user reviews of the Roebuck Inn, Wickham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We were staying at the local Caravan Club and were a bit confused on reading ken bishop's latest comment. The comments book on local restaurants back at the park had nothing but glowing comments on The Roebuck and then we noticed his remarks on here and very nearly didn't bother to go along. I am so pleased we ignored his remarks. The Roebuck was all the other 17 people said it was - A warm and friendly welcome., amazing food, (try the fillet steak, it's out of this world) and very friendly and attentive service. Yes, the drinks aren't dirt cheap, but I don't think they were at all excessive. We paid 4.95 for a large (and I mean very large) glass of Merlot and 3.45 (not 3.95) for a pint of Strongbow. We travel a lot and I think the last reviewer forgets that prices in Somerset are always going to be cheaper than prices in Hampshire. It's a fact! Give The Roebuck a try. We're very pleased that we did and will be returning when we come back next month.

I walked through the woods from the Caravan Club site looking forward to a pint. I have previously walked to Wickham Square via the old railway line, which takes about 45 mins. This walk was on a hot day and only took 25 mins. There was no real ale, the only drink resembling a beer was a gassed tiddly tap London Pride. NO THANK YOU, so I settled for a pint of Strongbow. I was charged 3.95, yes 3.95 for this mediocre cider. Needless to say I only had the one and left.
My impression was an untidy place in need of a good spring clean with greedy ownership. I paid only 3.10 for a superior cider (Thatchers Gold) in a country pub in Somerset a few days before.
I will walk the extra distance to the Square on my next visit to the area.

Went for a roast dinner this Sunday lovely meat and veg. The best bit was they do lots of special offers so check local papers. We did and got BOGOF. Two very generous roasts for 8.95. Can't ask for more than that. Very friendly waitress's.
Good value shows because it was busy.
Don't understand previous comments nearly put us off glad we went and will return.
Would recommend 8/10.

Four of us visited this pub for the first time on the 7th of June. We received a warm friendly welcome, the food was excellent, puddings were delicous. All of us are very much looking forward to our next visit.

Following a strong recommendation 4 of us went here for lunch today. We received a warm welcome, courteous and efficient service, and were served the most wonderful meal. We all had different main courses and were each delighted with the ingredients, cooking, and generous portions - the same must be said for the desserts. We highly recommend the Roebuck Inn, and are greatly looking forward to our next meal there.

Had Sunday lunch here and it was really really good. The beef was cooked to perfection as were the veg and the roasties. The staff were attentive and the atmosphere very welcoming. Will definitely be back to try the Fine Dining menu. The table next to us chose off that menu and that too looked amazing. Well done all.

We went, we ate, we left.

Menu had the aspiration of "ambitious", but the food delivered failed to achieve. The bread and butter pudding was awful.

Service was good.

Atmosphere was a little cliquey, decor was a little tasteless, and cluttered.

Overall 3/10 there is much better within 5Km.

Hello Mark,

I have cut and pasted the above onto the site you mentioned. I hope this is OK!

Well what can I say?

Staring with the venue, The Roebuck is simply the best restaurant you can find! It is tastefully decorated and the blend of curios around the restaurant is thoroughly entertaining.

Even the loos are perfect.

The food and ales are simply the best in Hampshire, no let me correct that! They are the best in the South of England.

Mark and his team combine to produce THE VERY BEST evening you will ever enjoy in your ENTIRE life!

So in short The Ruebuck is the best place you will ever find!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please do not go there I'd hate it if I could not get in!

Hi everybody, My name is Mark and I'm the landlord of The Roebuck. After seeing several nasty and inaccurate comments posted on this site it has become necessary for me to register with this site myself even if it is only to put the records straight myself.

Yes, lollogobb, do please let us look at the facts:

Firstly, Where exactly have we put up a sign inviting comments to this site? There is nothing here and I have never, or would ever do something like that. In fact, after some investigations earlier this year from the organisers of this site it became apparent that the same email address was using different login names to post nasty comments which were eventually removed by this site. I even asked for The Roebuck to be taken OFF this site. When something like this happens then it CAN be thought of as a hate campaign.

Secondly, everybody is entitled to their opinion although I would rather it be accurate and a little less personal.

Thirdly, Crustacean says they were here on New Year's Day. That is an out and out lie as there were no parties of 5/6 here that day.

I could go on but I would much rather just say that the facts speak for themselves. Yes, we are quirky. Yes, we are cozy. But all these things is what makes us different. We won't be to everybody's taste but as someone once said, "You can't please all of the people all of the time"

You will all, however, be assured of a friendly welcome, good food and a pleasant atmosphere.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and once again come and see for yourselves and make up your own opinion.

Best wishes,

Mark x

Excellent! Thoroughly enjoyable and a great environment.

At the risk of "Larryfareham" having a hissy fit lets look at the facts.

This establishment has recently put up a sign inviting comments on this site, so guess what? A very small minority of their clientele made a comment! Is that REALLY a "hate campaign"?

The facts are that its not that good.

Bleating about IP Addresses, email addresses and "Chamber of Trade and Commerce" doesn't mean a damn thing about the quality of this establishment (you would need a Court Order from a Judge to get that information - that is the UK law).

My view - stuffy attitude, average food, inflated egos. 4/10. I would not recommend or return
lollogobb - 20 Jan 2012 00:15
I visit occasionally.
It is a little quirky, so probably not to every-one's taste.
But it is convenient, as I can walk there and the food standard is adequate
GlashFordon - 18 Jan 2012 22:14
I think it's a little odd that these last couple of reviews have been written by someone who has reviewed only The Roebuck and all roughly around the same time. I've told the landlord and he's going to get in touch with the Chamber of Trade and Commerce who say they will check the IP address and email addresses and will take the appropriate action if there is a connection. It looks like this pub is the subject of a hate campaign and I would urge anybody to take with a pinch of salt any negative reviews they see until they have at least tried the place themselves. Such a shame.......
Larryfareham - 15 Jan 2012 19:34
I drive past this place every day. We tried it last Summer.

It was awful.
Lumpkin - 8 Jan 2012 23:21
Like "Larryfareham" I too was at the Roebuck on New Year's Day with a party of 5 other guests who I'd promised a great experience.

Sadly we were directed to a damp cold corner, and were subjected to indifferent service from the point we arrived.

It is good to know that this place is capable of providing a good experience. It is rubbish that we went out of our way to get it, and failed to see it.
Crustacean - 7 Jan 2012 00:38
Took my family to The Roebuck for lunch on New Year's Day. WONDERFUL. I have to admit to being a little worried after reading the previous review, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. I think the last reviewer must have either gone somewhere else, been rude themselves (this seems the most likely), or is a local competitor. We were welcomed most heartily at the entrance and shown to our table. The drinks were fairly average in price, nothing particularly expensive and the London Pride was perfect. The food was out of this world. I'm getting hungry now just thinking about it. Perfectly cooked steaks - 4 on our table all cooked differently. Homemade pies the best I've ever seen and the sweets were a triumph. Very attentive and friendly service - and we were not "known" but this didn't seem to matter as we were all very well looked after. I often use sites such as this to decide where to go out to dine but I've learnt not to take too seriously a clearly "nasty" review. I think I'm right in saying that The Roebuck is privately owned, as opposed to a chain, and as those type of places are very few and far between these days it is such a shame that some people are intent on seeing them fail. Support the small guys, I say. I hope that after reading my epic you'll at least give them a try - I did and I'm so pleased I did. We'll be going back......SOON

My partner and I have just been invited to the "Elvis and Neil Diamond Tribute" at this venue "Inn" in January.

It reminded us of the absolutely ghastly experience we had last time we visited this place, three months ago, and so we declined.

Poor food, over-priced, tacky decor, apalling management attitude, saved only by the waiting staff.

The 4 out of 10 mentioned by a previous review would have been nice. 2 out of 10 would be closer for us
Robbie43 - 29 Dec 2011 00:19
Not much to say. Food was adequate, really nothing special. We have eaten far better for the same cost and less, and equally adequate for the same cost.

The place is a little quirky with its "this is not a pub" attitude, and them and us / preference for regulars.

Would we recommend it to the point of saying "you must try it"? Answer is no. Assuming average is 5 out of 10 we give this 4.
BennyWaltham - 24 Dec 2011 21:13
Visited the pub for a meal (my understanding is that drinkers are not welcome?) and I can only say it was fine - not special but perfectly acceptable. prices no higher than elsewhere I don't think but the owners do seem to have their favourites. uhm.

I was in for lunch the day BOBSHOLL was in and we were sitting behind him. What a nasty, vile little portly bearded man he was too. I said to my wife I bet he's going to moan, and he did, And we just knew he'd be the sort to post something nasty on here. The truth of the matter is, and something he "forgot" to mention is his battered cod was absolutely fine. We watched him eat more than half of it and because it was such a large portion - something else he forgot to mention - he decided he'd have a moan. His poor wife is clearly used to his behaviour as she was obviously embarrassed and the waiter couldn't do enough for him and told him he'd taken the fish off the bill and offered him another dish at no extra charge when he was quite within his rights to have insisted he pay and was politeness itself and this is how that horrible man repays the actions of a polite and courteous waiter. I think it's appalling. Anybody reading this, please take no notice of this man. The Roebuck is my favourite place to eat. Yes it's not cheap, but the portions are HUGE. And do we really consider 10.50 expensive? Try them and see how much you get for your money.
timplumber - 11 Aug 2011 19:15
just had lunch at the Roebuck - apsolute rip-off

Had to send the cod & chips back - Fish VERY overcooked ( 10.50 for a frozen battered cod filet deep fried until too tough to eat!)

Wife's baked potato with cheese 6.95! and side salad another 3.95! 9.90!!!

Only saving grace was that her meal was OK.

Waiter tried to argue about the quality of the fish - didn't even look at it!

A Saturday night to Remember, What can i say and where do i start.....
The New Menu is to Die for. Something for everyone and every pocket.
Well done to the Chef's for another great night! and well done to Jess for here service, without here it wouldn't be the same. Keep up the good work all of you.

We were recently invited out for a meal, and when we found out where we read the reviews.

Our hearts sank......

However it was not as bad as we feared, not great either. Bread and butter pudding was truly awful, but the rest of the meal was acceptable for pub food, if a little over-priced.
SKPF - 21 Apr 2011 14:21
An early review said "could be good, but varies", and indeed that has been our experience.

We initially visited as guests of our friends who live locally and visit every few weeks. They were clearly recognised and our party was given good treatment on arrival, and during the meal. The restaurant was quiet and the service and food were quite acceptable.

Welcome - 4/5, Service 4/5, food 3.5/5

Subsequently we visited on our own a few weeks later. What a contrast! The restaurant was busy and through no fault of our own (accident on the M27) we were delayed by about 15 minutes.

Mark made sure (loudly) that we understood his displeasure on arrival, and frankly we felt the evening was off to a bad start. The service was slow although the food was still acceptable.

On that second occasion - Welcome - 0/5, Service 2/5, food 3.5/5

I can't help but think that people on "first name terms" with the management may well get (very) preferential treatment!

My wife and I regularly eat here wonderful food excellent menu available. Eight of us had a meal here and asked for a special dish (not on menu) it was absolutely brilliant. The chef did a wonderful job and the presentation was amazing. Nothing but highest praise for all involved.

Isnt it funny how most of the comments for various pubs and restaurants on this site are of the negative? We, as British people, LOVE to complain, and WILL take the trouble to write a bad review, but it isnt very often we take the trouble to praise, or write a GOOD one. I guess I understand why: weve all had what we consider a bad experience and it makes us angry, so we think about what we can do to get our own back. It makes us feel better, but it doesnt necessarily make a review accurate for EVERYBODY. If we have a good time we simply smile, go home and do nothing more.
I recently visited The Roebuck with my fiance and, initially, we just wanted a drink. The Landlord was welcoming and polite and went out of his way to find us a nice cosy table. In the end we decided to eat as the food going out looked so good, and we NOT disappointed. The night we were there there were lots of people just drinking, but in an area separate to the dining room so I would describe The Roebuck as both a restaurant AND a pub. The food was amazing and I dont think either the food or the drinks were particularly expensive. There must have been 50 people there last Friday and they all seemed to leave happy, so that must say something.........
I guess what I am trying to say is, read these reviews, but they are only a record of personal preference. I tried Greens, the other restaurant mentioned, and didnt like it, but thats not to say others wouldnt. Sometimes personalities can clash, but my Mother once told me to always treat people as you would like to be treated yourself and you wont go far wrong and that applies to EVERYBODY.
The Roebuck is a real gem and my fiance and I are taking both our families there to try their Sunday roast. Were really looking forward to it and who knows, we might even choose it as our wedding venue.

Poped into the Roebuck in wickham today after work with a few friends, We were greated at the door by a happy friendly waitress who showed us to a nice table as its table service only, The waitress explained that they operate as a restaurant, however we were still welcome to come in for a drink.
I was hungry and asked to see a menu, i was supprised at the choice, i ordered a starter, as did one of my friends. it arrived quickly considering how busy they were. overall experience was great, will be back for a proper meal with my husband.
tweedledee - 14 Oct 2010 21:53
I Visited The Roebuck on a Saturday Night where i was met by a happy and helpful waitress who showed us to our table, she returned with our drinks promptly and we ordered from there extensive menu. When the food arrived i was pleased with my choice, as so was everyone on our table, even my sister who is Gluten Intollerant, as she had her own menu to choose from.
The piano was a nice touch, Not intrusive, but just in the background.
All in all a great night out, reasonably priced with a high level of service.
Wasn't sure about going after reading these reviews, but though i would find out for myself. Glad i made the trip and will be returning again in the future.
ROADRUNNER69 - 14 Oct 2010 21:34
I have just noticed SamBora's review of this Pub/Restaurant and I cannot believe he/she is talking about the same place that my family and I have been frequenting on a regular basis since 2004.

I have never heard a bad word said about "The Roebuck". They have an amazing reputation and it is more than justified. It is not cheap, though (neither is it overpriced). I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for". If you want 2 meals for 5.00 then this is not the place to go (and something tells me that the very fact they mentioned the bill being inaccurate would suggest they may be more at home at a Weatherspoons!! Either that, or they were intent on complaining before they even left the house).

However, if you are looking for food cooked with the very best quality meat and accompanied by the freshest of local produce and served by the friendliest of staff, this is most definitely the place for you.

Give "The Roebuck" a try. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. And then you can decide for yourselves. Oh, and take no notice of what is clearly a review written by a very disgruntled individual who for one reason or another obviously had a personality clash and is clearly way out of their depth in such a classy and friendly establishment.
