The Hawley Arms, Camden

Wouldn't piss on it if it were on fire.

The Edinburgh Cellars, Newington Green

Things are starting to look up @ The Edinburgh. Nice redec job, ales on tap (yet to sample), some groovy tunes, bitching cocktails (tho I don't really agree with locals and cocktails) and it seems the locals are returning. Will be roadtesting their Monday quiz next week, as the Shakespeare has decided to stop theirs while the Quizmaster is on the road with his band. I don't understand why Islington Council have such an issue with them...the pub has obviously improved since the bad old days, yet they have to pull the punters inside at ten pm!

The Prince George, Hackney

So the pints have gone down in price at The Salisbury? Funny, they seem to have risen at least ten pence at The Shakespeare and The Prince George. Apparently custom is down on Green Lanes, so drinkers in Stokey and Hackney get to subsidise the non-performer. Two pounds ninety five for a pint of London Pride in N16 is a bit of a premium for pubs that haven't seen any real maintenance for quite some time.
Time to consider some other options?

The Narrow Street Pub & Dining Room, Limehouse

We were there on the day of the London Marathon. Lots of lagers. Dissapointing and unimaginative two ales on tap (Pride and Deucar's), and the Meantime Wheat Beer was only available out of the bottle. Drinks were served in plastic pint glasses, which is an instant turnoff, but I guess that was just the nature of Marathon Day. Menu looked OK, and prices seemed fine, but as you can only eat in the restaurant or the upstairs private room, we didn't get a guernsey. To rub salt into that wound, whilst a friend was up getting a round in, a waiter came and tried to swap his chair for a stool. When challenged, he replied "the chairs are needed for the restauarant". After brief verbal altercation, the situation was remedied in our favour. We were, after all spending money in the pub, and bar or restaurant, one would think that a customer is a customer.

N2O, Soho

Pub closed, now a Jerk Chicken bar.

The Crown And Two Chairmen, Soho

Characterless, crowded, smoky, slow service, bad beer, expensive. Drank there semi-regularly before latest refurb, but those days long over. I agree with Stonch, go to The Dog & Duck.

The Salisbury, Harringay

Hmmm, The Shakespeare, The Prince George, The Salisbury...all similar comments:

Positive: Great jukeboxes and pub grub.

Negative: Beer too expensive, not great...lager cheap n czech, yet sold at West End prices.

Lack of maintenance and/or cleanliness

In short, pubs past their prime....what could the link be, Holmes?

Centuria, Canonbury

Landlord formerly of Monmartre of Essex Road (Now a Japanese noodle bar). Usually quite good for food, however last time we went, was dissapointed mainly with quaslity of ingredients (cheapo sausages) and wobbly table. Not really a beer drinkers' pub, with unused handpumps and some weird Adnams lager thing on keg. Will go back, as I'm sure last Sunday was just an aberration.

The Steam Passage, Islington

Absolute shocker. Waited at the bar for ten minutes with no service and four behind the bar. Even resorted to O'Neill's up the road. Avoid like the plague.

The Edinburgh Cellars, Newington Green

....And some decent ales please. Guests if possible!

The Rose and Crown, Elham

Nice pub with an interesting history in a quaint village with good beer. Ordered the Sunday roast, which was OK (rather than outstanding). Service was inattentive at best, ignorant at worst. Had to ask for condiments four times before I got them (by which time, of course, had just about finished eating). Then we asked for the bill. Ten minutes afterwards we got up to pay at the bar, as the waitress who was meant to bring the bill was chatting. The landlord blocked our way, which I felt was a "don't do a runner" kind of move. We paid, left no tip and walked out. A shame, as the pub has a genuinely good feel.

The Slug and Lettuce, Soho

***PUB CLOSED***

Unfortunately, not forever. Renovation job, so the next anonymous, character-free incantation of the Soho branch of this nasty and expensive chain should be open and pouring bad pints of everything by about this time next week. If this is your regular, and you're looking for something to fill the void, TRY A REAL PUB. Oh that's right, the one opposite has closed to be turned into flats. The suburbanisation of W1 gallops ahead unchallenged.

The Old Ship, Hammersmith

Big pub on the river in Hammersmith with pretentious restauarant. Roast beef was too big and meat seemed to be of the laser cut slice variety.

2 Oct 2006 12:59

The Grasshopper on the Green, Westerham

Went there for lunch on Saturday after a visit to Mr Churchill's house. Nice pub with good ales and decent food. Roast Pork chop with new spuds & veges was a defo winner.

2 Oct 2006 12:07

The Prince Alfred, Maida Vale

Went there yesterday for a spot of lunch with some friends after a couple of visitis in times gone by. Pub seems to have changed hands. Full restauarant menu no longer available in the bar. I had roast pork, which was great (tho we had to ask for crackling), but so it should be at almost fourteen quid. Bangers & mash a dissapointment, mainly due to miniscule amount of mash. Only real ale is Young's. Staff friendly enough, but on a whole seems to have slipped somewhat.

2 Oct 2006 12:00

The Harrison, St Pancras / Kings Cross

Went there for a gig. Terribly slow and disorganised service, with different staff charging different drink prices. As for the food, a flat piece of pastry on top of your (factory sliced) roast beef is NOT a Yorkshire pudding.

19 Sep 2006 11:21

The Red Lion, Soho

Pub closed 11.9.2006. Same day as the Intrepid Fox. Same purpose, conversion to flats :(

14 Sep 2006 14:56

The Old Fitzroy Hotel, Woolloomooloo

Decent pub. Top Laksa.

15 Aug 2006 16:41

Shaker and Company, Euston

Yeah, not much else around. Cramped and loud. No real ale. Decent happy hour I guess.

15 Aug 2006 16:34

The Queens Head and Artichoke, Regents Park

Nice pub, terrible service. I saw one of the staff making a lager top, with 75% lemonade, then asking how you made a shot of vodka. Took me fifteen minutes to get served with four staff behind the bar. Pretentious.

15 Aug 2006 16:32

The Duke of Argyll, Soho

The Duke is back, alive and kicking. Closed for just over a week for a bit of a spit n polish (and new urinals...the swamp has gone!).

19 May 2006 14:03

The Duke of Cambridge, Islington

Was there last Friday night for a bite to eat. Almost seventeen quid for roast lamb, so rare it was still baahing. As per katiep's review, the meal consisted of a few slices of meat, some spinach and about five half pieces of new potato. I agree with paying a bit of a surcharge for organic stuff, but this is taking the piss. My pint of Eco Warrior wasn't at it's peak either. Avoid at all costs. This place certainly ain't a local boozer.

2 May 2006 11:27

Shakespeare, Stoke Newington

A pint of Guinness is now 3.05 at the Shakespeare. Is N16 the new W1? Fair crack of the whip.

11 Apr 2006 16:53

The Edinburgh Cellars, Newington Green

North London pub. Loads of potential, but currently quite dodgy. Boxing gym on top floor. Back room dark and dingy, couple of pool tables. Sometimes there's Deuchar's behind the bar. The Thai food is excellent. Kitchen hours can be quite erratic though.

4 Apr 2006 17:27

The Lyric, Soho

Pub closed down Saturday 25 February. Unsure if it will be re-opened.

27 Feb 2006 12:32

Booth's Cafe Bar, Stoke Newington

Nothing wrong with Budvar on tap. Pizzas pretty reasonable as well.

20 Oct 2005 16:53

Shakespeare, Stoke Newington

Good fun, decent beers (though lines could be cleaned more often). Quiz night can be busy and with a decent jackpot. My favourite Stokey local.

20 Oct 2005 16:31

Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

Good for the end of a bleary one.

20 Oct 2005 16:26

Auld Shillelagh, Stoke Newington

Excellent Guinness, and Friday nights with The Other Brothers are a top craic.

20 Oct 2005 16:23

The Blue Posts, Soho

Pretty good. The corner outside is one of the better people watching spots of Soho. Drinks average price for the area, and usually decently kept ale. A good place to sneak off to from the office for a quiet snifter. Landlord can be surly.

20 Oct 2005 16:19

The Slug and Lettuce, Soho

A sad excuse for a pub. Expensive drinks, boring and overpriced food, and terrible, inexperienced service. Not that I blame the staff, its more the fact that the company that owns Slug and Lettuce establishments would shut it down and turn it into a shoe store tomorrow if it gave a better return on shareholder's funds, which wouldn't be hard as the parent company is now either broke or very close to it. Avoid at all costs.

20 Oct 2005 16:14

The Glasshouse Stores, Piccadilly Circus

Nice Victorian number in the heart of Soho. Bit of a rabbits warren. Sam Smith's, so cheap as you like, but doesn't beat the nearby Duke of Argyll for friendly staff.

20 Oct 2005 16:04

The Lyric, Soho

Pool table upstairs (blokes note: don't use the single female toilet on the top floor, trudge down to the basement unless you want to get kicked out by the sour landlord), decent Guinness. That's about it really.

20 Oct 2005 16:01

The Duke of Argyll, Soho

The DOA rules the roost in Soho. As in all Sam Smith's, its cheap drinks, no branded products except for the crisps, friendly management and staff, as well as a nice open main room.

No music is a bit of a weird policy I must admit.
