale, an absolutely outstanding result !!!!!!!
Just a pity the labdlord, I presume, cannot talk more to visitors instead of apparently only looking after regular customers,I appreciate that regulars are always needed, but please think of others.Rating now increased to 7, would be higher if the landlord spoke to visitors.

Needing somewhere to watch the Chelsea FA Cup game, we found ourselves at the White Horse - well, they do have 3 TV's !!

Not visited this pub for years but, pleased to say, it has recently been renovated, and re-opened about four months ago ; and very smart and modern it now looks too.

And what to drink then a - given a choice of eight real ales !! I tried the Maldon Gold and Ramsbury ... and good they were too. Sadly, i had just missed the Amarillo.

Food included sandwiches, pannini's and taco's.

The landlord, Stuart, has worked hard on this pub. So, if you want a wide choice of good beer, although a tad off the beaten track, the White Horse is really worth a visit.

The pub has come under new ownership and i've got to say it's about time someone has put a bit a cash into the place.

The has been completly refuribed including the toilets and have got to say the beer is fantastic now.

Still kept the sky sports, more real ales and a bigger choice of lager for those drinkers, have not tried the ale but the people that have, have said it's much better.

Def worth people going to check it out. oh and to mention you no longer stick to the bar

10/10 atm

What seem to be started as a "new" landlord, I now wonder what the hell has gone wrong !! Yes the pub is clean - but the beer, well it leaves alot to be desired. Don't conplain otherwise the only reply is "Well the cellar is cold" . I do not think the larger drinking landlord has too much clue as to keeping real ale.

This pub used to be my local and after revisiting Chelmsford I shall not be using this pub again - maybe unless the owners send the landlord on a course on how to keep and serve real ale.

PLEASE POST A NOTE IF THE PLACE IMPROVES BEFORE IT'S SOLD AS MANY NOSTALGIC MEMORIES ARE HELD FOR THIS PUB.
Rating for this pub is a 1 just in case its the only one left in Chelmsford

The White Horse has recently been taken over again but this time by someone who actually knows what he is doing. The pub is clean, friendly and now has no complaints with regards to the real ale and draught beers. A very enjoyable evening to be had by all. Highly recommended.

This has got to be the one of the worst run pubs i've been in.
I know it has a bad history of sales and manager, but the landlady clearly has alcohol and anger management issues particulay towards her husband and staff not only it happens in front of customers.

The pub smells like something has died in cellar, it's dirty, the toilets smells.
No wonder people go in there anymore.

Come when is the place going to get some decent management.
bob1234 - 26 May 2011 17:36
A really good pub. Great choice of ales and some nice original features, not least the bar billiards table just inside the front door.

Polypinmath's latest review of this pub is marred by the fact that the one bad beer he had - the Adnams Stout - was in fact horrible and lactic everywhere. Adnams have unfortunately made a right mess of this brew.
BD_Chelm - 19 Apr 2010 19:45

No I am not a dipsomaniac.- I just had to return

How could this pub have been awarded the Local Camra prize of most improved pub ?

A mini beer festival running to support National cask ale week. Applause.

Daleside Spring fever and Celt Bronze straight from the cask - both fine.OK over to the handpumps to hunt the bad egg. Mmm Lcanster Blonde - fine, Caledonian
3 Monkeys fine...............keep going I thought,........ Adnams stout - yuk.

So from temporary redemption, to more improvement needed still

The White Horse deserves praise for its efforts but please quality before quantity.

I am happy to let local pub celebrity columnist The Shermanator be the arbiter
and drink elsewhere.

Polypinmath - 31 Mar 2010 10:33

Hard to find GBG entry. And I find it hard to see how it made and entry into the bible of real ale lovers.

8 Handpumps with a Welsh bias, ie lots of Brains which is what the cellarman himself must lack. Quality, simply bad. I dread to think what a pint of "across the tops" would taste like.

Not a destination pub when there are others so much better so close.

I will report back in 12 months (or longer).

Good pub, Cam and Chris have really turned it round.
EssexBoy - 23 Feb 2010 11:42
Great pub with excellent real ale. Cam the landlady is marvellous aided and abetted by her partner, Chris.

This is now one of Chelmsford's premier real ale pubs. They have a selection of 8 ales which change on a regular basis !! They have recently been awarded "The most improved pub 2009" by CAMRA , which I think is well deserved. They also throw a mean Beerfest which was back in April [ another please ]. With darts , bar billiards , friendly service and great ambience I recommend this pub to anyone.
smokinfish65 - 6 Nov 2009 19:12
The Horse has recently been redecorated and my previous criticism of the standard of cleanliness is no longer valid.

Still has the bar billiards and darts and cricket on telly {although sadly, the quiz machine has disappeared :-(}. Still serves a good selection of guest ales. There is a slight question mark over beer quality, but on the odd occasion when I have been served a bad pint they do change them for you without fuss, which is good.

This is a really good little all round boozer. It's now my pub of choice for this area beating off stiff competition from the nearby Ship, Original Plough and Royal Steamer, and I am upping my rating to a 7/10.
Jay28 - 10 Mar 2009 13:15
Friendly place, good selection of ales, but they are a bit hit and miss and I have had the occasional bad pint in the Horse.

You do feel like you need a bath after you leave the place as it is pretty filthy, especially the toilets.
Jay28 - 26 Mar 2008 17:33
Welcome still friendly, some interesting real ales - but back to normal prices.
knottyathome - 24 Mar 2008 16:54
All pints and bottled beers currently 1.95!
knottyathome - 25 Aug 2007 16:37
I didn't see a large selection of real ales yesterday and both the Broadside and the Mild were badly drawn and flat as a pancake. Unlike Camra's 'full-pint' club I prefer the aesthetics of a head on my beer and some life in the flavour. It won't be on my list next time.

Testing...
trainman - 2 Jul 2007 10:07
Friendly welcome and decent real ales.
wobblybob - 4 Mar 2007 10:39
Decent enough town centre pub tucked away up a quiet sidestreet, covenient for the station. Long and narrow with the bar along the left hand side, half a dozen or so real ales in decent enough condition.
Rich66 - 21 Jan 2007 18:03
Back street local near railway station. Gets very busy. Huge selection of well kept real ales.
