A decent, well run pub with a choice of Thwaites cask ales.

Regular customer for around 14 years now and seen many changes, new and permanent management after a lot of chopping and changing over the past few years.

Three constant and Three seasonal cask beers on at all times, plus a real cider and a fair range of fizzy stuff for those it interests. Thwaites house so beer choice is restricted but the seasonal beers change every 2 weeks or so and are always well kept.

Besides the beer, though it is all about the beer of course, food is served seven days a week and is all freshly prepared with no microwaves or 3663 trucks to be seen! Live music Friday and Sundays with a large back room, DJ on a Saturday. Back room can be partitioned and hired out in different portions for functions of any kind. Beer garden is second to none in Bury when the sun comes out and dogs always welcome.

Front "old" part of the pub if quite literally the oldest pub in bury and I suspect for some miles around, cask ales, malt whiskeys and a relaxed real pub feel. It is almost like two different pubs at times and should offer something for everyone.

Another Thwaites pub, tucked away opposite a church, but nextdoor to one of Bury's two Wetherspoon joints, the Two Tubs has a fair amount of character. All of the ales were from Thwaites. Some were their experimental beers. Wainwright, Original, 13 Guns, Lancaster Bomber, Columbus Brown & Yule Love It was the choice. The fact that a Christmas beer was on means the beers probably don't turn over that quickly. Cider was Old Rosie. Locals in the front bar were fairly friendly. There is a lot of seating in the rooms beyond, with another separate bar. Was offered a free half of the Original as they'd had to pour half a pint of each ale for their Cask Marque inspection.

If your in a hurry dont call in this pub , called in today , ordered meal , took forever to arrive , got a coolish cup of coffee after waiting and going back to ask for it ,the wrong order was brought ,for one person, the others had finished eating when correct order arrived , when the chicken came after a very long wait it was burned on the bottom . and was not good .non of the staff seemed in the least concerned ,we where only there for the day .will give that one a miss next time.yes we did buy drinks at the bar as well .

Well here I thought"A Thwaites pub.Probably only keg and certainly no mild".How wrong I was.Full range of Thwaites cask beers including Nutty Black mild. The food portions looked huge and it is a great old pub in one of the oldest buildings in Bury.

Oh, the Two Tubs - you bane of my life. When I'm there on a Friday night, I know I should have gone home!

But the atmosphere is good. You have to watch yourself here and there on a Friday night, and it can be a bit of a Meat Market at times, but it's a popular place; everyone converges there from Yates's, Pics, Knowsley, White Lion, Wyldes, etc, etc.

It reignited my love for modern music. I don't really listen to the charts - I get very surprised when I hear something I know on the radio, and I like it. It's the Two Tubs that does that.

But it still plays the Old School; DJs seem to know what songs work and what doesn't.

Fantastic! My favourite pub in Bury, I go here every time I'm in town. Plenty of space, really good atmosphere and interesting layout with different rooms. Last time I was in there an Irish folk band started playing at the back and we got two and a half hours of it for free, it was fantastic.

I like Warstarter.. it's nice to get a good pint of real German beer in Bury.
I have been going in on and off for 25 years and it was a pleasant surprise to find this decent pub is not only surviving but doing well. Only get to go over one Friday in 6, but it's always a pleasure to see a friendly face after 2 hours on the trams and trains.

Quality seems to have dropped since my last review

Bury's oldest pub but the modernisation has ruined the character. Beer quality is generally poor and tends to attract mature tramps during the week. At weekends, it's a different story as the late licence means it's one for the kids.

Historic old inn in a pleasant area of the town centre that has some distinguished buildings and is 100 yards away from the steam trains at the East Lancashire Railway station. It is a Thwaites house and sells their range, Lancaster Bomber was OK on my visit but not excellent. The interior is multi-roomed with low beams and the works and makes for a pleasant wander, but the open-plan area at the back looks like an extension to me. This is where the food is served and very good it is too- traditional hearty pub grub at excellent value. A few deadbeats in the daytime but easy enough to escape that due to the multi-roomed nature of the place. Worth a visit if in the town.

Pleasant enough place, but it seems to have no atmosphere when it's quiet.

Had a Nutty Black in this Thwaites pub. Enjoyed a wander round as it was quiet and I like multi roomed pubs. No atmosphere, but if it fills up should be better. Not sure why it is in Good Beer Guide when the excellent Trackside is not.

This place is nowhere near an 8.0 rating. Small cosy space at the front, large barn at the back. Thwaites house, so not great beer although they do the best they can with it. Always a strange atmosphere in here, can't put my finger on why. Fairly quiet even when the beer festival is on across the road.

Good beer and cosy pub. Will barstaff please learn how to serve a gin and tonic. They should not drown the gin by pouring the tonic into the glass.
terrylunn - 11 Mar 2008 16:40
Really good beer - Bomber. Nice cosy pub for a lunchtime drink. However, could the manager tell the staff not to pour the tonic into the glass, when a gin and tonic has been ordered, thus "drowning" the gin!

Great refuge when doing the market on a Saturday. I'm not a Thwaites fan, to be honest, but they do have a genuine German larger in Warsteiner. The food looks excellent and the staff are very friendly. Excellent multi-roomed boozer.

Very much improved pub over the last few months went in on a sunday night at 8pm and it was packed out with great music being on and the beer is even better now The Bomber was a great pint from the cask a very relaxing place tobe a Bury even a smoking area has been done out side

What a pleasant pub, visited today, fairly quiet, no idea what it's like in the evening. Bomber in good nick.

Nice pub used to be portraid as a bikers pub and for many years i avoided it for that reason, but its not like that. On the weekend you get 2 choices the "disco" side or the seating quiet side so you can have the best of both worlds
Also doesnt have any of them annoying under age kids in which helps keep the atmosphere friendly, been going in off and on for few years now and can honestly say this is one of the only pubs in bury ive never seen any trouble in well worth a pint in there if your from out of town.

A GREAT PLACE TO GO FOR A QUIET PINT,OR SOMEWHERE TO GO WITH A FEW FRIENDS,ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR THE SLIGHTLY OLDER GENERATION (MATURE 30+) GOT LOTS OF CHARACTER,AND FRIENDLY STAFF. FOODS GOOD-COULD BE IMPROVED SLIGHTLY,BUT OVER ALL QUITE TASTY AND REASONABLY PRICED. GOOD PLACE TO GO FOR VISITORS OF BURY WHO NEED A BREAK FROM THE EXCELLENT RANGE OF EXTENSIVE SHOPS AND THE WORLD FAMOUS MARKET HERE IN BURY.WELL WORTH A VISIT. THERES SLIGHT PARKING ON THE WYLDE (NEXT TO THE TWO TUBBS) OR OUTSIDE THE PUB ITSELF (OR IN BURY CASTLES CAR PARK ON A SUNDAY!)
REALLY GOOD PUB

Went in for the first time today (Dec 8th 04)
Looked like a decent, clean pub on the outside. So i thought i'd go in for some food. I had my 2mnt yr old son with me. The pub allows children in until 4pm. So i went in, and was greeted by an extremely friendly barmaid who advised me to go to the other end of the pub to eat, as that was a non smoking end (until 4pm)
The pub inside, reflex the outside. Clean and decent looking. To look at it from outside, it doesn't look as big as it actually is.It's surprisingly big. As its one of BURY'S OLDEST pubs (built in the 17 centuary) it contains lots of traditional character. Old wooden beams, log fires mixed with modern wood design. There are two bars. Each with really friendly and efficiant staff behind them. The food was above average, and the prices were average.(I had a tuna melt with chips and salad for 3.95) The drinks were of average price too. Definately will be going back.Attracts friendly and good clientel. A really warm and comfortable pub. Well worth a visit. Impressed with this one. Next to the Robert Peel (Weatherspoons) and The Wylde, also at the side of Bury Castle.

8.5 out 10
