please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I always find it useful when a glowing review is posted, to look at the date the reviewer joined BITE and how many reviews they've made. Just saying.

I have to say that I have been visiting this place for a few years now, and despite it being very busy during peak summer months, I have never been disappointed. The food is freshly cooked and portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable in comparison to similar pubs/restaurants in the area. The steaks are renowned in my group of friends to be amazing, and the desserts (if we have room) are always delicious. The riverside is a perfect location for spending a summer afternoon or evening, and all staff try their hardest to make your stay enjoyable and as easy as possible. Book at peak times to avoid disappointment, and (unlike other reviewers on here, seemingly) have a bit of compassion for when it is incredibly busy. I'd like to see any of you run such a busy pub!

It looked delightful but unfortunately:
The waitress was so busy chatting to her mates she got my order wrong
The garlic bread was drenched in oil and not at all crispy
The chips were not cooked in hot enough fat
The fishcakes were extremely spicey- no warning of this on the menu and then the manageress shouted at me that I should have asked! Oh, yes and they were deep-fried! Good grief.
Over-priced by at least 3 per dish.
POoor, poor poor.
Would never ever go back there. Should have eaten at Mac Donalds!

Terrible meal at this pub on Sunday 12th June 2011. Sent back the fish as it was swimming in butter and covered in salt to such an extent that you couldn't taste the Sole. Although I was offered another option, I think this was maybe worse - overcooked soggy Plaice, the bone was impossible to remove and the whole dish collapsed - prawns had been boiled and this was tastless and the vegetables a disgrace as they were also soggy and colourless - this time I was ignored by the 'hostess' who probably knew herself how bad it was but then chose to argue with me that she and the chef had both tasted the dishes and said that they were fine and still charged 13 for an inedible lunch.

We won't be going back and suggest you don't go either.

Lovely location for a summer bank holiday lunch
Unfortunately all down hill after we arrived for a family meal
Huge queues at the bar, but we were taken to our table that we reserved.
We ordered drinks immediatley that took nearly an hour to come - it was really hot in the restaurant part and we were all wilting.
The food was very average and again took over an hour to come
They say fish is a speciality - but they forgot to include the dressing on the sea bass
The cheesburger was the worst I have ever seen - made Mcdonalds look good. It had a slice of that plastic orange cheese just dumped in the roll - not even heated or slightly melted. Just cold like a flacid piece of lino - shocking!
The waitress did her best, but it was clear that the owners had no interest in staffing to appropriate numbers for the holiday
We will not return

Very disappointed with food - we ordered 2 Ploughmans, on the menu it said served with warm wholemeal baguette, what it didnt say was that is was three small slices of one of those cheap small baguettes - there was a massive lump of cheese in one basket and a much smaller slice in the other, a big hard tomato each, some chutney, a rocket leaf or two and maybe a couple of other leaves - nothing like a traditional pub ploughmans and in my opinion massively overpriced for what you get. Complained to server and he said it was standard, tried to complain to a senior lady possibly landlady - she was too busy to come into the garden and asked me to take food back to bar. Very poor customer service from someone who should probably have known better.

Please, if you want polite service and a child friendly landlord and staff, DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB. We were treated so rudely and made to feel so bad by the landlord. My two friends with their two little boys aged 12 months and 18 months ate their food in highchairs. inevitably they made a bit of a mess on the floor which one mum offered to sweep up, she had already been on her hands and knees under the table getting bits off the floor. when it came to us leaving, (and this is the bit that annoys me the most) the land lord shouted in a very loud voice, totally uncalled for, that the floor was such a mess. He was thoroughly unpleasant, the whole bar heard him and my friends were made to look small.

My answer is if you allow youngsters in a restaurant you are going to get this sort of problem. Secondly, when my friends first arrived they made a point of asking where the staff would like to seat them because of having such young ones. They should have shown my friends to a table on the stone floor, rather than a carpeted floor.

But no matter what, nobody deserves to be treated the way my friends were especially not by the landlord. I guess there is no accounting for ignorance!!

Driving up to this pub, your heart soars as you see the original old building, the River Thame and the excellent gardens complete with very impressive children's play equipment.

However, inside the place is utterly soul destroying. The larger part of the place is a large, totally incongruous extension which has been fitted out in the Beefeater/Harvester style. We even walked in past one of those "crowd control" retractable tape barriers, which I imagine was there to shepherd the queue for the empty salad bar.

Greene King beers, IPA and Speckled Hen (yes, GK brew Hen these days), not very inspiring, but OK condition.

Food was acceptable (my expectations were lowered by the salad bar and crowd control) and staff efficient and friendly, although you have to place your food order at the bar where the staff have to use a touch screen till that would probably be better suited to a Fisher Price "My first restaurant". Slow pointless and frustrating for staff and punter alike.

Basically this place is saved from utter mediocrity by it's location and great kids facilities.

I have enjoyed several pints of Greene King IPA at The Old Fisherman, on a hot summers evening, sat down by the river, but had never sampled the delights of their kitchen until tonight.

The food was found to be most agreeable, and much enjoyed by all of us. The lack of pretence of the staff and the premises contributed to an excellent relaxed evening. In South Oxfordshire you can go to some pub / restaurants and pay a fortune for a disappointing evening. Here you pay a reasonable price for excellent food, good surroundings, and attentive staff.

The Amuse Bouche in the form of a lemon sorbet between courses was a very nice touch but I did notice that a lot of the diners - some of us included thought this was a free desert so didn't go on to order some of the excellent puddings that The Old Fisherman had to offer.

Well worth a visit - as for anonymous below, I suggest you try it again, trust me you will not be disappointed!

Great on a hot summers day sitting in the garden, childrens play area, food served in baskets in the garden a bit 70 ish but good service would only use in the summer.

Please please please do not visit this pub. Never before have been somewhere that offers so little in the form of a meal and charges so much. An example - a warm goats cheese salad cost 11. All it consisted of was two pieces of goats cheese on a bed of wet, undressed lettuce. This was served in a weird plastic basket, presumably for the convenience of the staff? As i opted to eat outside (it was Summer) i was not offered the luxury of a plate, yet the price was exactly the same had i chosen to eat inside. I find it hard to believe why this place is so busy when all it clearly is is a harvester/beefeater eaterie. Actually i take that back - i am sure the beefeater/harvester offers so much more than this get-up. By all means come here for a meal if you have no tastebuds and don't mind being cheated
