Really good visit to this wonderfully sited pub. I'm guess the general and ordinary will get no farther than the Harbour pub but this is well worth the stroll round to the other side. If you like your real ale, superb fish and tremendous views this is the venue to head for. And it's seriously old too. Beers on were two from Rebel micro and Skinners pale ale.

Whereas the Harbour attracts the tourists, The Ship has a more local feel, but still welcomes all... The pub is quirky, bordering on the "needs a lick of paint" side, but pleasant enough. A beer matt collection on the roof and other interesting relics around. Good Beer selection - Sharps Doom bar and Coaster IPA, Skinners Porthleven Untameable Pale ale and The Rebel brewing Companys IPA (surfbum I think). Tiered beer garden with great views.

Decent pub, popped in here last saturday evening, busy and good stmosphere, attracts the locals but welcomes tourists too. Mixture of people eating and drinking, i didnt try the food but it looked and smelt good. has a great beer garden in the summer overlooking the harbour, inside it can be a little cramped and hard to find a table when busy, interesting place inside though, hundreds of different foreign and old coins stuck to the beams on the bar, and roof covered in beermats.
dont know what ales were on as I drink lager myself, Sharps cornish pilsner and Cobra are the highlights on the draught selection.

Interesting old building. Was busy with a mixture of locals and tourists when we visited. Beer by Skinners. Pleasant IPA with a surfer themed name (Cant remember tho.) Food was fine, but a little spoiled by the chap next to us who couldn't decide how hot his wife's fish pie should be..... The young waiter didn't help, by trying to tell him the cook was a professional, and if they ordered again they should specify that they wanted their food to be hot!

Great pub in a top location at the harbour entrance with good sea views from inside and out and a good atmosphere - seems to attract the fishermen and genuine locals but very welcoming. 3/4 ales on including our ale of choice - Porthleven - which is brewed for them by Skinners and is an easy drinking 4.8% IPA. We also had the best cheese board we've ever had and the food in general looked good and reasonably priced.

Looked forward to visiting this pub on my visit - but what a disappointment. Doom bar is better in my local 250 miles away, service both beer and food was disinterested at best and food was worst of the 3 pubs there. The pub is quite honestly skanky inside - which is fine if you are local and like it that way but visitors (and this is not a cheap destination to stay/drink or eat locally) expect a bit more and get it in many other tourist locations. this pub needs to spend some of its profits on the pub.

Having visited the Ship Inn on many occasions a few years back, we couldn't wait to go back and sample it again. Oh how we wish we hadn't though. It was nice to see when we got there that the pub hadn't changed, neither the menu. The bar itself is great, traditionally Cornish and cosy. However do get there in good light as if you're eating in certain areas you've got little chance of seeing it when it gets darker! The food itself was ok, but not as good as it used to be. The salad that we got was absolutely drenched in dressing, which in turn made everything else, including the bread, soggy. Not nice. The fishcakes were tasty, but the filling seemed to be liquidised to within an inch of it's life so no fishy chunks, despite this though, still had bones in! When we got there we were served at the bar by a friendly face. Unfortunately where we were sat, we had a view of the kitchen, and the umpteen young people working/hanging around there, shouting and singing. When fifteen minutes had passed after we'd finished eating and the plates were still on the table (no-one was doing any work at this point) we decided to pay and leave. Easier said than done though, as the person behind the bar was too busy playing cards to even look at us. It's a shame the visit was like this, as it used to be far better. Would never go back now, unfortunately.

Well, we must have got misled by the previous reviews as we made a beeline for this pub on arrival in Porthleven after walking the coast path. The welcome was OK and the landlord helpful in pointing us in the direction of where we could eat (they'd stopped serving lunch), but the place came across as rather dated and in dire need of modernisation, particularly the WCs. The one redeeming feature was the beer the Doom was superb and the Orchard cider just fine.

Not quite what it used to be as they only had Doom Bar and Courage Best but the food was still good when visiting lasdt week. Its worth going just to sit and have a pint in the fantastic surroundings though.

An absolute classic. If only all seaside pubs were like this! Stunning location with a great real pub atmosphere. Obviously heavy on the food, especially in the summer months, but that never detracts from this being first and foremost a pub.

Excellent. One of my favourite pubs anywhere. It is a quintessential Cornish pub, perched on the end of the harbour, overlooking the sea. On one of my recent visits, the waves were crashing onto the rocks, the rain hammering down and sea foam spraying the pub windows - sounds like a disaster film, but it only added to the place. Being stuck inside the authentic Ship and looking out on the howling weather only added to the visit. The fire was going, lowly lit laterns glowing and several pints of various Sharps ales made this a Cornish pub experience one to remember. I didn't want to leave and can't wait to return.

Revisited the Ship and sampled more of their excellent Doom Bar bitter. Good quality food, an atmospheric location and friendly staff all add to the appeal. If you're in the area a visit is a requirement!

Popular harbour inn. Busy lunch times, but so well organised that we didn't have to wait long for our spare ribs and chips. Washed down with a couple of pints of Sharp's Honey Spice. The ceiling is covered with beer mats and notes of foreign currency above the bar.

RogerB summed it up with his comments. Great location, great interior. Ale was good. Looking forward to another visit this November.

Great pub. Food is very good, if a little expensive. Beer is excellent, though a few more choices would be better. Setting and views are spot on - a pub with loads of character.

The Ship is probably the quintessential Cornish harbourside pub, commanding a prime spot over the picturesque, photogenic harbour entrance and a place in many a visitors heart. It delivers genuine warmth, especially on nights like when we called in when the harbour was shrouded in mist and the scene was like something from The Fog. Knocking sounds eminating from the barely visible boats, rigging rattling against the masts and the sound of the waves lapping at the harbour walls.all added to the spooky atmosphere. The Ship provided suitable escape from any marauding dead seamen with its intimate interior full of character. Old anchors, bits of rigging, exposed stone walls, bare floors with rugs, a crackling log fire and a homely dim glow from the lanterns that all adds to its charm. A mass of shiny coins are embedded in the bar frame and there are collections of old jugs, urns and a spectacular mass of beer mats cover much of the ceiling. The only thing that lets the place down is the minimal ale selection, just Doom Bar and Courage Best on my visit (at a very reasonable (2.40 & 2.25 respectively) although the other reviews suggest that there is some sort of rotation. The Ship is definitely a pub worth going out of the way for, whatever the weather.

Had a cheeky pint in here the other day... 'Sharps by Choice' on the outside of the pub... and why not?! Gotta love that Nadelik Christmas beer!!! A really warm atmosphere! Will be calling in again soon meyansomes!

Visited last month for the first time. An excellent old pub in a superb location serving top-notch beers. Just go there!
|
Great, great pub - good atmosphere, fascinating odds and sods around the walls/ceilings, friendly staff. Food far too expensive for us (little in the way of quick snacks) but lovely place and location. Highly recommended and very much a traditional, purists pub with great views from inside and from the garden.
|
This is a great pub. Just the right mix of location, layout, atmosphere and food. There is nothing better than sitting by the window with a pint of Doombar and a crab sandwich watching the waves crash over the harbour.
|
A Child hood favourite of mine, still so in adult hood! Looking forward to a repeat visit very soon. Superb food, scrumpy jack, ales and atmosphere!

Lovely old pub in a fantastic location. Great beer too. Hard to leave on a wet day!

16th century pub with a great atmosphere in a lovely location. Good food from an extensive menu.

An old, historic harbourside pub (dating back hundreds of years) serving excellent real ales ... and a SUPERB MENU! Just make sure you arrive early to secure a table!
