This pub has just gone through bit of a referb, mainly a deep clean and new toilets. As part of the update it has reverted to its old name The Burns Hotel but it is still a typical Sam Smiths and probably the best Smiths in York.

Great atmosphere tonight when we were in, really is an exception to the rule of most Sam Smiths pub's and a good mix of young and old.

First time I 've visited this place and enjoyed it. As said, it is a Sammy Smiths pub with an eclectic mix of tourist students and locals.
Worth a visit
Boisterous, plain speaking Sam Smiths pub, one of the cheapest beers in the centre, gearing itself to the unrefined York drinker, and none the worse for that. Obviously limited in ale choice, but a refreshing contrast to so many upmarket and slightly precious pubs that surround it. A good one to include in a crawl rather than a prolonged stay.

A pleasant Sam Smiths pub usual good quality beers on, and quiet posh inside and out. Staff very good and obliging. Locals down to earth and friendly, always ready for a yarn, some are a bit strange but all are ok. Always busy, popular with tourists who are on the York tourist trail. A true gem of a place. Used to be called The Burne in the 60s when it had a stage with live bands, a fight every friday and saturday was a must! How things change. Well worth a visit now!

Appreciate Sam Smiths pubs, you'll miss them when they're gone. In an age of corporate blandness, their individuality is a real treat! Excellent bitter at 1.60 a pint, and all human life thrown in as well. What more could you ask for!
Dead cheap Sam Smiths pub - always full no matter what the time - which says a lot about the clientele. Only wealthy / unemployed / alcoholics are in a position to drink thru weekday afternoons
Fantastic pub to sit in and read the paper while watching all the crazy old locals arguing with each other... Very cheap... Toilets were a bit manky!
Cheap 'n' cheery. Sam Smith's, you know what to expect. Pleasant staff.
Inexpensive beer (except for the Cherry Beer) and a selection of Al Murray-style armchairs. A proper city pub, popular with a mixed and intriguing crowd. Expect the occasional Hogarthian moments...
Plus points - it's a Sam Smiths pub, so it's cheap beer a go-go. Friendly and talkative staff, and comfortable seating. On the downside, it's always full of middle aged / old sooks who are often intent on causing bother with each other. While this is funny to an extent, it does get tedious.
But in my opinion, the positives far outweigh the negatives. A decent pub for a quiet pint, a full blown session, or a stop off between more or less any of the other areas of town, it's completely in the centre.

A find pub, the top sam smiths pub in York so be guaranteed cheap drinks and generally quite welcoming. Also located in a very good posistion, within a kilometre of many of yorks finest bars.
Locals boozer -Sam Smiths bitter ,spot on as normal....Got the inbuilt skylight at the back-through which you see (in a few northern Sammy smiths pubs)the leather jackets and the loud women on pints...
excellent pub good atmosphere a very wellcoming pub well worth a vist would definetly return ,
Friendly bar staff, extremely cheap good local beer. Lots of intimate and distinctive seating. Well worth a visit.

Well worth a visit - interesting
Very nice pub. Interesting & well kept interior. Can get pretty crowded, however. Still, though, great cask ale selection in the Olde Brewery Bitter. I found the regulars pretty friendly. Definitely worth a visit.
Lovely pub, lots of wood panels which are so well polished they gleam. Cheap beer of course being a Sam Smiths. Very central York. Brian and Trish the new owners doing great job. I will definitely return! Recommended!!!
Great pub and atmosphere, especially when colin starts to come out with his jokes and one liners.
Been using this place every Easter weekend for a few years now for the cheap Sam Smiths MILD. Gets busy at times with lots of folks passing through so always manage to get a seat. A good friendly atmosphere, met a few interesting characters in here. Moved on to the "Blue Bell" now for the Tetleys MILD the only cask MILD in York.
Decent pub. Great old-school leather chairs. Selection of normal horrific Sam Smiths liquor. Was good when they had D-Pills for its intoxifying effects. Great venue to pop into on an all day session to get out of the cold and take stock. Time-warp esq.
Was once famous for unspeakably vile Sam's, and close proximity to The Tiger, York's (then) top trouble pub averaging sveral plod visits every night on a weekend IIRC.
meet a romanian and a guy who could mimick famous singers. Very entertaining night out. Goes away from the trend of shiny metal and designer interiors and this is where its advantages lay.
Great in the afternoon, very gay friendly. Cheap beer and easy to pull, men or women.
Houses some very interesting characters in the afternoon. Cheap ale and cheap women !
A really pleasant, city centre (literally!) pub that has recently undergone a refurbishment. The interior is nice, traditional but not too "olde worlde", with high-backed leather chairs, little seating corners and a nice, slightly local, atmosphere. Is a Samuel Smith pub, so they serve all their beers, with Old Brewery Bitter on handpulled. A really great stop-off in town.
A great pub with a good atmosphere and good quality, cheap, local beers. If you're lucky enough you might get to sit in one of the hight backed leather arm-chairs. All-in-all a great place for a drink, the only problem might that it seams a bit bright in there sometimes, but that is nothing too serious to complain about.
