Much more of an older feeling pub than the hope or the magnet. It's also reasonably spacious but the bar is in a cramped area next to the door. We went for a pint of Muirhead Elvis (or King of Hops, something like that) and it was pretty decent and well kept and cost 3.10. The pub has about 3 or 4 different seating areas and is a very intimate drinking pub which is worth a try if around Stockport.
Great traditional pub and a great start to our Stockport crawl. Plenty of choice of ales at the bar, with stout, porter and pales to choose from. We went for the North Star Porter which was very pleasant and slipped down nicely. We managed to get a seat in what I assume would have been the snug in years gone by.
Behind the bar there appeared to be a musician doing his thing with a guitar - not sure if this was planned entertainment or impromptu, but looked very relaxed and certainly added to the atmosphere.
Not my round but I don't recall it being particularly expensive. Would definitely recommend.

I have loved this pub for the last 14 years since I started going in when I used to work in Bredbury. I live in Bolton and visit now every time I go to Stockport, which isn't as often as I'd like. The staff are really friendly, the beer is first class, and if you're lucky, you can even catch some ukulele playing on a Saturday afternoon once a month, some folk on a Sunday and some other live music. A pub that really knows what it's doing and is good at it. My favourite place to be.
If Carlsberg did proper pubs and didnt brew crap lager ...........
Great pub, great ale, great, great, great.
Just seen a TripAdvisor review saying the place was slowly going downhill. Just found the person with the bolt in their head Martinsh
Stockport’s most famous pub, and justly so. Just before I arrived I received a text from a friend saying how wonderful it had been when he went 36 years ago ! Then it was a Boddingtons pub, but now it is a free house with 16 beers on tap.
These are immediately on your right as you enter the pub and, handily, are arranged by type. [ i.e. all bitters together, all dark beers together etc ] I started off with the Stockport brewery Stock Porter, which was OK but didn’t really grab my attention. I followed this with the Kingstone Premium Stout which was much mire to my liking.
You can choose to sit in front of the bar, and there is another (small) room to the left, but I chose to sit in the back room. A bit dingy, but wonderfully atmospheric. Walls covered in all sorts of prints and old posters and photographs. Perhaps my favourite was one showing old brewery trucks, including one that was basically an enormous bottle !
Oh, I somehow seem to have forgotten to mention the viaduct outside – it’s enormous !
9/10 – if you don’t like this place, you must have a steel bolt through your head !
This is a cracking pub with 13 hand pulls along a small bar with 2 T bars for the other stuff. 2 were not in use but the other 11 were all for ale listed on a board above the bar. What a great choice they even had something called Briggs Light @ 2.7% for the lighweights of this world like MillHouse. I had a very nice pint of Magic Rock Ringmaster for £2.70 served by a very nice young lady. I was just about to leave when I noticed it was tipping down outside. O dear I will have to stay and have another pint.
A decent traditional pub with 12 casks. Worth the walk from Stockport station.

I moved out of the area several years ago, and this pub is the main reason I return to Stockport so frequently. In my experience, one of the very best pubs anywhere.
A fantastic proper pub. Had visited years ago but made much greater impression today. Incredibly friendly , lovely multiromm pub with impressive beer range. Not the best beer in Stockport but the best pub.
I will miss this lovely pub and its friendly locals, I came to work in Stockport a year ago the job didn't work out but I have made some great friends in this pub. I will be back to visit but it will be only now and then. Thanks to all the regulars that made me so welcome and the staff especially the gorgeous Becky (wish I was 20 years younger). I am returning to my home town with great memories Thanks
Re comment below I think you have the wrong Crown, the landlord is a little untidy but dirty and scruffy not. I think this comment is either the wrong pub or yet another put on by an other pub trying to put this wonderful pub down. The landlord is not rude and encourages business he doesn't turn it away, the pub wouldn't be so popular if he was.
Having been recommended this pub for my sisters birthday party as they have a beer garden, we went to check it out. We didnt get asfar as the garden. It turns out we ran into the landlord. What a joke. the most DIRTY SCRUFFY SHREK like person we had met.It was hard to believe he was a landlord but We only found out his name after our encounter with him. trying to ask about our played party we were snapped at and told i dont have time for this talk to that person. Well with that we left the pub.His lose as we were planning aparty for around 80 people with live music etc. My advise for anyone looking for a nice place to hold an event or a night out is to stay away from such a RUDE person as that guy.
10/10 whenever I've been.
There are some suspect comments here. If you doubt mine check the rest of my postings.
Just a general comment regarding BITE. Why have they stopped the comments from being uploaded on the home page - even on the live stream?
Came in here after a dreadful experience in a nearby pub, what a great pub, beers where well kept good choice. We were going to move on but stayed it was too good to leave.
Always a pleasure to visit, excellent beer choice
Have just noticed (thanks for nudge) that I haven't reviewed this classic. Just shows how easy it is to take Stockport's pubs for granted. It was a welcoming, multi-roomed ale house with beers for all tastes when I last visited, but a return is overdue.
Came here on 24th March before the Stockport v Bath City game. This was the chosen pub for the real ale drinking Bath City supporters and we weren't disapponted. I had a stout and a scrumpy (didn't make a note of their names) at very reasonable prices. Impressive beer garden out the back too.
I live in Liverpool and the Crown is worth a slight diversion from Manchester next time I venture over there. (Only 10 minutes on the train from Piccadilly to Stockport and a 10 minute walk down the hill).
Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: Started the evenings Stockport beer tour at The Crown. Two dark beers were sampled - Abbeydale Dark Angel and Phoenix Monkey Town Mild, both were superb. A wide range of beers was on offer, with something for everyone. Class pub.
Excellent pub. Great atmosphere even when it's heaving at the weekend. Wide range of beers available all in top-notch condition. Had a few beers that weren't to my taste but I prefer that they try different styles over the same 'usual suspects'.
You hear alot andsome, have you heard of a little 3`6" guy called scamp he walks with a lisp and talks with a limp ?
Have you thought about venturing in and enquiring about her health?
I thought this was a site about beer, pubs, you know that kind of thing......
I have heard that the landlady is unwell, is this true?
Great pub
Terribly slow service on a Saturday evening, despite the pub not being particularly busy. 13 ales on. Doesn't seem to be as good as it once was..?
As can be seen from the picture, this pub sits in the shadow of the railway viaduct that spans the Mersey which is probably Stockport's main landmark, It is undoubtedly Stockport's main real ale pub with 12 on offer when I was there. I tried a very nice pint of Prospect Hopper. The area of the pub closer to the viaduct is pretty non descript but there are two snug type rooms away from that and a bit behind the bar that mkae it feel more pub-like.

Only been in about 3 times over the last 12 months since we finally found it but this is one of the best pubs Ive ever been in. I wish we lived nearer. Beer quality superb & wide choice, staff fine, lovely trad boozer inside and out in the multi-room style. Most of us know to ignore the idiots on this website, Ive not experienced the silly abusive banter below about any other pub. 9.5/10 for the Crown.
I was taken to the Crown on a wet Sunday whilst my beloved went top watch Take That at Eastlands.
IMHO as a foreigner in Manchester, the Crown is great.
About a dozen decent beers on, friendly staff, including the American bar maid and a helpful landlord who directed us to a couple of other pubs in the area.
We were in there at about 6pm on a Sunday and there was a bit of a folk music jam thing going off, not my thing, but they could all play and it sounded OK.
3 great pints later and a good conversation with a cider head who also directed us to another pub new to us and we staggered out to continue our little crawl.
Bourt tyime all the bitchey pub knockers packed it in and used this site for what it was originally intended, sourcing good pubs and beer by recommendation.
I had never been to crown before all your comments and am now a regular well at least 3 times a week you really are a prat bateman The Crown is a good old fashioned boozer great beers and no pretentions. Not been going in long but the regulars always let on and have a chat. Landlord and landlady are friendly without being in your face nice couple
The following reviewers ... or should I say reviewer (singular), as it's probably the same sad person with multiple accounts, has never commented on any other pubs apart from The Crown Inn, 154 Heaton Lane, Stockport:
NiceOnlt, leBoozer, boozysam, friendlyman, COUNTY.fan, fallowfield, passthesalt, gooddrinker, happytodrink, thepubb, wendywolf, eveb, evec, salb, mrhandsome, brenda11, femalebeerdrinker, thegurninghaddock, gullox
We can now add tightarse to the ever growing list ... pathetic.
Yes I agree this pub is great it seems someone has a grudge reading some of these comments shame people are so petty
Rating 6.2??? Unbelievable. As previously stated I live on the other side of Manchester but consider this pub as one of the best I have ever been to. Traditional snugs, excellent beer garden (pity about the motorway traffic noise), fantastic range of dark and light ales and porters along with several ciders and above all friendly barstaff and customers.
No I haven`t heard from scamp but he is probably from a rival pub why would a customer of the crown spoil its good name it doesnt make sense
What is happening to berrintheevening they are wiping comments without reason but allowing obsene ones to remain. The Crown is a great pub and lots of good comment have gone including mine, what is happening BITE?
Simple reason is that people have different ideas of a good pub. I have been to the Crown a few times, and you cannot fault the building, the beer, the service etd. However, if you are looking for loud music and crap beer, you won't like it. Most people just ignore the marks and read the comments, if not you might find yourself in a pub that scores highly based on 'Fit barmaid and great Fosters', on the fit barmaids day off! So, if you like a great choice of well-kept, high-quality beers, with the range continually changing, the Crown is a great choice.
Loads of previous comments gone. how sad is it that people are dispondent and are unaware pubs like this earn good ratings. Also rating plumbeted from 7,5 to 6.2 how can that be ? (sent message two week ago still waiting explanation) Just left pub this evening after watching the presentation of the South manchester and Stockport pub of the month award.Which was well deserved. This site has lost all credibility with me.
Where has my previous comment gone? This is a great pub the beers are well kept there is always a good variety a great find for me
One of the finest pubs in the Greater Manchester area. The beer is uniformly excellent, and the choice is outstanding. In fact, there's so much choice it's like an all-year-round beer festival. The staff are friendly and frequently funny. The pub is wonderfully Victorian both inside and out and is a joy to sit in.
The only significant downside is the unfortunate placement of the M60 motorway right at the back of the pub, which makes sitting in the cobbled area/pub 'garden' outside a noisy and sometimes smelly affair. This is a shame as the outside area is pleasant otherwise, with lovely views of Stockport's famous viaduct.
The Crown is surely worth more than the 6.1 it's currently rated at. It sets the standard for beer in Stockport and most of the North West. This soft southern jessie gives it a 9.
I would second the thanks to The Cown for the Spitting Feathers trip, it will take some beating.
Just a note the say thank you to the Crown for organising a great day out! We had a great time on the Spitting Feathers brewery trip. It was very interesting to see where some of the beers that we like so much actually come from. It was a very enjoyable day with some very good Spitting Feathers beers, sausages and ribs!!! A trip to two pubs in Chester (reviews on their own sites) and then back to the Crown for a few more beers, the Pictish was lovely last night, thanks again.
you really are a bunch of wankers ,no jobs,no home(unless its a crack den)and no common sense,w1,live and die that dream you muppet.you worked in a factory all your life, and when you go home thats all you dream of,wanker.
Further more, due to adverse, contradicory or paradoxical beliefs of our Southern cousins, we up north can recognise this is a forum regarding beer and the associated outlets whether it will be a bar, boozer, taproom or watering hole.So please dont show your Southern apotheosis of how you portray the north and your stereo typical Southern beliefs on this site. Grow up and stop posting your derogatory remarks especially Guv/2
Guv2 ~ Aahh the south must be wonderful; Great shame then that the schools there don't teach you people how to use punctuation or even spell for that matter!
bye the way stoutfatfellow i didnt know that stockport had a tourist board, give up your day job (if you have one) and try and get a proper one.....as norman tebbit once said (get on your bike)and look for work,i for one am sick and tired of you northern lazy idiots claiming state money, for which us hard working southen ENGLISH PEOPLE pay taxes for.........
to woo,to whit.
new york, new york,so good they named it twice...yes the song does spring to mind...but buds posting..well,as we all know english lager is served chilled,so you can tell the difference between american lager (horse piss)...vacation next year in (northen land where everybody is on the dole, and lives on state handouts and in little council boxes that they call flats...yes all broke and deal in drugs....just like the bronx) well come down south too the rich part of england...and see how the real english people live..with proper houses, inside toilets,no ferrets, flying rats and where we talk proper english, where in fact your great grand perants came from. yours with a smile and a big LOL
Thank you for visiting HQ. Pleased to hear you enjoy our real beer. Spread the word.
My wife and I are from the USA. We were vacationing in stockport and visiting our ancestors who live in the area. We tried this pub on our first night and we had a great time. The British real ales are very refreshing and tasty (much better than our american beers). We liked it so much that we will be taking our vacation next year in Stockport. We think that the Crown is very quaint.
Well said Sir
You'll soon be old enough to go out and get a job.
I was visiting the stockport hat museum with my family we had a lovely day out. After the visit my wife and little sidney did a little shopping while I checked out this pub that I had heard so much about. It was wonderful. Such great beers. I had two pints. I would have had more but I had to drive back home to Milton Keynes. What a great place Stockport is. I wish I lived here.
This is the best pub in the Uk by a long chalk.
YOURE ALL A BUNCH OF NORTHERN CUNTS,FUCKING DIE YOU BASTARDS,,,WEST HAM FOREVER
Just got home after the best nights drinking ever. What a great pub. I think I will make this my local it is so good.
Was visiting friends in stockport and called in here. What a place!. I could not believe the vast amount of ales that were on show. Keep up the good work......
All this talk about the Crowns great beers. Well its all true. But I go in the Crown for the great cider. I think it was something called Broadoak the last time I went in.
As a mild drinker I find the Crown usually has a decent mild on tap as well as the other delicious beers both local and national. What a great pub.
Well said Fallowfield, the bloke is a very , very sad person who is easily confused probably doesnt know is arse from is elbow
Why wont you admit you made a false comment prat bateman
Add gullox to the list.
I wish that people who have never frequented the Crown would stop making comments. The people of beerintheevening obviously think this pub is good otherwise why would it recieve such a high ranking. So shut your mouths and drink the excellent beer.
Prat bateman I am not a multiply account holder and you are a liar the Crown does not have food in the evening as you said and have not got rude staff. Get a life. I you are going to review a pub be accurate or don`t bother.
The following reviewers ... or should I say reviewer (singular), as it's probably the same sad person with multiple accounts, has never commented on any other pubs apart from The Crown Inn, 154 Heaton Lane, Stockport:

The list is never ending.
This is possibly a good pub ,what does it no favours are the `one` (sometimes two but that doesn`t fool anyone) hit wonders. If a pub is that good it will stand or fall on it`s own merit. Old saying self praise is no praise. And as for the best pub in the country that poster is deff. barking. No rating given at this time.
Best pub in Stockport.
My wife and myself have only lived in the area for a short period of time and have been looking for somewhere pleasant and clean to enjoy our evenings. Can you imagine our delight when we found the Crown. The attractive barstaff told us it had won many awards for its splendid ales. It is definately a cut above the rest.
well said scoobybobs. I was in Crown last nioght and the 2 barmen are really nice lads and very good at there job. I have never known either to be rude and yes no food in the evening and no crispy pancakes on lunch menu. I eat there some lunch times and food is basic plain food they don`t pretend to anything else. This is a good old fashioned boozer
I have been coming to this pub for years and have always considered it to be the best in the country. It has a wonderful variety of beers and is very clean.
Always an absolute pleasure visiting the Crown: Large ever-changing selection of ales & delicious ciders, great atmosphere, friendly locals and, contrary to Pat Bateman's review, welcoming staff,. The comment, "If thee dont'eth like thine beer, yee can booger off backt' tat that Loondon town " confuses me, as the Crown Inn is in modern day Stockport, not 1800's Yorkshire.
As for the food comment, dare i say you're talking out of your arse, as it isn't served in the evening. Methinks maybe you are slightly confused....
Right, this is not a good way to rate a pub in my opinion. This is more like a slanging chat site. If the people on here were true beer/ale drinkers there wouldn't be all this fighting going on.
I did set foot in this pub through true curiosity as to what the locals were like after reading this and you know what? You're not all that .As for the beer/ale, average.
Visited this place last night after reading all the great reviews.
Wish I hadn't bothered. My beer was flat and tasted like vinegar. When I complained to the barman, he barked:
"If thee dont'eth like thine beer, yee can booger off backt' tat that Loondon town "
I was taken a back for sure, but was determined not to let the neanderthal get the better of me.
I quickly switched to what I'm guessing and hoping was cider, before settling down to crunch my way through his finest microwaved Findus (overly) Crispy Pancake avec Fries de Curl.
Won't be rushing back.
We were passing through the area on our way to Blackpool and thought we would have a bite to eat. I had the Minute steak and chips while my wife had Cheese and Onion pasty chips and beans. the food was superb (probably the best we have ever had) but what made thie Crown worth visiting was its fine selection of real ales. It was in a great location next to the railway viaduct constructed in 1843. Everyone was very friendly we will definately visit this place again. Why not give it a try.
Ha ha no not worried pub is not in Fallowfield which is in Manchester and where I live. Pub is in Stockport hope you get the right Crown
makes you worried??? a true review of the pub??? without false postings??? hmmmm.....guv1 no rating (at the moment)
Hey guv1 don`t want you in Fallowfield
dont it just make you laugh.
its his 85th birthday party im going to.
well pat,i think they are all true.....attractive wife..uncle jo,great cask beers and relaxing and ambient atmosphere...i cant wait to visit when we go to fallowfield in two weeks time ........keep watching for a true review..yours guv1.no rating given(at the moment)
The last 4 reviews again are all from a multiple account loser.
What a sad little person you must be.
My husband and I were visiting relatives in stockport. Uncle Joseph said we should come here if we wanted a decent clean place to enjoy our evening. So we did. We were not disappointed. It was such a relaxing and ambient atmosphere. We will definately visit the crown next time we are in Stockport.
I am a regular at this pub I come here at least twice a week. The reason?. Because its the best pub in the country. Other pubs in stockport like the magnet and the railway are very poor in comparison. Do yourself a favour. Next time you are in stockport head straight for the Crown.
Came here the other night with my wife (who is really attractive by the way). She had a glass of rose whilst I enjoyed some of the great cask beers that were on show. I would recommend this place to anyone who is refined enough to enjoy a great pub and great atmosphere.
Great pub with a fantastic range of real ales.
What prompted all this?
Calm down its only a commercial! lol
Firstly I would like to appologise to Mr Bateman for my previous comments. I was too quick to jump to the defence of the Crown ( a pub I have frequented fo the past 10 years). I have read through the so called reviews and they all look to me to be written by the same person. There have been disgraceful comments about the landlady of the Railway and as a result I will never set foot in the Crown again. As I said before I have used this pub for the last 10 years. You probably know me as Harry (one of the crowd from stagecoach who come in on a friday evening).
I too am very unhappy that Mr Bateman feels that my posting is suspicous by virtue of it being one of the 'last ten' comments posted. I have given my opinion which is valid and sincere. I do not comment on the Railway as I do not frequent that pub, I do not comment on the Magnet as I have no need to go there, the Crown sells as many delightful, interesting beers as I could wish for! I enjoy the warm atmosphere, the different beers on offer, the banter with the staff and in the Summer sitting in the beer garden is fabulous, with a tasty beer in a unique setting! If Mr Bateman with his belligerent attitude chooses not to visit - well all the better for the customers at the Crown.
blatant self promotion
I object to being accused of a false posting I am new to bite hence the new posting mor4e will be going on. Do you have a problem with such a good pub? I can`t think why. Try the pub yourself ands see how good it is
no not at all, just somebody that dosent like false posting,i mean lets be fair the site is about people who enjoy good pubs and good ale,why should anybody go too a pub and then find that when they get get there they have found everything they have read on this site is false, that is not on,lets keep managers, staff and friends from using this site to promote there personal interests, let the pub stand alone and be judged for what it is.pubs have for the last few years have had enough problems just keeping there doors open, those that cant step up too the mark need too up there game, they cannot rely on fase postings to try and gain footfall, sorry bit of a rant......no rating given
pats ok,and very good at sniffing out false postings....no rating given.dont know the pub,and would not go in there anyway after the false postings...
I am a local at this pub. It is by far the best pub in stockport. Dont listen to this Bateman idiot he obviously has some sort of agenda.
eveb, evec ... how many more accounts do you have?
What a clown.
I was in Stockport on business when I found this pub. The service was first rate. I liked the pub so much that I brought some of my business collegues here the following evening. We all enjoyed ourselves very much. It is of no surprise that the people of this website consider this pub to be the No1 pub in the country. I dont usually like real ales but I made an exception here and Im glad I did. I would thoughroughly recommend this pub to anyone who is visiting Stockport. I had a great time and so will you.
BEWARE!!!!!
The last 10 or so glowing reviews of this pub are all highly suspicious.
Every single one of them has only ever commented on this pub, or The Railway ... even then that was only to slag The Railway off.
Wish BITE could do something about multiple accounts ... although I suppose it's almost impossible to control.
Some poor sod could waste their time treating this as a destination pub.
My boyfriend took me to this pub last night we had a great time everyone was so friendly and the wine and beers were the best weve ever had. I recommend the crown to anyone looking for a decent pub with great beers.
I have just discovered this wonderful pub. I came here with my boyfriend the other night. he had a real ale and I had a glass of red wine which was superb. I think that I will make this pub my local because everyone is so friendly.
I am new to this area and was recommended this pub by a work mate and I am glad he did, best pub around. I love the live music on a Sunday afternoon
I like this pub, great beers and lovely lively atmosphere. Very busy last night but staff were great. The real fire in the room behind the bar is very welcoming on a cold afternoon and sometimes there is a very handsome dog lay in front of the fire.. Great place
Great night again in the Crown, a real ale pub for us girls as well as the men. We had a fabulous evening, lots of choice of very tasty beers, especially the 'Chocwork Orange' a dark, rich, tasty beer that was 6.5%, also the Marble Ginger was very palatable. Always has a warm atmosphere and friendly staff, if you've not been - WHY NOT??????
This is my very favourite pub and I would recommend for all you discerning beer lovers, the beers are varied and interesting and there is always something new. Love it!
My boyfriends favourite pub and I must agree it is a good one very friendly and welcoming. We ate for the first time lasty week and had a really good double cheeseburger for around 4 great value and very tasty. I am not normally a beer drinker but was peruaded to try a bitter called white nancy which I was told was brewed in Bollington near where I live and it was really good, am I now a convedrt to real ale? maybe if the rest are as good. Wish I lived nearer.
Sorry re below meant pub dog. I have been reading other comments below and I might have to come and see the Saturday lunch barman and the chicken mentioned.
Love this pub although it appears to be a "mans" pub it is a great place for us ladies too. The wines are well chosen not a stowells or blossom hill in sight. I love the open fire and the cute little pub doh
That will be me!
Love this pub it just gets better. Who is the attractive barman that works Saturday afternoon?
Called in on Friday absolutely packed but no problem being served. Usuall array of fine ales and porters. Excellent atmosphere and friendly staff. Can not praise this pub more highly.Particularly noticed when one beer had gone it was immediately replaced, well done.Still # 1
please check the past reviews from the guilty one several reviews posted on the same day and guess what , a review was submitted about two crowns. clearly a case of mistaken identity if ever there was one. i agree with realale rules this a unique pub very friendly and excellent ales. my number one by far.
Here Here shorty1, Even though I live on the wrong side of Manchester I still regard this pub as my number one favourite! The range of ales and porters as well as ciders is quite outstanding! Always a warm and friendly welcome even to myself (Not a regular).
I don`t know what theguilty one is on about as this pub opens at 12 every day and all the staff are great especially the gorgeous barmaid that works lunch times, think you have the wrong Crown mate
A fantastic pub with an excellent choice of beers and ciders, a warm and friendly welcome is always given. A proper pub with characters aplenty!
Let's be positive. Really good choice of real ales. You really couldn't ask for more choice outside of a beer festival. The interior is interesting and unspoilt. One criticism. One day I presented myself at 12-15 pm only to be told to f*** off. Well, not literally, the actual words were 'We're not open yet' but in a f*** off tone which I did not appreciate. Apparently one is supposed to know the hours it deigns to open.
My second visit here and it does not dissapoint. Great food.great beer, great pub. Fully deserves all the awards it gets.
Wow. Stopped off between trains and stayed quite a while. 13 ales on and between us we had 10 and all were spot on. has to be in my top ten for the UK. Although suitably low key they do food as well. Now looking for an excuse to go again....it's a long way for a Southerner.
Cosy boozer with wide range of real ales all seemingly in top nick. Don`t be put off by the slightly bizarre location underneath the viaduct.
I love this pub, so friendly and great great beers. They do seem to have a very strange pet though, I have seen many a pub dog but never a pub chicken before! ha ha brilliant
Was in here last night. Good friendly banter from the locals. Really prety young girl serving behind the bar. As per usual a cracking range of ales and porters on offer. Above all one of my favourite pubs if not my NUMBER 1!!
The beer garden is a pleasure to drink in (weather permitting), the colourful plants make a great background. As for the beers, well they just get better!
This is a real ale connoisseurs pub. I always shied away from this pub with its very down to earth exterior, some friends dragged me in and I have been dragging other people in since. Superb range of beers from all over the country (highlight for me was Teignworthy from Devon and it was here I was intoduced to (imho) the best beer in the world "Jaipur" by Thornbridge). The staff are great and other customers are also really friendly. This is my favourite beer drinking pub in the North West.
Popped in here yesterday for an hour. Had an excellent stout and a mild from Phoenix priced at 2.50 and 2.30 respectively. Lovely!!
As a female real ale drinker this is a great place I feel very comfortable drinking in here, the landlady has similar taste in beers and has pointed out some fantastic beers for me to try. I wish there were more pubs like this around

Pub and barmaid gets better and better
Truly, this is God's own pub. Views of urban Britain at its most evocative, unheard-of levels of real ale excellence, classic rock on the jukebox...what more could a man want? the last time i went here they'd added a second bar to the total number of handpumps to what, 20? I had always felt limited by a trifling 14... ive never had a bad or even mediocre pint here. seriously, i may be getting carried away here but i honestly consider the crown to be my favourite pub of all time. i know, i know, but it really is that good, even the pork scratching are top-notch (though admittedly it's hard to go wrong with pig fat and salt). easily a 10, even on its worst day.
I am fast becomming a fan of Stockport especially this pub. It is teaming with character and charm. The old fashioned "snugs" are delightful. Its easy to talk to anyone in there. The wide range of real ale is like being a kid in a sweet shop!!
Cracking beer garden with spectacular views of the viaduct. Last time I visited I had a sandwich and chips. Tasty and reasonable prices too.
Excellent range of well kept beers at reasonable prices. Friendly staff and locals.
Quiz on a Thursday (hard!).
Good live music with a purpose built stage in the beer garden (under the viaduct).
Paid my first visit to this pub recently and what a brilliant pub. Loads of characture and very well kept beers. Called in at lunch time to find all beers on and a stunning barmaid who must have been 6 foot tall. Will be in regularly now
Excellent choice of beers. Up to 14 on my visit. Lovely multi-roomed inn with a real fire in use . Hardened crowd of real ale locals, and some pretty local lasses visible
Beers in good condition and prices consistent for the area.
Service a little patchy on my visit, but it's worth the wait.
A must on any pub crawl in the area. Should be in your top 3

The standards just keep rising ,a fantastic range of ales from all parts of the country. The choice is mind blowing!
Went once and now im a regular visitor. Most recently on Thursday which was Quiz night. Although the Quiz was quite hard, the beer was excellent and so was the service. Considering it was so busy, you would of thought it was a saturday. Just proves how busy it gets and how popular real ale is.
Went prior to game against Colchester - 16 Ales on the go and 1 Cider - had Stout, Porters, Milds, Light and Dark Ales - good quality, would certainly go again.
Great pub with some great ale. Food was very dissapointing, but don't let that put you off
Real ale utopia with sixteen handpumps offering a wide range of styles and strengths. I had Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Allgates California, Oakham Porter and Outstanding Stout, all of which were served in perfect condition. Undoubtedly one of the premier real ale pubs in the country. A nice cosy boozer with a friendly atmosphere to boot.
Visited before Saints game on 29 Aug. 16 real ales and 3 real ciders. Beers included some from Summer Wine brewery and Oakham. Two main bar areas with a separate room and a decent sized drinking area outside. Excellent pub.
Just found The Unshaggables videos on Youtube (eveslag1) They look OK? Should be a good Night?
Great Music pub. Looking forward to seeing Chanel McGregor on the 18th Sept . Can't believe they have a band called Snakeskin on at the same venue as Chantel? Just looked at their videos on Youtube (bassmanphil3) They are like Chalk & Cheese. What's The Landlord thinking of? Maybe some will like them but they are certainly not to my taste! Not seen The Unshaggables yet and could not find any videos for them so will have to wait and see? Good pub and a good night out!
Great pub with friendly well mannered staff, Excellent well kept beer upto 16 hand pumps Should have won pub of the year rather than runners up Recently installed new bar to cope with demand, a must visit pub live music at weekends, can not wait til next visit
This is how pubs should be, friendly atmosphere with a great choice of well kept beers. You'll rarely find the the same choice on consecutive days.
This pub just gets better and better. They have now extended the bar into what was the pool room, great for the busy band nights. The landlord Steve is now doing all the ordering of beers and looks after the cellar and the choice and quality has never been better. What a brilliant pub it should have won the National Pub of the Year title.
Can be a victim of its own success, but an amazing array of beers and great to pop in for a couple of pints in the day
Easily the best pub in Stockport, good mix of regulars and people there to sample ever changing roster of superb real ales.
Wonderful pub. Wide variety beers on offer and open fires. Friendly conversation at the bar or enjoy a quiet read in front of an a open fire in one of the rooms off the bar area.
Somewhat gutted that I have to withdraw my only-ever rating of 10 after my concern that one of the beers was iffy was summarily dismissed last week. It was changed eventually, but shouldn't be that difficult. Back with the nines, for now.
Absolutely rammed on 'Black Friday'. Usual varied selection of beers, mostly kept well, although as beers were going left right and centre I was unable to try them all! Unfortunately, to my horror, the landlord went into the cellar to change the beer and started pulling new (different) beer through WITHOUT CLEANING THE LINES. Come on, this is not what you expect from such an award-winning pub!!!

Great real ale pub. This pub is very convenient for commuters using the bus service through Stockport as it's only a stones throw from the station. Large selection of hand pumps, at least 10, and the Copper Dragon Golden Pippin was in superb condition at a very modest 2.10 a pint. A must see if in Stockport and a welcomed break in between all those Robinson's pubs!
The Crown is a true gem. Situated beneath the railway viaduct, just a few moments from the bus station this is a pub not to be missed. The interior consists a multi-roomed layout with traditional pub dcor, which is both welcoming and comfortable. There can be up to 16 real ales on the bar, which are always served in top class condition. If in Stockport you should pop in and sample The Crown for yourself!
Already reviewed, so just a note to declare this to still be shading my vote for best pub in the country (from those visited to date!). 16 handpumps, most of them usually on, serving quality beers from micros at good prices (from~2). Yesterday offered Abbeydale Last Rites (3.50ppint pretty good for those daring an 11% beer!), Abbeydale Black Mass (6.6%), Salopian Abbeygates & Darwins Origin, Pictish Alchemist, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Prospect Small Adventure & Silver Tally, Mayfields Troopers Gold, Slaters Queen Bee, Nelson Spanker, Acorn Golden Embers, Double Vision cider (7.4% just 2.30ppint!). In addition to the well-furnished, traditional, comfortable rooms to the left & rear of the bar the room to the right houses a pool table and the servery for food. Friendly, down-to-earth welcome, easy to chat to staff or fellow punters at bar; outstanding pub. They even do 4-pint takeaway jugs if youre off to the train but, after a heavy weekend, I wisely swerved that ystdy. Sod it, Im gonna up my rating from 9 to my first ever 10!
Never EVER fails me! Visiting football fans seek this place out above all others and for good reason. I always get a great pint (or six) and good conversation on the all too infrequent occasions I get back to Stockport.
Splendidly traditional pub virtually under the famous railway viaduct, serving what is probably the widest range of real ales in Stockport.
There's the usual multi-roomed layout with that warm cosy feel that such pubs have and which modern drinking barns can never hope to replicate.
Most of the beers were from local micros - my pint of Copper Dragon Golden Pippin was a tasty pint.
THe large drinking yard outside is used for music and barbecues and gives a splendid view of the viaduct.
Unfortunately however, the noise of the traffic thundering past on the M60 nearby is very audible.
Note the fine Ward's 150th Anniversary Plate ( 1840 - 1990 ) on an inside wall and the hops decorating the bar area.
If I only had time to do one pub in Stockport, this would be the one I'd make for.
Second visit in a week, and astounded by the quality of the beer, & welcoming atmosphere. Remember the lyrics "everywhere but nowhere baby", looks nothing from outside, especially when passing, but inside, cozy, atmospheric, and several small rooms where the ambience merge plus spacious outside area underneath Stockport 11 million brick railway viaduct. Memorable beers, 13 of the 16 hand pumps on including Bridge of Allan Caber Tosser, Celtic Gold, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, York brewery Peaches and cream, and oh my god!...Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild! Even the missus's lager was up to the mark! Well worth a visit!!
This is a superb pub and serves good quality real ales and plenty of them too. Lovely food at reasonable prices make it a good place to spend a bit of time. Multi roomed and situated under the arches of the railway.
Wow what a difference the new team have made to this wonderful pub. It is now clean and welcoming. The food (weekday lunch only)is fantastic. Live bands outside at weekends and burgers off the BBQ only 1.50 to help soak up the amazing 16 beers! Fantastic
Arguably the best pub in Stockport, which sadly isn't difficult as the choice is not vast. Great friendly atmosphere, always busy, multiple rooms, fantastic choice of ales and a great location.
Lovely multi-roomed layout with a great selection of beers. An interesting little display about the Stockport viaduct (which the pub sits under) too...
Excellent pub. Extensive range of hand pump beers, including real cider. Several different rooms. Homely atmosphere. Definately worth a visit.
Splendid multi roomed free house - makes a change in a town dominated, not surprisingly, by Robinsons pubs - the Crown is well worth seeking out.
Excellent range of real ales in a fine traditional and friendly atmosphere.
Do visit the pub garden at the back - the view looking up at the famous railway viaduct is simply awesome !
Sensationally good pub which is an absolute must whenever Im up North; only discovered its delights this year, but 16 real ales from local independents and micros, plus ciders, make it so. A friendly welcome at the airy bar with windows giving on to the street, classic (and classy) rooms off the bar, a beer garden almost literally beneath the adjacent viaduct (which I heard is europes longest continuous brick structure?). Beers are pulled thru as ordered, so nice & fresh; why oh why do I always forget to allow an extra day for Stockport session before heading back south? 8mins walk from train stn & less from mersey sq buses, live (open) folk jam Tues eves and other music listed on internal posters. There are a number of very good pubs in Stockport and this most definitely one of them, 9+.
Very much improved after changing hands. The improvements to the interior stand out when you go in, the superb range of real ales were in excellent condition, good friendly service, super pub.
Great pub with an excellent range of real ales and friendly welcome. Spacious beer garden. Well worth a visit.
Great place- location, beers and interior all very nice.
Never been in but there's always an antique bicycle locked to the railings outside everytime I drive past...

This pub is fastly improved over the last few months since the new management team took over.Mainly thanks to lesley for all her hard work and endeavour the pub as fast tracked to where it belongs, at the very top.It as been cleaned from head to toe and partially redecorated with further work imminent.Work starts on the kitchen and gents toilets this week, watch this space for details of kitchen opening.14 real ales and 1 real cider are available and live music 3 times weekly with a quiz on thursday.Mark my words future pub of the year.

Under new ownership and the difference has been noticed - pub cleaned from "head to toe" and new management team and bar staff are the best. Excellent and wide range of beers which are changed on a regular basis. Open 7 days a week on a lunchtime now - visit and see the difference.
Without a doubt, the finest choice of real ales in the area. The pub is undergoing something of a transformation and will soon be unrecognisable from the somewhat scruffy previous incarnation. Do yourself a favour and get down there (now open every lunch time as well!).
Some TV people went in a pub called The Bull & Finch in Boston and then created the Cheers bar. I swear that George Lucas popped into the Crown and then created that bar in the original Star Wars with all the aliens . . . Having said that, the Crown is one of my fave pubs in Stockport. Graham and Jeanette are wonderful Innkeepers, the beer there is second to none if you drink the real stuff, and there is always someone you know in there. Great pub if you don't mind the dodgy decor and the alien clientele!!
This pub has great beers and great staff but is the dirtiest pub I have ever been in. The toilets are a disgrace and the ladylady is the rudest I have ever come accross, so much so I would rather not go to the pub. I look forward to a change of landlord and landlady so that the pub can be visited again
Second time I've been in here. Great place. It has that sort of lived in look and feel, like me. As the previous people have said beer choice brilliant ( would have liked a mild or porter but hey that's being greedy) People very friendly - I didn't want to leave. That's my one criticism - it closes, should be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by law !
Great selection of beer and knitting aptterns.
Possibly the best pub I have ever being to. On a pre Motorhead-gig drinking session we discovered this gem of a pub under the immense Stockport viaduct. The selection of ale on offer was staggering and the staff were really friendly towards us(were from down South and thus not Local). Shed and Moth would like to extend out thanks to the delightful barmaid.

Beerwise, this has to be the best pub in Stockport A very well run pub, with usually >14 real ales available Most pleasant landlord & landlady Beer garden at rear Great live music regularly [I must agree, the grotty gents stop this pub getting 10/10]
This is the best pub I've ever been to regarding choice of real ale, BUT it is also one of the filthiest pub I have been to. Don't bring your girlfriend if you want to impress her! Toilets are absolutely disgusting and take a look under the benches, hasn't been cleaned under for years!!!!

Good old fahioned street corner boozer with added bite - up to 16, yes sixteen handpumps. Rock nite Thurs,
this pub rules and is full of happy faces and cheap ale.

Talk about spoilt for choice!Very well kept ale indeed.Though I prefer the Arden to the Crownfor all round quality.Still this place is not far behind at all

I can't believe that nobody has suggested this pub yet. It is the 'mecca' for beer drinkers in Stockport with an ever changing range of about a dozen beers in brilliant condition. Go there !
