Shut for redevelopment into skyscraper from the 25th March 2012. I recommend the George nr Crossharbour DLR instead.

Well its about time to call time at The City Pride. Having been a regular customer for some 15 years the latest drunken bar man episode is enough.
I dont mind if the staff have a drink with you. That is fine but for a young member of staff to be totally out of their tree and trying to get you pay for someone elses drink (which is another story) and then been abusive is another thing and then for the little manager to slam your money down and walk of cursing in french is just about it.
One would have thought after the drug fuelled sex den incident earlier this year Glendola Leisure would have installed a stable conservative manager. Hmmmm, no.
Such a shame that a local pub that has been enjoyed over the years has gone this way and no longer appears to care about its customers. The decline in foot fall has been a steady one. Is it the three price increases this year? The adequate food? The Camden attitude? The tip jars on the bar? The poor (it always has been) wine selection? The attitude of the management team? Could be a combination of everything.
I do know one thing that is not right and that is when one misses the last orders bell because one is assisting the staff to calm down and quietly remove an irate customer (any of the above) and the manager then refuses to serve you that last order because you missed the bell! That is not right.

So to sum up as it sounds like I am ranting. OK pub to pop into for a pint and a smoke as the outside area is well covered and has a bit of heating. Just dont go expecting any sort of customer service. If you want that then try...... hmmm, not a lot of choice. Try the Urban bar on a Friday night. Great entertainment and a late license.

Cheers

Great pub, atmosphere and serivce is best in the area. outside area i huge and will look lovely once the sun has returned.

Good food at reasobable prices, pool table upstairs and an excellent view of the Canary Wharf Business District

City Pride is one of the last remaining good traditional pubs within Canary Wharf. Its very large inside with an upstairs area, which can be hired out. I have been along to a couple of their Kurryoke nights, which are a great laugh! The food is great too and I would definitely recommend a visit!

No cask ales so I didn't stop for a drink. Just seemed like a typical chain pub.

Went to this pub with friends last Friday - had a great time in this excellent setting! We sat in the HUGE beer garden - all of us easily finding a seat! and were treated to some amazing live music.
The food was delicious and the unusual views were pretty wild (go there and check them out) felt like we were in New York!
Will absolutely be back!

Enjoyed another fantastic sunny day on the weekend at City Pride. It has a great buzzing atmosphere and would defiantly recommend it. There is a big sunny beer garden, right by the water, so has a lovely setting if youre outside enjoying the weather. The food is always great and staff are always friendly. Get yourself down there for a great afternoon or evening!

I'd heard City Pride was closing down so I hadn't been down for a while- what a fool I was! I love this pub, its a traditional English Pub right in the heart of the docklands. You feel like you've stumbled upon a little oasis as soon as you see it. The staff are great fun and promised me that the pub would be open this year but couldn't promise about next. This might be our last Summer to enjoy the Beer Garden! The Beer Garden is without question the best I have found in London, its huge and there is always a fantastic atmosphere.
The pub has a great choice of beer, they have 'real ale' which my northern mates raved about- apparently you can't beat it- they have a really excellent wine list and a nice menu. I'm working through the wine menu but I don't feel it would be fair to recommend one until I've tried them all a few more times! (I'll be sat in the beer garden for most of the summer conducting this research if anyone is looking for me, hope to see you there.)

Was recently in the City Pride on Marathon Day and must admit it was probably one of the best days out in quite some time. We were told to go there since it was a good place to watch our pal dragging his way over 26 miles and we were not dissapointed. They had a couple of live bands on who were excellent, ate our fill of burgers and hots dogs from the BBQ and obviously had a few pints, I'm a convert to old speckled hen! Anyways 7 of us got a table in the beer garden and had a blast and even the staff, who were run off there feet, had time for a bit of banter and a laugh. Managed to cheer on Daniel as he ran by at around 1.30pm then spend the rest of the day in the sunshine. We will definetly be back so congratulations to the City Pride for a great day. (Gave you a 9 out of 10 since I got sunburn)

I have just returned from what can only be described as a truly shocking experience at the City Pride. I was with a group of colleagues whom for most of us was our first visit to this establishment (it will now be our last visit).
The pub was not when we arrived busy, we sat down made our choice for lunch and went to the bar to order and pay. After standing at the bar being ignored for 20 minutes we where finally served by a "new" member of staff through no fault of their own had not been shown how to use the till system correctly so the ordering process took some time, that however i am afraid was the best part of our experience there. After another 30 minutes our food started to arrive in dribs and drabs, 2 lunches arrived 2 to go. The second 2 where both incorrect only for the manager to arrive with another 2 plates of food, 1 correct one incorrect. The manager then shouted at one of my colleagues for having an incorrect order in front of her (his bar staff had placed it there). We then explained the fourth lunch was still incorrect. He said he would reorder and it would arrive shortly, there was no apology for the mix up just a totally attitude and rudeness at the fact we was actually asking for what we had ordered. Whilst the 3 of us polished off our lunches the fourth lunch was still no where in sight. Myself and my colleague who was still waiting went to the bar to ask to speak to the manager, when the manager arrived he shrugged he shoulders and muttered that he hadnt reordered the lunch! He offered my colleague a refund (which she took), all well and good but we had been in there for over an hour and she was now not going to have time to get something. I then said to the manager that this was our first visit and we where totally unhappy with the service, i was not rude i just merely stated that the service wasnt up to scratch, the response i got was as follows; City Pride Manager you cant say that, i dont recognise your face, you dont come here before" i replied "no i dont and i wont be coming back either", City Pride Manager "I dont like you, your mouth stinks" I told him i would not be coming back and walked off and left. There in all of this was no apology for the delay/mix-up/bad service. If this pub is facing closure then i really would not be surprised with staff like that in charge. There are so many good places to eat and drink in the wharf i would advise anyone to avoid it like the plague; normally its the customers with the attitude not the management. If its a good traditional pub your looking for, please can i recommend you take a stroll down poplar high street, they is a great traditional pub there, the food, drink is lovely and service is with a smile not an insult!

Just saw on the front page of the Docklands paper today that the City Pride is going to be open for a while yet...
edglen - 6 Jan 2009 19:45
The City Pride is definitely not closing and I'm heading down there for New Year... its such a relief as its one of my favourite traditional pubs and the only one of its kind in that area, the food is delicious (had the spicy bacon pasta last week - divine!) and am looking forward to using the beer garden in 09 - anyone joining me for New Year?!
Angelina_Jansa - 23 Dec 2008 16:09
Yes I heard the same! spoke to the manager who said would be open for a good while into 2009 which is a relief as its my favourite in the area and the food is reasonably priced and really good, booked our christmas dinner there so will also celebrate to the fact we can enjoy City Pride longer than expected!
Scarlett3 - 12 Dec 2008 12:51
Was down there for a party last night and was gutted to hear the pub may be closing. Spoke one of the managers who told us they are still going to be open in the new year for a few months. We will be sad to see it go but at least we can take advantage of their hospitality for a while in 2009.
edglen - 12 Dec 2008 12:24
Will be sad to see it go. Only really one pub left in that area now.
thenightwatchman - 22 Nov 2008 15:56
Having read that its days are numbered, I made a point of visiting what I hoped would be one of the last traditional old style pubs left in Docklands. It looks like I was already a few years too late. The City Pride is pretty much the template on the sort of pubs that leaves me sobbing into the bottom of my pint glass. The characterless and faceless interior has undergone a typical modern refurbishment that leaves lttle of interest or focus. The beer selection was starndard and the only Ale (Tetleys) was off. Prices are high (Guiness 3.60) and served by disinterested euru-staff. There are a couple of raised sections and plenty of pillars to find a tucked away table but ultimately, the ambience is sterile and contrived. The plasma screen was tuned to Kiss FM and supplied an endless diet of dull music. On the plus side, there is a decent enough large beer patio to the rear with several picnic tables although the views of the surrounding towers is not particularly picturesque. I dare say there is an appeal here for some people but the place did little for me and it was not the traditional boozer I was hoping to find. Whilst I rue the demise of another pub, it is not somewhere I would hurry back to whilst it is still around.
RogerB - 23 Sep 2008 12:03
Good compared to the rest of the pubs in the area but very ordinary when compared to normal places. Aboit to demolished and be the site for yet another tower (62 storeys)
Glasgowboy - 10 Sep 2008 15:08
Been here a lot as it is local to work, after the Heron closed. Emma behind the bar is great, very friendly and works hard(no relation). The beer is ok, but mostly lagers, so only John Smiths or Guinness, but it will be gone next year as mentioned already.

The plot of land upon which the City Pride is situated has just been sold to developers for a staggering 32 million!
Montella - 10 Jun 2008 02:50
Pretty popular, but nothing terribly special about it; I guess its popularity reflects the dearth of decent pubs in this particularly benighted part of London.
Redriley - 4 Apr 2008 18:40
Nice enough but if it's been there since the 1920's you wouldn't know. The makeover makes it just as characterless as other modern pubs in my opinion. I stopped here for a quick pint and some food (food nothing special but would eat there again) and then headed for the North Pole for some character
Bob_the_Bodger - 9 Jan 2008 18:58
great pub short walking distance from home great for a few pints and tables now been cleaned since smoking ban
keirah - 3 Aug 2007 18:39
Looks great from the outside, but on venturing inside found that there was a choice of lager, lager, lager, lager, lager, lager or Nitro-keg Tetley.

Thank God for the North Pole...
PistBloke - 29 Jul 2007 11:30
great pub but they could clean the tables
keirah - 4 Jun 2007 14:52
Have used this pub intermittently over 10 years and it's gone up and down - is very like the Wharf pubs now - characterless and generic - but still plenty of room and nice to sit outside on a sunny day. I believe it's recently under new management - and the food this weekend was attrocious - the skin on chips tasted like microchips instead of potato and it had to have been the driest burger i've ever had - plus our order was brought out incorrectly twice ! The toilet could do with a bit of tender loving care as well.

Still somewhere i'll go again Champagne and wine used to be good here and the food used to be reasonable - let's see how it goes.
anonymous - 12 Apr 2007 11:43
Handy after-work alternative to the characterless chain bars that characterise the area: this is an old 1920s dockers pub with a ('salmon pink') modern makeover. It hasn't got much more character than the chain bars, however. It's full of braying bankers and the drink is horribly overpriced - well over 3 for a pint of anything. The food has gotten much better of late and is more resonably-priced than the drink. Good 'gourmet burger'.
Greshon - 17 Feb 2007 10:17
I've been coming here on and off for the last year or so. The food has improved 100% and I regularly recommend it to anyone if I know they'll be in the area so I just don't understand the comment from monkeyjoe - maybe the chef was on vacation!
I do agree about one or two of the staff having a bad attitude though, and the managers attitude is apalling! I've witnessed her being incredibly rude to customers and staff more than once - just not professional. 9 out of 10 based on the usual standard of food, 2 out of 10 based on staff attitude.
Ali.J - 2 Feb 2007 11:50
Not a bad boozer. A bit lifeless but ideal in the summmer for a nice pint outside. Now that the Heron has closed it is doing a good trade, but not a local by any means.

Would advise going here for a meal as the food is excellent. Nice pub, wrong location.
anonymous - 4 Dec 2006 11:32
Now that the Heron has closed, possibly the best pub in the area.
anonymous - 1 Dec 2006 00:51
Clear decor, no real ale, San Miguel instead. So much has changed around here, so many people but it's got no soul ...
beeronaut - 23 Mar 2006 19:49
Was one of the first gay bars in east london; Circa 1970,
Changed it's name several times, But originally called, the city arms. next door the rogue trader, originally called the blacksmiths arms was extremely busy through the week and weekends, so was the anchor and hope next door, All the pubs on the island were very darts orientated.
moncrief - 12 Jan 2006 02:23
staff are very friendly, nice in summer although it would be better if they did table service outside in the summer.
tullster - 6 Nov 2005 17:54
usually go here once a week. Not the most exciting of bars and pricey but does do good food.
makavelli - 23 Apr 2005 22:03
Been using the pub on and off for a few years as I work in CW. The refurb' has been done well without it becoming a ""trendy winebar"", the staff are freindly and it's not too busy or too quiet.

Pitty they only have one pool table upstairs now though.
Richard Sullivan - 16 Nov 2004 13:18
A regular? Me? No. I only pop in about 5-6 times a week. How long have I been doing that? About 8 years. Had to have a break from it in about 2000. I was barred for complaining about the newly laid carpark! Still, that landlord has now left. Which is nice. Great place, great beer, great food, great staff (you always get the odd one) especially the polish girls. The place had a total refit at xmas. It was closed for some 6 weeks. I was like a little lost puppy. Just about got used to the refit now but I still miss the scrappy old carpet.
I would give it a 10, but nothing is worth a ten.
