Changes it's name to "The Far Canal" a few months back. Gone back to just being another tired old pub on a tired old street.

Don't give me that Heavy Fandango, your secret's safe with me lol!!!
I wouldn't know a Spoons drinker if I saw one.
Have to disagree to an extent on the previous review. Although never having eaten under it's current Jolies restaurant, when I've popped in for a drink the staff are now excellent and polite when I have experienced them recently and wouldn't think twice about a pint there unlike under the previous managers. Shocked at £10 for 3 pints??? Well that's Spoons drinkers for you...
Three of us went here on Saturday 12th. Two of us had Otter, and the other had some Spanish lager. We looked at the menu, as we had thought of having lunch, but on seeing the extortionate prices they expected us to pay we decided to go. It's pretentious, with untrained incompetent staff, and the two who had the Otter bitter are still suffering the aftereffects of it. (Not the price, but obviously some health hazard incurred by drinking it) £10 for three pints? A joke. Avoid at all costs.

I believe the managers of this pub are leaving in the next couple of weeks. Whether the current owners will continue with the pub or shut it down is anyone's guess IMHO at the mo. As cellerbuoy mentions, it's just an ordinary pub just about getting by/surviving.
Called in at this pub is on the Somerset CAMRA pub trail, although I cant imagine why. Its OK but unexceptional in every way, The beer was far from perfect and the service slap dash. Just an ordinary run down pub trying to survive and just about managing
That's a pity, as I had planned on trying the place this weekend.
Sadly, sadly, sadly the Canal has changed hands again. We had a very poor experience there a couple of weeks ago. (No offer of wine list, very limited menu, untrained staff who didn't know what they were doing and no sign of a manager when we mentioned our concerns.) The Slovakian lady already mentioned appears to have left - a shame as she was terrific.
Another one of those pubs where they go into the back room (cold cellar) to pour your pint rather than using the pump. This gives the opportunity for the staff to use up all the slops and think it wont be noticed. Probably get away with this practice with all the CAMRA folks who use it and who think this is authentic, but discerning drinkers are not fooled.

As per previous post, went (by bus) to the Curry night which was pretty good. Been again since - as usual the beers were good and the young lady (Slovakian) behind the bar was extremely enthusiastic and welcoming. Keep up the good work!
Called in early doors for a quick pint (I was driving!) Great pub, three different ales on draught and the Exmoor I had was A1. Friendly and chatty staff. Will go again soon - and will either go by bus or get 'er indoors to drive! Well worth the trip. The curry night on Tuesdays looks good!
Came here not expecting much as the pub had been dying a slow death prior to closure. Was surprised and impressed by what has happened since, 4 ales (Otter bright, Exmoor Ale, Moor Revival and Cottage Whippet) plus good food. Keep it up Canal! Needs passing trade to survive as village is a collection of 4 or 5 houses on A378.

Popped in for a drink Sunday lunchtime now that it's re-opened with new owners and have to say found it much improved and enjoyed my stay (compared to my previous visits/comments). Best of luck to the new owners, keep it going!!!

Beggarsbanquet is right! The pub has now re-opened after a major re-furb and we hope we can improve our rating here on the site. We have tried to create a warm and friendly local (with real open fire) where you can pop in for a pint or two with or without sampling our lovely food created by Vincent our chef. Please take a look for yourselves and we look forward to your comments! Open for lunch daily, Evening meals Monday-Saturday. 5pm opening Monday - Saturday, come and join us! Traditional Roasts on a Sunday but then we do close at 5pm for a night off! I am posting as the owner of the pub so hence the rating!

Re-opening on Tuesday 13th Oct is the current plan.
The pub must be a yoyo, as it did not appear to be open in June this year when we were in the area, but on passing it yesterday there appeared to be workmen inside refurbing, so may be a pub again soon. Board outside with phone numbers advertising for bar staff.
Fear not Yoyo, appears to be open again.
I'm sorry to hear this place is closed.
Decided to return to give it a 2nd chance but never got the chance as it's now closed. Not surprised from my previous comment and the 2 or 3 suspicious reviews here making it look worse.
Friendly roadside pub serving well kept ales when we called in during an overnight stop in August. Would like the council to clear up the folliage on the path needed to walk to this pub though as it is dangerous. Would like to call again and try the meals too when next in the area.
Lovely little pub, great pint of Thatchers Pear Cider... Stopped to kill 1/2 hour while waiting for a bus and stayed quite a bit longer! will return
I've checked back and this pub is worth a stop. It is a typical small country pub: simple menuy and choice of 3 ales and some farmhouse ciders in a friendly environment. Plenty of parking too.
Much improved. Will return
Went to this pub after a recomend. First class food & service.(good prices too) Landlord, Landlady & bar staff very friendly & realy make you feel welcome. I will definately be going back.I recomend this pub..
I have started going back in since the new owners have taken over and found them friendly and very down to earth don't understand a previous comment about the landlady and landlord. The landlord certainly knows how to serve a glass of wine as my mother has had the opportunity to sample and as for the landlady she is very friendly and welcomes people but also from what I could see does her fair share of the work. The barmaid certainly didn't look harrassed. So overall my kind of pub. friendly, fun and welcoming. Well kept ales, good food and wine.
I've been in here since the new owners arrived. The menu is simpler, but that's about the only change I noticed. I think pubs should keep food simple in the first place. New owners seem nice enough, but the beer selection seemd diminished. I'll check back to make sure.
The previous review from Siamesequeen looks a bit suspicious...!!! The afforementioned cook recently went and his replacement was good but not that good, well with my Sunday lunch anyhow. The 2 owners would rather leave the poor old over worked barmaid to it on a busy night and spend time yapping/hugging people. I knew I was in further trouble when the landlord had to get someone else to poor a glass of wine saying "I have no experience of this". I strongly don't recommend this pub!!!
I went to the canal inn recently and had a nice surprise to see it now has new owners who are very friendly. The menu has changed and the prices are very reasonable. The owners Sandra and Nigel have taken on a new chef and the food was wonderful, all food is bought local and fresh. The pub is now open 7 days a week. I strongly recommend this pub.
I have to mirror previous comments, this place is over-rated by the local camra-hoods. I've visited regularly and never had a great pint, only average at best.
Don't get me wrong, this is an OK but that's all it is; an OK pub. Like a couple of previous reviewers I can't see why this pub is winning awards. Maybe like cellarbuoy I'm missing something. Also fail to see where previous comments regarding staff/landlady being fnatastic/friendly etc come from as, fair enough if they were having a bad day, but they went from being helpful to almost down right rude at one point whilst serving.

Camra seem to have taken this pub under their wing and given it numerous awards. Can't see why. It seems that people think it is a good pub because CAMRA have said it is. Beers are ok, but the quality seems inconsistant, which debars it from any awards in my book
Camra seems to reward pubs with at least 4 real ales available and this pub fits that bill. It also had a toasty fire going and a charming landlady. Give it a try.
This pub is forever winning awards for this, that and the other. I can never figure out why. It's not that there's anything wrong with it: far from it, it's a very nice, pleasant pub, but it's never struck me as being anything more than that, and certainly not an award winner to my mind. Maybe I'm missing something.
Fantastic landlady who makes everyone feel like they've been coming here for years. Wide selection of beers and strange bottled lagers means there's something for everyone here. Ask about the Hula-hoop challenge and the Fish night (although probably wise not to do both at once!)
Friendly staff, low ceilings, tasty food and a nice country pub atmosphere. We had lunch there last week and were impressed. I will have to check it out some evening. Avoid the beer called "Ditchwater"
Its just won Somerset Camra pub of the year. Re opened kast year and is now a great little country pub. I had a meal there last night and its the best pub food i've had in years.
