Not the smartest pub and could do with a makeover, but this is compensated by the warm and friendly atmosphere. Food is surprisingly good and seems to be genuinely home cooked. Service varies a bit by staff member, but the landlord is very friendly.

Recently went to the French Horn as a Hampshire tourist - noted as a good pub near Jane Austen's house in Chawton. The food was ok - your usual pub fare. Service was poor. Sat down at 13.30. Order main course at 14.00. Complained at 14.30. Food turned up at 14.45. It wasn't even very busy. If you are visiting Jane Austen's house and looking for a lunch venue, there is a lovely tea shop and pub the Greyfriars directly opposite the house. Both are much closer, prettier with friendly prompt staff. Unless you need to be in Alton and just looking for a very average pub with poor service I'd give the French Horn a miss.

The Rose and Crown, Selling
A great pub - lovely kentish inn. Food is pretty average bar the steak and ale puddings which are magnificent - as long as you are starving. However, owners and setting make up for this as a slice of rural idyll. You can also walk off the pudding with some beautiful walks on the north downs afterwards.
