The Who'd Have Thought It, Milton Combe

Last year had a chicken curry here...but no chicken just vegetables and a little cut up sausagey thing as meat, but at least they did not charge for my meal.Been visiting for over 35 years ,missed the young couple that ran it who had recently left and had been serving excellent fare.

The Rising Sun, Epsom

As Youngs ales are no longer very good and are fairly generic , I drink the guest ales, but every visit recently (three times) the beer runs out and my group of friends are left literally stumped as to what to drink. Seems as though no thought gone into having a barrel ready to be tapped ,isn't that what used to happen?
Probably too intent on being arestaurant feeding the punters rather than being a pub that serves beer.

The Woodman, Ashtead

Up until recently good but Landlady left having increased trade and beer choice dramatically. Rapid downhill travel due to recent atrocious management.

The Cock Inn, Headley

Well, the Pub is now renamed "Headley Hills" shame as it will always be known as "The Cock" locally, a historic local hostelry. I rang and asked what ales were on, and all I got was was a "I think Tribute... nobody here knows what other beers are available" . So I think I will not be attending ,As all the gloss on the web site is about expensive food and wine, I presume the place is a restaurant now not a Pub.

The Ladas, Epsom

Mad Goose to die for

The Kings Arms, Epsom

No Improvement

The Brewery Inn, Ashtead

Maybe three ales usually on offer (one last time !),...but none from any of our local breweries...why do we have to drink ale from Barnsley and "upth north "when we have award winning local breweries ( and I certainly do not consider Youngs/Courage or even Fullers as local). What is it with ember inns?

16 Jan 2011 21:53

The Jolly Farmer, Bramley

Drank here before Christmas with large group of beer drinkers, spent the evening trying to find a "Real Ale " that we could enjoy- this was not necessarily the pubs fault. Just because its "Real Ale" does not mean its good ale ,and nowadays there is more and more poor ale !

16 Jan 2011 21:46

The Running Horse, Leatherhead

I'm sorry,it may be the " best" pub in Leatherhead, but if the locals sit along the bar ,the tatted barman never looks beyond that first row,and the barlady is serving a chap who seems to be unsure of what drinks and food his tribe wants...whilst the landlord is more interested in the newspaper article about his pub than serving ...after 5 minutes of NO SERVICE ...I WALK OUT .

The White Horse, Epsom

Who diss Missywissy

Certainly having a pint or twenty, but sadly not in this establishment.Agreed

The Driftwood Spars Hotel, St Agnes

Visited this pub in February one lunchtime, the local homebrew was excellent...would have spent the afternoon here ,but moved on eventually by my wife! Bar food was good ,and both staff and customers extremely friendly...a good experience.

The Boaters Inn, Kingston Upon Thames

The previous comments say it all, very pleasant position, excellent ales ,good recent find

13 Apr 2010 11:09

The White Horse, Epsom

Can it be true ,the grapevine says 5.....yes 5 managers in 8 weeks! newest incumbants sleeping on matress in bar at night ! Wow the new owners sure are WORKING OVERTIME to fail, should be a law against engineering of situation to ease planning applications,RECKON SIX MONTHS AND APPLICATIONS WILL BE IN COUNCIL CHAMBERS FOR SOME NEW FLATS ON THE SITE - SHAME ON THE COUNCIL IF THEY ALLOW SUCH BLATANT RACHMANISM.

Ye Olde Kings Head, Epsom

Comment on review below - Obviously devine intervention from across the road.

18 Mar 2010 22:32

Ye Olde Kings Head, Epsom

Definitely a "locals" pub.god selction of ales ,but a little pricey at 3.20 a pint for Harveys.

18 Mar 2010 22:29

The Ladas, Epsom

This was my Fathers local 40 years ago,a swish gin and tonic saloon and a stable lads public bar. In the late '70's I remember seeing Alan Minter park up his Bentley and pop in ...but over the last few years it became a sad watering hole full of ullage.
NOW ALL CHANGE......
Stuart and Gemma have taken the pump in hand and I am sure that their vim and vigour will transform the place.I wish them good luck with their new home,...and my "new " Local. Cheers !!
P.S. the Purity Ales Mad Goose is on excellent form

18 Mar 2010 22:23

The White Horse, Epsom

I cannot believe how quickly a pub can change. Boring dullard behind the bar ,a bar which is now stocked with run of the mill boring ales, therefore absolutely no point in visiting.
Can only think that current owners are deliberately running the Pub down to enable easing of planning aplications in the future for some nice flats !

18 Mar 2010 22:05

The Red Cross Inn, Reigate

How can you run a Pub that as your customers walk in you say "Sorry we have no draught ale ,only larger,we've run out !" I was looking forward to a pint of the amazing Pilgrim brewery's foaming ale...not to be.

5 Feb 2010 12:52

The Blue Anchor, Reigate

Well, when visited the place was full, but the beer ..urgh. It took them three attempts to provide a pint ,as the first two (different local ales) were ends of the barrel and cloudy and third was poor due to pipes not clean. I was in the company of a beer brewer and he was not complimentary about this.

5 Feb 2010 12:48

The Black Horse, Reigate

Visited a few times over Xmas,New Year and had amazing Porter from the Pilgrim brewery. Nice place, although a little pricey ! seems to divide into large food trade and locals with dogs around the bar.Menu reads well but I did not eat here.

5 Feb 2010 12:39

The Kings Arms, Epsom

Goodish beer maybe, but at the prices we were charged our group left after a couple of pints ! too expensive and not worth the walk from the centre of Epsom .Youngs seem to be determined to loose ale sales by pricing too high in their own pubs, bought a similar Youngs pint locally for 91p cheaper ! that's a lot of difference when buying a rounds, and I'm a Youngs shareholder !

5 Feb 2010 12:32

The Star, Dorking

Cracking Pub,interesting...mmmmm. Only problem is its Green King ales ..bland; but heyho .....I enjoyed the retro feel of several Camparis mit soda.

17 Aug 2009 22:20

The Woodman, Ashtead

Last reviewer can't spell or get his punctuation marks right!!

17 Aug 2009 22:14

The Woodman, Ashtead

Loads of lager, tons of Ale... but not one worth drinking. Why can't they put some nice independent local award winning ales on ,instead of bland national offerings, and its still a lengthy process getting served....nearly walked out last time I visited... I just can't waste my life away waiting for the one barman to say to the asembled queue "who's next? .....!**!

17 Aug 2009 22:11

The Prince Of Wales, Cheam

Very pleasant proper Pub; I had an excellent bright foaming pint (well! three actually!) of Pilgrim 's Progress and congratulated landlady on its condition. This is now my favoured pub in Cheam when in the area.Good for viewing Rugby internationals

17 Aug 2009 21:54

The Rising Sun, Epsom

This is a perfectly reasonable pub.I preferred the Dave Roberts days, with the quirkyness and wonderful beer choice, but to be fair the current encumbants do a good job for their customers given the Youngs dogma. The food seems good ,the garden is a treat, the staff are attentive -but the beer(ale) is served far TOO COLD ,even the Winter Warmer was at lager temperature,so warming ,NO. Also a little on the pricey side

17 Mar 2009 17:42

The Barley Mow, Epsom

Visited on Saturday 14th March and wholeheartedly agree with previous comments from insearchoftheperfectpint, but I didn't visit the garden. My clothes reek of cooking fat(their kitchen door is never closed)and Fullers seem to be churning out substandard beer(compared to the past),very hard to settle on anything to drink in bulk, ended up half and half LP/ESB ,but at least England beat France.

17 Mar 2009 17:26

The Marquis of Granby, Epsom

Good Pub.Only visited by me during the day when my age is acceptable! at night I am advised it turns into a beacon for young decerning embibers and the music goes up in volume; still, nice to see a Pub owned by a brewery create a character for itself .

20 Feb 2008 11:57

The Woodman, Ashtead

Big Bland Ember Inn no way to check prices , better beer and prices recently although I feel the only reason I visit is because I'm in company with sad gits who aspire to watch the young girls and remember their youth. There is an amazing phenomenon ,whereby as you approach the bar to buy a round ,the abundant staff disappear, that could be my charisma!,certainly NOT the Pubs

20 Feb 2008 11:49

The Plough & Attic Rooms, Rusper

Just about got the mix between Restaurant and pub right.Visited lunchtime recently, good food and reasonable beer.

20 Feb 2008 11:33

The Nutley Hall, Reigate

A proper local, good ale.

20 Feb 2008 11:30

The Blue Anchor, Reigate

Good view of Cricket in Summer, poor beer,no customers lunchtime weekdays, dead.

20 Feb 2008 11:27

The Elephants Nest, Horndon

Ummm...,agree that Landlord seems a little overbearing and rude.Feel it has lost the spirit, and now wants to sell upmarket tosh at upmarket prices, but you cant deny the food is pretty good, but it is really a Restaurant, and this site is for PUBS

20 Feb 2008 11:21

The Trout and Tipple, Tavistock

Camra pub, good ales but a draught cider we had was vinegar, Landlady said it was as normal, but did replace.Dog friendly-loved the sausage.Closes 2.30 pm weekdays on the DOT.

20 Feb 2008 11:14

The George Hotel, Castle Cary

Bar Area.. Nice local feel with good selection of ales.Very good Sunday Roast in the bar, at reasonable price.

20 Feb 2008 11:10

The Sparkford Inn, Sparkford

OK ,so this is a Sunday Roast Pub..very good.. but empty in the pub/Bar area,NO Dogs.

20 Feb 2008 11:06

The Who'd Have Thought It, Milton Combe

I have ben visiting this Pub on and off for 30 years and wholeheartedly endorse the previous comment.A friendly reception by the young owners, dogs allowed in and a fabulous local community feling .During last weeks holiday in Devon my wife and I visited three times for excellent food and ale.You lucky lucky locals !

20 Feb 2008 11:02

The Dartmoor Inn At Lydford., Lydford

A dining Pub sums it up precisely.Excellant food

20 Feb 2008 10:55

The Drake Manor Inn, Buckland Monachorum

Nice Pub in beautiful Village.Reasonable food and good ales.

20 Feb 2008 10:50

The Cobweb Inn, Boscastle

In Cornwall

Lovely Pub,good food and ales, bags of atmosphere-but takes a little time for your eyes to adjust to the lighting level!Very enjoyable experience

20 Feb 2008 10:46

The White Horse, Epsom

Finally a welcoming Pub with a community spirit. Bags( or barrels!) of lovely ales to fill the gap in Epsom left by the demise of "the Riser".Now four real ales and moving up,plus foreign bottles and draft.Food good ,and all very reasonably priced. Please dont become too popular!More power to the elbow.

20 Feb 2008 10:37

The Rising Sun, Epsom

Its all coming home to roost, not 18 months since Youngs & Co ,sorry ," a Bedfordshire brewery" took over ; we have an arrogant bar manager, euro bar staff with no Knowledge of beer, and and empty space in our lives and Epsom, filled with a Bistro.I said it would happen.Oh how I miss those wonderful beery days of yore.
Still "The White Horse" still seems to grow in locals eyes and is best Pub in Epsom on BITE scoring.

19 Feb 2008 11:24

The Rising Sun, Epsom

Pubs moved on, so have I

22 Nov 2007 10:11

The Albion, Epsom

Last time I visited it had virtually run out of bitter ,how can this happen, dead as a doornail.

22 Nov 2007 10:08

The Cock Inn, Headley

Nice setting, good food and excellent Harveys Sussex ale.Decor a little bland and unfortunately chainpubbish, but as long as the Sussex is on(wasn't on fairly recent visit) who cares !!

1 Jan 2007 18:09

Rubbing House, Epsom Downs

This place really is not a Pub but a restaurant. The food is however good ,and the place is always full of happy eaters. However if you want a quiet place to go after a walk with the dog this is not the place; in fact its not really suitable as a drinking venue ,as they seem a little awkward with customers who stand at the bar to drink .

1 Jan 2007 18:02

The Railway Guard, Epsom

Now the Rising Sun around the corner is an expensive soleless chain pub this oasis for ale and rugby fits the bill on match days.

1 Jan 2007 17:46

The Jolly Coopers, Epsom

An excellent proper pub, with two bars and a snug.A real friendly local with friendly locals!! Harveys Sussex, and Seven Hills Shere Drop make this a gem of a place for a good ale.,and they put cheese ,bicuits, wallies and pickled onions on the bar Sundays!Thank Heavens that pubs like this still exist as a contrast to the ghastly soleless dross of themed pubs that pubcos continually refurbish

1 Jan 2007 17:39

The Amato, Epsom

A good local, shame about the abundance of smoke ,or I would be here more often.Harveys always on excellent form .A little too soccer orientated but hey-ho!!

1 Jan 2007 17:27

The Rising Sun, Epsom

Oh dear ! We have got ourselves in a twist. 'Anon 'had it right on opening day. Since then we have had the landlord ,or his lackies( Medallion man and co.), writing two rather obvious "positive" reviews;and in the meantime the prices have gone up again! Having now visited several times I can definitively say the following:- This is a soleless ,overbright ,expensive gin palace .Lacking any character whatsoever. The staff are so regimented, they seem to fear to be seen talking to the customers ; perhaps a little bonhommie would help ! Still the 'Youngs' is not right right ,but that may be down to the brewing in Bedford ? Ordinary used to be a pale light bitter but now it seems to be a run of the mill browny amber beverage.ON a positive note the food reads and looks good.Perhaps the only way forward is for this once great pub to give up being a pub and become the First Youngs Gastro/Foody sort of place ( but I don't think Youngs can do that- too short sighted )"We'll just keep Jacking the prices up until we are on the full rent" and then go.
