Went for Sunday lunch. Very packed so obviously popular. Food was nice but was left a bit hungry - just one more spud please. Good pint of Harveys.
It's more of a restaurant really - we had to vacate our table once we had finished and all the tables in the very small bar were taken by diners so we had to adjourn to the nearby Royal Oak at Barcombe for a few more pints of Harveys.
There's quite a few good pubs around this area and this one is worth popping in to.

I'm certain that the Cock used to have a main road position, now it lays just off the road but in Winter/Autumn it can be seen from the road. We visited last week and found it to be outstandingly pretty, inside the usual pub/resteraunt balance was just in favour of the foodies. I ordered a pint of the local Hurst beer it was slightly worse than dreadful, I feared that the very young chap serving would argue the toss and give me the benefit of his six months drinking experience but no not a bit of it, he glanced ,sniffed ( damn vinegary stuff) and asked for my alternative choice ,Harvey's BB being the only other real ale so that was what I went for . A perfect pub for a date/ assignation, scenic, ultra smart and very quiet.9/10.A couple more beers if they had the trade would make it 10/10.

I may be wrong, but the Cock looks as if it used to be on the main road. If I'm right, the A road thankfully now bypasses the pub and the pub lies effectively up a dead-end lane, with a row of trees protecting it from the traffic. The pub itself is fairly old and has plenty of character. It seems to be popular with diners. We chose one of the tables at the front of the pub for a quiet drink. There is also a small garden to the side. The bar itself is fairly small. But I think there were other rooms. Service was friendly and beers on were Beachy Head South Downs Ale, Downland Day Tripper & Harveys Sussex Best Bitter. Was hoping they would have a real cider on. But the best on offer was the fizzy Stowford Press from Westons. Very nice pub.

One of those pubs that makes you feel better straight away, before you've even sipped your first pint of Harveys.

Very attractive and thriving village pub, attractive and multi-roomed, decent Harveys, pleasant staff. Best suited to diners though.

I love the Cock. Can't get enough of it. There is no better way to spend a weekend than gobbling down some sumptuous Cock delights. Boy is it hard to get to. But it sure is worth it when Harvey's sweet nectar is going down our throat.

Well the current management have maintained the excellent value, service, and quality of food & beer. Had probably best chicken & bacon Ceaser salad ever. Harveys was bright and refreshing. Perfic.

Another splendid lunch. What more can I say?

I haven't been to the Cock in absolutely years; always remembered it as a cosy, traditional country local and essentially it retains those importnat qualities today. It sits on a part of the old Uckfield Road bypassed some while ago, which arguably can cut off passing trade to a pub, but in this case it appears not to have done it any harm - quite the contrary in fact, now being set back from the din of the main road's traffic shielded by a thick screen of woodland, with a fair few customers still in situ even at 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon. Actually, on the subject of flora and fauna, the garden was looking splendid, and clearly has had much work done to it. This can only enhance the beautiful weather-boarded exterior, and the surroundings were glorious, especially on a day like yesterday.
3 cask ales were found, including the increasingly-ubiquitous but never-disappointing Dark Star Hophead (at 3), which proved hugely refreshing. A group of locals were sheltering from the still sweltering heat all enjoying a convivial chat and a pint; I imagine this would be even more of a prevalent sight in Winter months by the fireside. All very friendly and no perceivable antipathy towards non-regulars.
I observed the food menu, and there were many delights present which, had I not been expecting my Sunday roast later that evening, I would have been sorely tempted by. I can only trust that the positive comments about this aspect hold true. Worth remembering for possible future reference.

Clearly the Cock has followed the food and family-friendly route, which can be forgiven in the current climate where it is increasingly hard to survive on wet sales alone. Moreover, they seem to do what they do very well, and ultimately it remains able to please ale-lover and victual-seeker alike with no real prejudice.

Don't ever change!

We enjoyed a superb family meal at this pub recently. The menu is extensive, with something for all tastes and the waiting slaff were attentive and welcoming. I found the bar staff to be friendly and relaxed- just what you want in a family-run pub like this. Definitely worth a visit.

Fullers and Harveys, well kept by a Landlord that cares, together with an excellent selection of wines...terrific. And to add to these there's a super menu which we have worked our way through over the last few years. Never been disappointed.
Love it.

Bit puzzled by the previous comments. We have eaten regularly at the pub for some years and everyone who works there seem to be very pleasant and the food is good value for money. The pub is always busy so obviously a lot of other folk agree with this too.

One wonders what these knockers are out to achieve, or indeed what they are actually used to. If its the Ritz, or expensive restaurants and Gastro Pubs, this pub is probably not for them....but then give it a try and you might be pleasantly surprised!

I don't think the owners know whether to be publicans or restaurateurs. The bar is located at one end of the original building but the remainder is given over to the restaurant side. There is not a natural flow from bar to seating area and it all get's a bit messy and confusing. I don't think this is ideal for those who just want a drink. The owners seem very ill at ease and although polite it doesn't make for a relaxing experience. We have eaten there several times and the food is OK. It's got quite an extensive menu, probably too big and I think they are trying to do too much. The wine list is quite poor (don't know about the choice of beer). The location is very quiet and it has good outside eating with lots of tables and chairs. Whilst looking at the menu my view is that many dishes are over-priced for what they are. Not bad but not that good either.

Went to the cock for a roast yesterday and was not impressed at all. The meat is neither free range nor locally sourced and the vegetables had clearly been sat in a hot plate all day. The vegetables were overdone and bland. It had the look and feel of a very poor carvery. I certainly won't be eating there again.
LiveLewes - 18 May 2009 13:02
Went there for a drink a few months ago. The only place to sit if you're just having a drink is at the bar which is cramped and everyone leaned over us to order their food. Wouldn't bother to go back unless having a meal.
Nikkiginger - 17 Jul 2008 12:05
Re petergoesrock's comment, it is not a Harvey's pub, it is a free house which sells Harvey's. It more often than not has Fuller's London Pride as well, which you would never find in a Harvey's pub!

After a miserable week down in this part of the country, unrelated to pubs, the only redeeming features have been two good pubs, The Laughing Fish and a couple of miles away, this one, The Cock.

When you see that 'family run' actually means 'family run' then you even start to believe that cliches like 'home cooked' actually means 'home cooked' and while I might only have had the sausge and mash, it was good.

Sitting here at the bar the food side is clearly important, but haven't made the mistake of letting it make someone who just wants a pleasant beer feel out of place as so many (including one up the road) do.

A real credit to all in the family.

Well worth a visit. Although pretty busy on a Sunday, staff were instantly welcoming and service prompt, attentive and friendly. Food quality good. The general atmosphere of an olde-worlde country pub added to a relaxing and enjoyable meal.
wpchazel - 14 Jan 2008 17:57
This is a very lovely family run pub with excellent service. Its busy as its so nice but there is plenty of space so dont be afraid to look around for a table in the restaurant that seems to go on forever or in the cosy snug or the pretty garden.

Our food was wonderful, cannot fault anything!

Shuts at 3pm except Sundays so don't be caught out and miss out on a lovely meal!!

A very good Harveys pub. The beer was upto standard, the garden and bar were both attractive. The restaurant area was plainer, but with good company and good food that wasn't an issue.

Worth a visit.
petergoesrock - 3 Sep 2007 09:29
Its a nice place, but its not a pub. Its a country restauarant where you can get a beer. It does get very busy, so they must be doing something right, but I will wait until I get my pension book before making another visit.
flagship - 22 Aug 2007 14:25
The original part of the building (the bar area) is lovely, the rest of pub not so. The menu does indeed look very interesting but I have only drunk here. The beer is always in very good condition. There is real cider too.

Stopped for a loo break a while back and determined to pay a proper visit. Booked a table and got 'flu the day before. Finally made it last Saturday and it was worth the wait. Nice drop of Harveys and very good food. Bar area a bit cramped but the restaurant is light, airy and comfortable. Definitely coming back.
REVERENDBAZ - 6 Aug 2007 09:23
Lovely pub in a good setting - staff are very welcoming although it can get very busy so need to book at popular times.
The menu is very extensive and varied with lots of veggie choices.
I really liked my meal and would definitely go again and would recommend it to anyone else.
Beeza - 14 May 2007 19:44
Delightful place with extremely comprehensive menu - but it can get busy. Definitely one Jack and I would go back to.
mikeandjack - 23 Jul 2006 16:33
Went there for lunch at 12.30pm. Very picturesque setting, promising looking menu by the door.

Unfortunatly there was a very long queue just to give your order - and get a drink. Joined the queue. Then noticed lots of tables occupied by people with drinks, cutlery, but no food.

After ten minutes, in which the queue had not moved, nor had any waiters/waitresses appeared with food for the starving hordes at the tables, we cut our losses and left - to dine at a rival establishment (The Old Ship) about a mile further on.

A pity - it looked a very nice pub. A victim of its own success? A staff problem?

We will probably give them another chance - and turn up for lunch at 11.50 am - meanwhile would value other posters comments
