The Wilton Arms, Belmont

Some of the best pub food around and a fine selection of ales. The only fault I can find is that the ale is a bit pricey.

Bob's Smithy, Montserrat

Six reasonably priced ales including a few (Bank Top) locals. I have nothing bad to say about this pub except for the dcor - it should be cosy but it comes across as sterile.

The Hope and Anchor Inn, Bolton

Friendly little pub with a small selection of ale. It is a local, so best to avoid when the footbore is on.

The Jolly Ploughman, Bolton

Closed.

The Black Dog, Belmont

Nice pub, good beer and food. It is a shame however, that the food is accompanied with the hedge-wedge 'Rocket' salad that was popular in the 1990s.

The Belmont Bull, Belmont

Nice pub, good beer and food. It is a shame however, that the food is accompanied with the hedge-wedge 'Rocket' salad that was popular in the 1990s.

Baa Bar, Fallowfield

This is now called Baa Bar

The Manor, Toton

Well presented food for a pub, the price is reasonable too and there is a selection of real ales.

The Kings Arms, Bolton

One of the worse pubs I have been in.

The Finishers Arms, Bolton

Traditional pub with four real ales.

The Tempest Arms, Bolton

A little bit like 'The Slaughtered lamb' from An American Warewolf In London. Only less cosy.

Wainwrights Inn, Great Langdale

Terrible service!

They mixed our food order up and then blamed us for it, no apology when they realised it was their mistake.

This used to be a nice pub with lovely food. Not any more. Three of us left most of our food as it was sub standard and to put a final nail in the coffin they were charging extortionate amounts for the beer too.

We won't be going there again, The Sticklebarn Tavern up the road does marginally better food and the beer is cheeper too - no competition.

The Airport Pub, Manchester Airport

You have to pay to park in the pub car park.

The beer is over-priced*.

You have to mingle with the dregs of society - they have bouncers and high beer prices* to try and control them.

It is nice to watch the planes though and sometimes the plane spotters will let you listen to their radios.

If it wasn't for the aircraft viewing area, this pub would be one of those featured on a 'Britain's roughest pubs' type TV show.

The Barleycorn, Didsbury

Unfortunately this pub is closing for good on Sunday 31st Jan.

The structure is unsound so it is due to be demolished.

There are rumours that it will be replaced with flats.

Many happy memories.

The Stickle Barn Tavern, Great Langdale

By Cumbrian standards this pub is way overpriced.

The food is of the microwave standard you would expect in a 2 for a fiver pub but charged without the discount.

I wonder what percentage of the price of a pint goes towards fuelling the landlords Jag?

On a plus note, it is a great pub and, despite the prices, there is usually a good selection of quality beers.

The live entertainment is a valid reason for choosing this pub over one of the others in the valley, especially if Pete Lashley is performing.

The Wasdale Head Inn, Wasdale Head

The staff in this pub seem to think that they are kings of the valley and certainly treat visitors as their peasants. Although the home brewed beer is good, it is far too expensive and not worth the rudeness of the staff.

It is not unheard of that this pub shuts at 10pm on a Friday and Saturday if they have had enough food orders during the day.

The food is mediocre at best and way overpriced.

There are several (better) alternatives to this pub in Nether Wasdale and Gosforth.

I have visited the Wasdale Inn many times over the past few years in the hope of improvement. It is such a shame as the place has so much potential to be nice.

I now avoid it.

The Dandy Cock, Disley

Real fire, real beer. Don't need to say any more!

The Bowman, Hucknall

From the outside it looks like a nice place, once inside however, (especially on a Sunday) you are met with the type of atmosphere synonimous with 'Brewers Fayre' type pubs - everyone eating, kids throwing food everywhere and squaking to high heaven etc.

Make sure you use the two for one offer on food as it is only worth half the price, if that.

There is no excuse for poor food, especially in a pub that is based around food rather than beer.

Go there if:
You can't be bothered to cook and are in an even numbered party to take advantage of 'two for one'.

Go elswhere if:
You want real home coooked food and real ale in a traditional pub environment.

The Barleycorn, Didsbury

The Barleycorn now offers a selection of real ales.

Popular with students and locals alike, it did go downhill a year or so ago, but it has now been transformed into a friendly, welcoming pub with regular live Music and one of the cheapest pints around.

It is a shame however, that the pool table is so expensive.

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

The Bluebird ale is Excelent, and you can purchase a mini barrel of the stuff to take home with you. I ate there once and the food was ok but nothing to shout about. I will be going back there very soon - watch this space.
