We feel for the people running this lovely pub, as the road closure continues far longer than planned. Well worth following the diversion. We had a superb late lunch, cooked to order with special requests of variation from the menu. Delightful waitress.
Looking forward to returning

Nice pub and reasonable restaurant too. I stop in from time to time for a quiet drink or two; Clive and Debbie are really nice people, as are the regulars. Situated on the outskirts of town means that it never gets full of idiots too.

Well run pub. Usually a good choice of real ales and good food. Nice log fire in winter and pleasant large garden in summer. Staff generally friendly and helpful.

Four of us had a main course and pudding plus two or three drinks here on Friday lunch time and it all came to £78. The menu had a good choice and not too pricey and we found the food very enjoyable. The bread and buttere pud was a great hit. I had two pints of Ringwood fortyniner 4.9% a fresh and not too bitter ale. Friendly atmosphere in the bar where we ate and very affable bar staff.
A good experience-and well worth a visit.

One of the better pubs in Alton and after the departure of Helen and Nigel a few years back has regained a lot of its trade it lost following them leaving.
Food a bit pricey but good standard and plenty of choice of beers to suit most tastes.
Bar staff friendly and helpful but if only same could be said of the landlady.
Stern, morose and unsmiling countenance is very offputting and gives the impression she would sooner be elsewhere.
Cheer up ducks it may never happen or maybe it has!

Historic pub on the outskirts of Alton. Nice surroundings and have a coal fire during the winter. Food served throughout the day and the interior whilst modern does have a traditional feel to it. Visited there on a Sunday evening and surprisingly found it quite busy which is always a good sign. There were 6 ales from which to choose from so I decided to opt for the Alton Pride (3.10) that was nicely kept. They have previously been listed in the Good Beer Guide.

8/10.

Recently went to the French Horn as a Hampshire tourist - noted as a good pub near Jane Austen's house in Chawton. The food was ok - your usual pub fare. Service was poor. Sat down at 13.30. Order main course at 14.00. Complained at 14.30. Food turned up at 14.45. It wasn't even very busy. If you are visiting Jane Austen's house and looking for a lunch venue, there is a lovely tea shop and pub the Greyfriars directly opposite the house. Both are much closer, prettier with friendly prompt staff. Unless you need to be in Alton and just looking for a very average pub with poor service I'd give the French Horn a miss.

An excellent pub - friendly, quick service, great beer and a lovely garden.

They stop serving lunch at 230pm prompt except on Sundays. Was in on aSaturday recently and disappointed to find no food at 245pm ... weekdays I can understand it but Saturday? Looks nice but not particularly welcoming ... maybe it's because we weren't local.

Great pub, with lovely food sit outside in the summer or in by the fire in the winter, this is probably one of the best pubs in Alton and whilst i don't get to Alton often when i do this place is a definite must for a visit.

this pub is an old Alton favourite and it is really good to see the new management making such a good go of it. Excellent selection of Ales, taps go on for about a meter and a half along the bar. Get in early to grab a place by the fire rather than have to get shoved round into the restauranty area.

Ringwood Best, Butcombe Bitter, Pride, courage, Spitfire, Broadside. Large Inglenook at each end of long bar, handful of lunching customers in bar around 13:00 & seems geared toward food with large dining area set up in room to left of bar; on arrival Id also passed an outbuilding which looked a likely venue for private functions (50-60pax). Mains 10-12, burgers/ribs 8/9, filled cobs 5.50(!), steaks from 15 (never understand the disproportionate stk mark-up), all this bizarrely countered by Burts hand fried chips at just 70p. Some of the diners sounded rather hoorah but, despite this, the bar is long enough to accommodate drinkers & the huge grassy beer garden with plenty of picnic sets must be a big pull in good weather, a smaller garden area at the front looks out over the green. The stunning french/danish barmaid deserves a mention.

This is one crackin' pub..! My occasional visits over the years have always been pleasurable. Tonite the selection was Ringwood Best, Butcombe, Pride, Bombadier, Courage Best and summink else that had a logo like the 'Watership Down' rabbit..! My mate and I both had the Ringwood which was superb. The landlady spotted 'new' faces and was keen to ensure that we were properly looked after. I like that.. a really good operator..! The place was packed.. I'm not surprized..!

I still have the match box collection I purchased from the landlord 30 yrs ago.
Do any of you remember them being displayed here.

Butcombe, Sharpes Doom Bar & Adnams Broadside. The pub is divided in two, with a welcoming locals bar at the entrance and a larger restaurant area off to the left. Food is freshly cooked and of very good quality.

Anywhere the serves Doombar is good with me. I just hope they get Eden on as well.
Much better than it used to be a pleasant suprise on a recent visit having heard pretty average reports previously...

Can't vouch for the food as we only had a drink, but pleasantly surprised by this pub. A good selection of ales, including Butcombe, and a nice beer garden with a play area (all be it small) for the kids. This pub makes a refreshing change from the poor quality of Inns in Alton. We will definitely try a meal here at some point.

Food is good but not the service. Got our order wrong but no apologies. Told at 9.15 that we could no longer get desserts and no offer of coffee. The pub is under new management and the new landlords could do with some customer service training. That is putting it mildly.

A nice pub with a couple of interesting choices among the general standard range of ales, including Greene King Mild. A large outdoors, and friendly (and cute) barstaff.

Nice pub, good place to go if you want to avoid the rather crap centre of alton, sat outside on most of my visits, nice atmosphere, as said before the gardens are great and really invite you in for a relaxed drink.

Very nice pub, excellent range of ales allwell kept. Friendly landlors, and extremely nice gardens outside perfect for a sunny day.
