AS A FINAL FAREWELL TO A POTENTIALLY GREAT VENUE please read on:-

If u missed it first time round (...back in March 2006)! here it is again...!! One of the best 'ratings' posted on this marvelous Bite site. I only wish "anon" had declared who they are, so that they could take all the praise....here it is:-

This is a proper pub as it's nice and smokey. Not keen on the food but then I do prefer food with a bit of class. My husband said the burgers were a bit dry and his sausage was a bit on the short side. My melons were jucy though. I would say that it is a bit pricy for what you get though.

So disappointed. Have been to this place plenty of times and it just seems to get worse... they need Gordon Ramsey - at present they are neither a bar nor a restaurant. Too much floor space given over to serving food but no customers. We ate after the distastrous refurb and I have to say I laughed my arse off at the earlier positive review of the fishcake. Mine was like an enormous potato football (topped with an uncooked egg). The cocktails are good and the guy behind the bar is friendly and polite. I want it to be better than this, it has the potential but every management decision seems to take it further down the wrong road. I want to be able to avoid the chavs (sorting room/william webb ellis/whatever), poseurs (bear), fighters (george) and emo-rock kids (filthys - thank god that moved down the road!), so smo's should be my place....come on, sort it out.

Was too expensive and always empty so they did a "refit" which seemed to involve moving the bar.

Now it is empty and too expensive - Why bother? This road is a bit of a restaurant graveyard and this place is going to be signing in soon..

Went last night for dinner. We were the only people in the whole place and the food and wine were distinctly ordinary considering the fairly high prices. I would not be surpised (or sad) to see this place shut down, there are so many good restaurants in Twickenham that a mediocre and overpriced one just will not survive for long.

Surpringsingly it's pretty stylish. those boys behind the bar are almost as tasty as the drinks they make..yum x

Wow What a difference, this place now has the look of a west end bar and the drinks list to go with. my wife and i had the most increadible looking passion fruit cocktail made by the new manager, best drink i've tasted in a while we then ate in the new restaurant area downstairs and sampled the new seafood menu. I had the scallops followed by the mussels faultless and my wife went for the prawns and the best fish cake. we finished on the recomendation of the afore mentioned manager with the dessert cocktails which were a work of art. I've seen the bad reviews from before but give this place another try we certainly will.

I love this place - wooden floors, biggest bar in the world and a cocktail list to die for.
Staff are always attentive and helpful and their menu has a little bit of everything which is hard to find these days.

Sadly, the last 5 remarks here are all bad! Does that say something about this bar..?
I think they celebrated their first anniversary of opening recently, with 1980 menu prices (or something like that), but you couldn't get a table then. Things seem to have changed a bit since then.
(Please check out 'anons' comments on 21/5/06... one of the funniest double-entendre's I've seen on this splendid website..!!) TJ

"Closed for refurbishment" which is quite comical as the place was new and didn't need refurbing.

What it should say is "Closed due to charging 20 for steak driving away all customers"

Yes, Mr Eddie, we do. Visit the Eel Pie and The Fox, but don't bother with the rest, you're so right

Unfortunately this place is a prime example of the souless dumps that have sprung up in Twickenham. Its ok if your 14 and want to get hammered as quickly as
poss. But if you enjoy going to a real pub for a decent pint get to the eel pie or the fox. This comment could be applied to the other half a dozen dumps in the area, lloyds No1, Hook, line and Sinker etc. If you've been here you'll know what I mean.

Overpriced and not very good.

The food was mediocre and the ambience is lacking.

I hope never to go there again

you need an atmosphere to pull of this sort of venuw, sadly, Smollenskys has none! Over-bearing music and people who think they are 'flash' but are actually the same clientele from The Sorting Room.

pants.

I can forgive most things if there's juicy melons on thew menu :)

Fantastic burgers. Good choice of food on the menu. Draught selection limited but then it's not really that kind of place. Cocktails look nice tho. Very smokey I noticed, we ate upstairs and were the only ones up there yet still it was all faggy. Service was very good yet since there was no-one else upstairs it's difficult to say whether this is normal but I'll assume it is :)

A nice place for pre-dinner cocktails. Laid back, New York style. Upstairs, the food is great, but a little overpriced for a chain restaurant in Twickenham.

This always used to be a restaurant, but has now been changed into a new bar/restaurant type of arrangement. The downstairs bar serves their own brand of weak fosters-esque lager at high prices.

The food is good, although expensive for what it is. Not a patch on the old place on this site (El Torito)
