Fullers pub in Newbury town centre. It feels fairly comfortable inside and stretches back a fair way, with plenty of seating. Ales were all from Fullers - Pride, ESB, Oliver's Island & Bengal Lancer. My ESB was ok. But the prices in here are certainly higher than average for Newbury.

Okay - but it is a bit steep £4.65 for a pint of premium lager in what is a pretty bog standard Fuller's food orientated pub.
a great location when the weather is right however it is faIrly overpriced and very 'manufactured'. if you want to go for overpriced beer in newbury, try the Newbury on Bartholemhew Street. nicer ambience and better food.
Nice location, but over-priced beer, in poor condition, served by unfriendly staff. Avoid.
A busy pub on a Saturday lunchtime, it took an over-long time to be served a nice pint of the ever-reliable London Pride. Never mind, the barmaid smiled and apologised twice: that does make all the difference. Crowded and, for me, a bit too noisy inside, but it was really pleasant sitting in the open by the edge of the river in the afternoon sunshine. You can watch folks driving by in their boats on the canal and operating the lock.

I have to update my previous review. wanted to eat here but everything we tried to order was off. Very disapointing.
I like this pub despite it being a little expensive. Lovely beers and quick service on my visit.
The only thing positive about this place is it's location. As several have mentioned before it has a reputation of unfriendly, even rude, staff and sky high prices. The last time I went there a bag of crisps was over 1. I told them politely to keep it and walked out. Never again until their attitude towards their customers changes.
Frighteningly expensive and frankly not worth it. Sunday lunctimes are always ruinied by some C-list jazz combo turning up at 2pm presumably in the strange belief the LSB is a music pub.
Fabulous location right by the canal and lock; very plesant interior with good verhanda and patio areas by the water - but - you will need to take your bank manager with you as the beer prices are well above the average and I think a bit of a rip-off. I was asked to pay 3.65 for Butcombe Bitter - a beer which I can easily get elsewhere for around 3.00 !! The gentleman who served may insisted the price reflected the quality of the pub and the beer! For that price I would have expected my personal waiter with free nibblies and a taxi home!!

2nd visit.
This pub now has a reputation amongst local residents for off-hand staff and sky-high prices. I ate here 2 weeks ago - food mediocre and outrageous prices for soft drinks.
A shame - nice location but ignorant management.
2nd pub on my mini crawl in Newbury. This is a gem - great location. Six ales on - including my favorite ESB - so I stayed for 2. Bar Staff were nice and friendly. The Times available to read at the bar. Smelt very much of Thai Fish Cakes.

Live music on a saturday night is good, though a bit loud.
Probably the most expensive pub in Newbury. The food is noice here though definately overpriced.
Bar staff are a bit stand-offish, and there is one nutcase there who shouts at you if you look at him wrong (told me to fuck off when I asked him to clear away my table, then lit up his fag and had a break- on the terrace).
Lovely position by the canal, but boy don't you pay for it!

Busy yesterday lunchtime with an amazing number of diners. I say amazing as the food prices are pretty steep! And why serve chips in a cup rather than on a plate with the rest of the meal?
Still, the beer was excellent if a little expensive (but then, aren't all Fullers pubs these days?) with Pride at 3.25. Discovery, ESB and Jack Frost also on offer and the guest was Hookey Bitter with Castle Rock Harvest on next.

Visited for the first time in ages on Saturday night. Busy but not overcrowded. The bar is in two sections. We sat near the smaller side, which had Pride, Red Fox and Amber on. The Red fox ran out quite quickly, and they didn't have another barrel to replace it. But the Pride was fine. The staff were good, but you can wait a fair while to get served in this section. Nice site by the canal and I think it would the terrace would be a pleasent place to eat on a summers day
General agreement was that this is the best pub in Newbury, unless you like to be mobbed by drunken 12 year olds.
Great location and nice atmosphere. Live music on a Saturday night and decent beers. Definitely one to return to.
Great location and beer good. Food is good but a bit pricey. Can get very crowded early evening. No football - Bliss!
Very pleasant pub with a pretty full range of Fuller's beers. The Honeydew was delightfully refreshing and the Hock showed things in good order in the cellar as well. If I were to be back in Newbury again, somewhere I would return to.

12.40 Monday Good friendly welcome from girl behind bar. 2 other people in pub. Had half a pint of Fullers Seasonal ale (forget name) very nice. Looked through menu with wife - worked out eventually that 9 or 10 3/4 meant 9.00 or 10.75 and realised why the pub was empty!!!! Bread was 3 1/2!!!! (3.50) We left. I am sure that pricing like this is not allowed as there was no indication as to what unit they were referring! Grrrrrr!
A Fullers house, Tucked away in a fantastic location overlooking the canal. Most Fullers ales on hand pump, all kept very well. Traditional and comfy interior.
Always loved this pub for it's location, and have always gone there over many years. Recently the covered area on the roof terrace has been removed however, which is mental - there is no shelter from rain or sun up there now, and smokers are also banned I believe despite this area being outside - so to be outside you now have to be down by the waterside - if you can get a table in this busy pub ithen it is still very enjoyable.
The beer cannot be faulted - in 12 or more years of going here on and off when visiting Newbury, I have never had a bad pint to my recollection.
Food is very pricey though, the only thing I would consider anywhere near value for money are the Sunday roasts, certainly nearly 10 for sausage & mash for example is crazy!
Superb location overlooking Newbury lock and St Nick's church, with plenty of seating outside and on the roof. Beer is always good but pricey and plenty to choose from, but service can be slow, and food is at best ok.
Don't understand the negative reviews. Pub is average but that means it's better than most in Newbury. Beer well kept (typical Fuller's pub in this respect), food OK, staff OK, nice location. Can get busy.
Absolutely disgusted by the way we were told as soon as we walked in on a very cold saturday lunch time to go and sit outside as we had a toddler with us!! Bearing in mind this is a pub located on the high street where all the shops are so families must go there a lot. And then even more disgusted when on my way out I realised there were at least 4 dogs in the pub, one of them only a foot away from the bar looking quite threatening. Unbelievable!
Three of us ate there last night....menu states pub stops serving food at 9PM - fair do's - got our order in at ten to - shouldn't have bothered! Rude disinterested barman - telling us we were too late nevertheless he did take the order - grudgingly! Food arrived - all we can say was rushed/tasteless - actually quite vile! You live and learn - wouldn't visit again! Such a shame as the actual pub is great - minus the unfriendly staff and unedible food!!
Having been to the pub twice, there will never be a third time!! The beer is mediocre, BUT the food has been disgusting on both occasions!
As we taken there by elderly relatives as a "treat" on both occasions,so I did not complain, also any estabilsment that is prepared to serve food this bad, isn't worth complaing to !
We were a group of six, and all chose different items from the menu. So this wasn't a case of one particular item being bad.
Live jazz on sundays (which is great if you're a jazz fan - I'm not. Nice pub though but the service can be very slow.
Ate here today. disgusting, greasy and cold. Asked to speak to chef spoke to some dirty lump with attitude. Beer was rubbish too
I was in Newbury for work and I came across this pub by chance. Seemingly recently-decorated, the pub was relatively busy for mid-afternoon and the unseasonably warm and sunny weather meant that I was able to sit out by the river enjoying a well-kept pint of Gales i.e. Fullers Swing Low. But 4.05 for a session-strength ale and a packet of crisps - is this the dearest pub in Newbury? I blanched at the cost which rather took the edge off my visit. In mitigation, the pub had no piped music when I was there, always a good thing in my opinion.
Great music and entertainment from the Bullfrog band. Hope to see them again at a later date at this venue. What a great evening. Excellent beer too.
what's the crack with removing the negative comments??? This pub was utter shite when I visited last summer and the review I left was 100% truthful-plates and glasses were absolutely everywhere.
As i posted in December, it has improved massively (probably due to change of landlord) and service and food are now pretty good. Still expensive though, but I suppose you can't have everything!

Had a lovely roast beef today, highly recommended. The London Pride was terrific too.

I was in here on Saturday night, despite summer's rubbish experience. It is much improved and was very busy. Staff seemed a lot better as well No idea if the food has improved though!

Don't see what the negative comments are for. I was in there last week, the food was fantastic and the beer is easily the best in Newbury. Toilets could do with a lick of paint though.
