Well it's not really a real ale pub but it's where the cool surf dudes hang out and that's not a criticism it's just not my cup of tea. It's also expensive, there was a report of Red Stripe at 3.30!! why would you pay that. The one real ale (Skinners) is usually poor quality, it's always busy though.

For an overview read RogerB from 10th April and my input really echoes all the others. This man really can brew, every time I go there whatever you have is not just good it is outstanding. The best pint I had all year was one of his brews... quite wonderful. I even like the fact that it can feel a bit empty..in that oldish style but friendly way.

I've got say one of my favourite pubs, Amanda and Richard make this place work really well. Richard is a chef by training and the food is by my measure some of the best in Cornwall. Beer is always excellent, the Otter is always excellent and is my normal choice when they have it. The wine again outstanding. It's only the location that keeps it quiet...One day the secret will be out.

The Driftwood Spars Hotel, St Agnes
I can never quite make my mind up about this place. The beer is usually now very good, except I have to say their own stuff, the principle for which I have nothing but praise, the execution I'm afraid lacks consistency and quality. It is often bland and compares poorly with Tribute. The food I never have, it's restaurant prices and I just won't pay this in any pub. It also feels a little bit grubby. After all that criticism however the staff and the beer (generally) are great...and that probably makes up for everything else.

The Travellers Rest, Bebington
One of my favourite pubs in the UK. Apart from Wetherspoons outfits it is one of the few pubs that is always busy in the evening. Usually a number of local 'micro brewery' real ales. It feels warm, friendly and very well run. The decor does feel a bit kitsch.. but so what

In the process of a revival, Ivor and partner have 'retro-d' the decor. It looks again like the local it always should have been. There's a real and caring approach to the wonderfully kept Abbot Ale and Doom Bar (which although local is not a favourite of mine)and a curiosity about alternatives. The only problem is the smoke due to the low ceilings, however come July 1, that goes away, and I would encourage anyone to make it a place to visit at least once if you're in the area.

The story is that this place has changed hands and the new management/owners take control at the end of the month. Shame, I know the owners could be a bit grumpy but they transformed what was a bit of a dive into a place with excellent food, very good entertainment and in the end reasonable real ale all with a no smoking area. All the current staff will apparently go.

The Railway Inn, St Agnes
New owners (since Dec 09). More of a buzz about the place and they've installed Sky sports, I know it's fashionable to denigrate this feature but it's sited sensitively and is a welcome addition to the village. I've always liked the Railway and think they will do well. Last time I was there, it was Abbot and Doom as the real ale standards.
