Made a day trip to Edinburgh from Cheshire, 3 hour train journey, well worth it. Deacon Brodie's was full but atmospheric. Excellent surroundings, I see from other reviews that it has been restored, but it has been very well done in a traditional style. No trouble getting served by the friendly staff (a characteristic of all the 6 pubs we visited in Edinburgh that day) had an excellent pint of Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted. Recommended.

great pub with history like many on or near the royal mile. Good Scottish ale along with a few guests as per most nicholsons.

8 of us went in here last Friday for a drink before proceeding up the Royal Mile to see if we could get into the Camera Obscura. Although it was packed in here the service was quick and the staff were cheerful and friendly and we got served very fast even though there was a stag and hen party in. Two of the ladies with us wanted coffe and that came fast as well. I recommend this place to anyone who likes a little bit of history attached to a pub.

This is one of the Royal Mile's most famed pubs - see the history notes on the tables. It is now run by Nicholsons who are mainly a London pub company but they have 6 bars in Edinburgh now. Grand interior which has been well restored. Good range of beers although most were from breweries from South of the Border. They do food with a restaurant upstairs although you can get a snack meal in the main bar. Service was very efficient and prompt even though the pub gets very packed - mainly with tourists. Try also The Mitre further down the Mile (another Nicholsons pub).

It sometimes can be tricky to steer oneself away from the main drag of the Royal Mile; all roads seem to lead to it. Doing so brings many rewards, not least in pub terms. However if you are stuck in the melee of the Mile and need a decent pint, you could do worse than come here. A large, lavishly-decorated Victorian interior, which is reminiscent of numerous pubs in London - and that's because this is the Edinburgh branch of the Nicholsons chain. All the expected features of their pubs are here - decent spread of ales (had some Stout which was excellent), and solid pub grub served in a dining room upstairs. As others have indicated, Brodie's isn't cheap and its touristy location must mean they're raking in the readies. All the same, if you can justify it, you'll enjoy a worthwhile feed and water against a pleasant, affable and bustling atmosphere. Not Edinburgh's most authentic of pubs but preferable to some of those nearby who could and should try far harder.

Good selection of ales but very expensive. No surprise as on Royal Mile, but there are other Pubs just as good or better and cheaper a short walk away such as Tass and the Bow Bar

Returned to Edinburgh and took a group of friends for lunch in October 2009. After a lengthy wait, which is to be expected, we enjoyed a very nice meal. The young staff were friendly and reasonably attentive. The only thing that marred the experience was the surly barmaid. When I asked the waitress for the bill, the barmaid snapped at me that she was busy and I would just have to wait. Apart from the fact that I had actually been talking to the waitress, if it is the barmaids responsibility to issue bills, then a simple "Be with you in a minute" would be acceptable

This pub is on the Robert Burns Ale Trail and is right on the Royal Mile so as you expect its full of tourists. It also has a kilted greeter to welcome you in. I guess it serves a commercial purpose but, for the reasons stated above, its not one of my favourite pubs.

Excellent food served upstairs with nice views out the window of the Royal Bank of Scotland. It does get very busy on rugby weekends but then, so does everywhere else in Edinburgh. The beer was perfect and the staff were friendly and efficient. Given its location in the heart of the Royal Mile, it does get lots of tourists but then - if you're not a local what are you? Yes - Tourist.

Had a good time in here on a recent day trip to Edinburgh. Staff was friendly and the place was filled with locals and tourists. Nice decor inside and convenient to the station and the castle. I will be back-

Spent many a new year in here totally creased! Always very busy with tourists and the posh rugby kids when i pop in for a pint. Defo one of the bars i always visit when in Edinburgh.

Decent bar that's usually full of tourist (and stag and hen parties of course).
Well worth a visit if stotting around the Royal Mile.
