The Red Lion, Godalming

I'm laughing my head off about some of these reviews. Obviously the chap with "big white phone to god" syndrome had an unpleasant meal. Is this place still open? Agree about potential. This place has it.

The Crown and Cushion, Haslemere

Not actually bad, just a bit unwelcoming really. The town is crying out for a decent pub and unfortunately this one doesn't make the grade. Charmless wouldbe a good word to describe it - a bit taxi driver, if you know what I mean. I had a particularly rough pint of 6X too.

19 Nov 2009 13:49

Masons Arms, Morpeth

Albert, that is the funniest review I have ever read. I have nothing to say about the pub though.

22 Sep 2009 14:43

Trax / The Star, Havant

Glad to hear its closed.

26 Jun 2008 10:24

The Ship Inn, North Berwick

Tourist Pub. average food, crap service.

21 Feb 2008 11:17

The Hamilton Arms, Stedham

Thai food is expensive and not particularly good. as a pub it would be great. Terrible decor in the resaurant. Nothing like a London pub at all. Distinctly rural with a rural atmosphere. good range of ales and generally good atmosphere.

The Hand and Spear, Weybridge

2.85, that's allright then isn't it, miles away from being a rip off 3 squid.

12 Mar 2007 15:25

Camels Hump, Middlesbrough

The hump is certainly what you get on entering this establishment. More of student pub really . usually full of them and the local n'er do wells/university hangers on. Appalling by most standards. Good if like lager and blue drinks.

16 Feb 2007 11:21

The Hand and Spear, Weybridge

Recently refurbished to amazingly high standards. The question now is, is this a pub or a restaurant with a bar area. I would say the latter. Beer is over 3.00 a pint (youngs bitter) and you have to wait an age, even at less busy times due to the newly hired staff. This place is more aimed at corporate market than the serious pub heads, food is thus very good. All that glitters is not gold!

14 Feb 2007 11:47

Commercial Inn, Dunfermline

Good drinking establishment. Agree with all comments below. Moderate range of ale and well kept. Could do with a few more handpumps I feel, but overall pretty good selection.

9 Feb 2007 09:18

The York Brewery, York

How many good pubs are there in this town? after living in exile in the southwest for sometime I was amazed on my return to the northeast at how many real pubs there are serving a decent pint. Very comfortable and pleasant place to drink.

6 Feb 2007 13:05

The Brewery Tap, Peterborough

What more could you want. Real ales a plenty and european bottled beer. Thai food is excellent and the surroundings are warm if unusual. I found peace at the Brewery tap in an otherwise souless town, bereft of decent pubs (well maybe there's a couple). Soft furnishings aplenty howevr may not appeal to everyone.;

6 Feb 2007 12:59

The British Volunteer, Weybridge

Probably the best pub in Weybridge (not difficult) for a good pint and cosy atmosphere. Staff friendly if a little slow. Landlord and Harveys and summer lightning were on tap at the time of my visit - all excellent.

5 Feb 2007 15:53

The White Horse, Haslemere

Decent enough atmosphere, trying a bit too hard however on the soft furnishing front. The range of ales on H/P is pretty good and well kept. Menu is uninspiring.

Not bad, but could do better would be my verdict

9 Jan 2007 10:01

The Mill Tavern, Haslemere

Probably one of the better pubs in the area. Excells at serving good white plate food. On the day of my visit (Christmas eve) it was very busy, however my food order came out quickly and perfectly cooked. Range of ales was adequate too. Pleasant atmosphere, very enjoyable. bar staff were very friendly and helpful too despite being busy.

9 Jan 2007 09:57

The Queens Head, Weybridge

Crap food, too expensive, and not exceptionally nice surroundings. Typically over pretentious beer selection and only one ale on at the time of my visit. I'm not saying this pub is bad, its just average.

14 Nov 2006 16:31

The White Horse, Haslemere

Very inresting interior, very modern and quite stylish. Nice relaxing atmosphere during the week, in which one can enjoy a pint. Good choice of ales - Robinsons Lighthouse particularly good at the time of visit. Menu was limited and a bit "standard" in choice but hey, I came here to drink and not to worry about the menu. 6/10 for the good vibe and low key lighting.

20 Sep 2006 15:34

The Compasses, Egham

Unusual pub for Surrey, in that 1) Its very friendly if a bit "local" and 2) serves a decent pint! Interior warm and welcoming with that beer light amber glow.

3 Jul 2006 11:04

The Robin Hood, Egham

Possibly the most miiserable pub in Egham. Very unfriendly with spit and feathers kind of decor. The compasses is leagues ahead in real ale and environment

3 Jul 2006 11:01

The Litten Tree, Staines

Another really bad drinking pplace that will only be missed by the large exhaust brigade. Adios Littern tree!

3 Jul 2006 10:59

The Toad at Two Rivers, Staines

Goodbye to bad news. Sadly it looks like this place will be replaced by something equally bad.

3 Jul 2006 10:57

Ship Inn, Langstone

Great location, which makes this place a bit bit of a honey pot - one of those drive to pubs, which can be a bit of a distraction and also makes the staff a little complaicent. Although generally I like the place, my gripes are that everytinme I go in here the locals get served way ahead of me (frustrating) and the bar staff never know what "todays pasta sauce" is (6 times in asking). Ale is well kept with the best of gales and Fullers on tap. I prefer going here in the winter, but if your from out of town, this place will serve you well for a great summer evening of drinking. Food is better at the Royal Oak across the harbour however (less deep fried stufff).

21 Jun 2006 14:11

The Railway Inn, Lochmaben

OK, so like many scottish pubs, there is no real ale, but as in many scottish pubs nobody drinks the stuff anyway. Deuchars IPA would be appreciated as a standard. A bit big telly for my liking, however the Landlord was great. We asked if food was available at 4.00pm on a Sunday afternoon and despite trhe fact that it was not, the chef prepared me and my colleague the best club sandwich ever - indicating that food here may be all round pretty good. Many thakns to him for great hospitallity.

7 Jun 2006 14:16

Robert The Bruce, Dumfries

Ok, so opinions are divided on weatherspoons pubs as they largley follow the same formula - great building, boring decor, cheap booze and sub-basic deep fried food. They are always run to be the most efficient means that they can be, and this usually involves giving the staff a rough deal. So there's the bad bit out of the way first.

Like most Scottish Weatherspoons however (see my other reviews) this one is a lot better thany any of its English counterparts and has a good range of ale despite most people preferring the cheap colored drinks. Moderatley friendly if a bit basic - I actually enjoyed being there.

7 Jun 2006 14:09

The New Bazaar, Dumfries

Reasonably friendly public house with a modest range of real ales on the go. At the time of my visit (Friday night) things were a bit quiet and the guest ale was london pride - not great if you've just got off th the train from london. A small gripe perhaps aginst a pretty solid pub. My overall rating would be 6.5.

7 Jun 2006 14:00

The Cross Keys Hotel, Peebles

Vast empty space with little to no character. Very popular on a Friday night. No pool table as it apparently attracts the wrong types! A couple of ales on but essentially this place is mediocre. I like carpet, velour and atmosphere.

30 May 2006 14:05

The Red Lion, Godalming

Great pub, which you probably already know about. Listed in the good beer guide this is a super pub. Great pint of Harveys best (at the time of visit) - almost as good as the one I had in Lewes! Good food and cosy interior this place could be a contender for best pub in south surrey. Believe me I don't normally visit the outer reaches of surrey fopr political reasons but this place is good.

Whitelocks, Leeds

Possibly onr of the best city centre pubs I have ever been too (and I've been to a lot!). Great selection of ales, intimae atmosphere, made cosier by the already described ornate interior. warm, and inviting with a coppery glow this pub is to be enjoyed - relished in fact over a slow pint.

The Swan Hotel, Haslemere

There is no such thing as a good weatherspoons pub. They're all the same. Like they were hatched from the eggs of satan itself, where the weatherspoons chain Mcpubbed pubs, the rest of the world has surely followed with an army of deep fat friers and child friendly areas.

17 May 2006 10:54

The Britannia Inn, Darlington

Proper public house. Slighty skewed beer selection at the time of my visit - all dark ales or typically northern Ruby ales. I like the basic nature of the place, not at all pretentious. Has been named Darlington CAMRA pub of the year.

2 May 2006 13:32

Hurst Arms, Eastbourne

Possibly the best pint of Harvey's going. No nonsense boozer with lazer-precise-level pool table and dart board. Fine establishment for the real pub lover.

2 May 2006 13:10

The Brown Bear, Sheffield

Surprised to see that sam Smiths actually do a hand pull ale and even more surprised that it is drinkable (and cheap @ 1.33 a pint). Now for the bad news. This pub is filthy and sticky to boot (sticks to boots!). Drinking here was borderline hygenic, eating here, I feel, would be an altogether different microbiological struggle. 5/10 for not being a doot de dooh music pub.

19 Apr 2006 13:45

The Frog and Parrot, Sheffield

Its gone down hill since I last visited Sheffield (admitedly sometime ago). Too much doot de dooh music for my liking. When I visited on the good Friday night, things seemed to be OK (just OK). Whence I returned on the Saturday night however, I was amazed at the transformation into a third rate disco (should of seen "the thing" that was disc jockeying!).

Fantastically kept ales however, despite the fact that mosdt people were drinking oddly coloured beverages or syntho-lager. I prefered the Devonshire Cat otr the Rutland arms.

19 Apr 2006 13:38

Ferryboat Inn, Helford Passage

Just as you would expect from the drive to a pub for a cheap dinner brigade (see below).

19 Apr 2006 13:29

The Fat Cat, Sheffield

Just the greatest pub ever. I wa truly happy to find this place. It has a kind of magic atmosphere and truly the best pint of ale (pale rider) I have ever had the pleasure to be served with. Amazing.

19 Apr 2006 13:20

The Wheeltapper, Rugby

This pub is so bad! Do walk past this place and on your way, roll in a grenade! When the smoke dies down, enter and retrieve those stolen golf clubs of yours that some dude would of being fencing had he not being blasted away. This pub should only be entered by CID - and not just for a drink. This could be the only instance where excessive police brutality would be pleasing to see in operation.

13 Apr 2006 15:54

The Bell, Bath

Top public house. Great relaxed atmosphere - no suits etc. good ale and friendly staff. Probably not to everyones taste (mock bohemiam types) but if you like summer lightning then this place is a must.

13 Apr 2006 15:44

The Coeur de Lion, Bath

Full of right wingers and biggots. Avoid if you have any socialist tendancies despite the half decent ale. Not too many ladies present either - weird atmosphere!

13 Apr 2006 15:41

The Alehouse, Bath

Too many idiots walking in from the park to make this a comfortable pub. Friendly but not overly warm. At the time of my visit the London pride was appallingly flat. Average.

13 Apr 2006 15:36

The Wheeltapper, Rugby

This was the worse pub I ever visited. If I return it will be with a large calibre weapon and a flame thrower. This is not a reasonable place at all and infact I've never fealt so threatened in a public house, just for being there.

10 Apr 2006 17:06

Mallards, Midsomer Norton

This is the worst pub I've ever had the displeasure to go in, its more like a barn inside with a few oddly coloured drinks for sale. No carpet, very few tables and no atmosphere. Plenty of under age drug dealing types however. My previous low eb being at the wheeltapper in Rugby (truly dire). Avoid this pub like HIV, infact don't go to midsomer Norton full stop, it has got to be Britain's worst town.

10 Apr 2006 17:03

The Quaker Coffee House, Darlington

Dell 72 and Darwins are mislead by their own stiffled self conciousness. 22's sucks bad and needs to be invaded by class war I agree, Tanners is owned by the facist brigade otherwise known as wetherspoons and as for the Boot ... who the hell goes there? This is a real ale pub in Darlington, never mind if theres Goth's in it, what would you prefer? Doot dee doo music crowd ala radio 1 of a Friday night!

23 Mar 2006 16:06

The Alexander Bain, Wick

Probably the only place in Wick that a pint of real ale can be found amongst the ocean of the big T. If they have got it on, try the dark island - magic brew. Too family orientated for my liking but there is very little choice in Wick and the so called manager was a bumbling idiot, who appeared to be more interested in fauning over the Polish bar maid than serving a pint.

23 Mar 2006 15:52

The Peveril Of The Peak, Castlefield

Superb atmosphere despite the inevitable suit invasion at around 6.00pm. Good ales, great traditional interior and bizare setting make this a must visit for the ale drinker.

23 Mar 2006 15:42

The Bridge, Manchester

Changed my mind over the review I gave below. Whilst the good food still pervades, the ale situation has taken a turn for the worse. On the past three random ocassions that I have taken the effort to come here there has been no ale, prompting me to do a U turn and head for the peveril.

Atmosphere has taken a dive too.

23 Mar 2006 15:39

The Dolphin, Weymouth

This is a strange pub no doubt about it. The comments below must refer to a time when this pub actually cared about real ale and comfortable surroundings. Trading off the back of (a hopefully soon to be recalled)good beer guide recomendation and the successful hopback beer range, this pub is of no interest to trad pub lovers. My main beef with this place is that given my visit was on a saturday evening, all four ales were off (could no one could be bothered to change any barrel?). secondly the place was empty, when all the other pubs were busy, which I felt was indicative of a poorly run pub. Crap entertainment (Mr guitar Karaoke) and terrible furnishings. This pub caters more for the football crowd (rangers Vs celtic nonesense)and the freak show that has was left behind when the circus came to town. Don't go here - try the boot, its leagues ahead.

14 Feb 2006 08:09

The Marquis of Granby, Weymouth

Looks terrible, like a McPub. Full of families no doubt and people who like deep fried food. Thes places should be destroyed.

3 Feb 2006 15:19

The Robin Hood, Havant

Better than most pubs in the area. Annoyingly however I got localled (served out of turn in a less than favourable manner). Can be full of market traders and general riff-raff at the end of the working day. generally not as pleasant as its sister pub (The House) around the corner. George Gale ales are not the best kept.

18 Jan 2006 14:38

The Curlew, Havant

Typical estate boozer really. Average food and not particulary nice inside either. Just check the photo above as this provides evidence for the misery that is the curlew. On a plus note staff were very decent and the ales (Gales) were well kept.

18 Jan 2006 14:32

The Red Pig, Keighley

Seems a reasonable place. Came in here one night after a mission and found it very friendly, both staff and customers greeted us well (were not local!). Even better is this pubs proximity to the dodgey kebab shop two doors down. hop out for a burger in the middle of a session why don't you!
Not the greatest selection of ales on tap however.

4 Jan 2006 16:52

Hogans, Darlington

A good friend of mine once said that he would rather pay a bit extra in order to enjoy a good pint in nice surroundings. It would be wise to use that philosphy in regard to Hogans.

3 Jan 2006 16:59

The Crown Inn, Manfield

Very in keeping with my theory that: All pubs in County Durham are crap and, it is not until you go over the border to north yorkshire, that a decent ale and alehouse can be found. This is a welcoming real ale pub which is the little brother of Number 22's in Darlington. There are a few biggots that frequent here but mainly the cliental is sound. Be aware however that white boar ale is in some way connected to fox hunting.

20 Dec 2005 14:07

The Bridge, Manchester

This surely is the blue print for public houses who want to serve food. Soft red velvety lighting, good ale and superb food make this an enchanting place to visit. Dining area is separated from the bar and as far as I can remember, I have never seen any children (accompanied or otherwise)in here. Relaxing and very friendly place to be.

20 Dec 2005 13:46

The Rambler Country House, Edale

Just average.

20 Dec 2005 13:35

The Town Hall, Staines

plastic mcPub of the dire big telly variety. Nice building but a poor public house. In saying that however, where does one go for a drink in Staines?

20 Dec 2005 13:24

Number 22 Alehouse and Canteen, Darlington

Great pub, despite its links with the fox hunting crowd. There are always numerous and an ever changing range of ales to chose from. Last time I visited the food was pretty good too. There is even a great selection of wines for the ladies. Beware however the upper class twit crowd that inhabit this place of a Friday evening (don't they know its 2005?). Under such circumstances one should decamp to either the quaker or the Brittania.

20 Dec 2005 13:21

The Quaker Coffee House, Darlington

This is a great little pub, tucked away in one of darlingtons "old yards", situated between two of the main streets. Always a good selection of ale to chose from, pleasing atmosphere with plenty of rock music on offer. Can get a bit busy on a weekend, but what the hell, considering the small number of places one can enjoy a proper beer in Darlington, my quarm is small.

20 Dec 2005 13:15

Quakers Yard Inn, Quakers Yard

This is a great little pub, tucked away in one of darlingtons "old yards", situated between two of the main streets. Always a good selection of ale to chose from, pleasing atmosphere with plenty of rock music on offer. Can get a bit busy on a weekend, but what the hell, considering the small number of places one can enjoy a proper beer in Darlington, my quarm is small.

20 Dec 2005 13:14

The Apsley House, Southsea

Yep, I like this place as do a lot of my friends. Superb location in aside street off of the sea front. Good (rock) crowd of peoplec usually drink here making it a crap music free zone almost. Good ale, with a regular turnover of guests. NEDRAD wold certainly approve.

9 Dec 2005 14:04

The Cobden Arms, Havant

This is the kind of pub that you should avoid. From the outside it looks promising, however the inside is about as welcoming as a skunk in your wardrobe. I went here for a pre wedding drink (St Josephs) and was not at all impressed. Obviously smart attire is not seen in these parts too often. 4/10 for at least having something almost worth drinking.

9 Dec 2005 14:01

Trax / The Star, Havant

The "pikey" comment is about spot on for this place is exceptuionally bad. Its not really a pub - more a gathering point for people who like bad music played at extreme volumes in the company of mutants. Stay away fro thi place if you should ever venture to Havant as there is a better pub in The Old House At Home (South St.). Remarkably this is a George Gales pub too, so there is ale on tap, hence 1/10.

9 Dec 2005 13:54

The Six Bells, Havant

Just another bad boozer essentially. No ale on tap and about as friendly as an angry viper in a bear pit. For down to earth read inverted snobbery. This is a truly dire pub.

9 Dec 2005 13:49

The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh

Great city atmosphere, good ale and just a great environment in which to have a beer. I agree entirely with the other comments. NEDRAD Approved.

9 Dec 2005 13:32

Ferryboat Inn, Helford Passage

This is one of those pubs that is firmly in the "could be great if only" category. Overly twee and poor service from the staff added to the overall disappointing experience. Something that really sticks in my mind is all the "Do Not" notices plastered everywhere.

9 Dec 2005 13:26

The Bridge Inn, Peebles

Very good public house and a rarity in the scottish borders. Real ale and plenty of single malts on offer. Deuchars IPA. Very efficient and knowledgable bar staff. Given that there is hardly a decent pub in this entire area of scotland this pub is remarkable. NEDRAD approved.

9 Dec 2005 13:15

The Crown Inn, Stockport

Possibly the best pub I have ever being to. On a pre Motorhead-gig drinking session we discovered this gem of a pub under the immense Stockport viaduct. The selection of ale on offer was staggering and the staff were really friendly towards us(were from down South and thus not Local). Shed and Moth would like to extend out thanks to the delightful barmaid.
