The Golden Egg, Kilburn

What's to complain about? Guinness 2.25 a pint, food cheap and cheerful, sport on the televisions. The clientele seem a mixed bag in keeping with the area. If you like traditional pubs then worth a visit.

The Czech Bar, West Hampstead

If you don't know the area you may miss this place because it is basically a house with a bar in it; this would be a mistake as the Czech beer is excellent (served in the old-style, dimpled pint glasses you don't see these days) and the staff/owners are very friendly. (when we were in, one of the owners sat and spoke with us, out in the little beer garden.) Yes, the beer comes with a big head on it but this is an authentic Czech establishment so that's the way it should be - don't come here if you object to that. You probably wouldn't spend a whole evening here but is definitely worth popping in for a drink.

The Railway, West Hampstead

Recently visited the area and this bar became an adopted 'local' as it seemed to be the only traditional-style pub in the area (most of the others were full of too-cool-for-school city types). Make the effort and the staff are happy to chat - especially the young manageress, your typical chirpy cockney. Sure, some of the clientele are a bit rough and ready but as always, if you don't act like an arse you wont have any problems. Beer is good and very reasonably-priced, food seemed fine. If you're in the area and you prefer 'normal' pubs then the railway is definitely worth a visit.

The Kingdom, Kilburn

Having recently visited the Kilburn area was in this bar a few times and found the staff and customers very friendly. This is a real drinking mans (and womans) bar - act like a normal person and you'll be fine; act like a muppet and you'll find yourself in bother. There is nothing wrong in hanging on to your heritage (in this case Irish) and this is clearly what the staff and patrons are trying to do. These traditional pubs are dying out, especially in London, so hang on to them - once they're gone, they're gone for good. For anyone visiting the area i would say this pub is a must-visit

The Ten Bells, Shoreditch

When did filthy and grotty become trendy? I am a first-time visitor to this pub and having worked in the licensed trade for many years was shocked by its run-down condition. This pub needs a decent manager to run it - i was in on a Sunday afternoon and the staff were acting like they didn't want to be there. Pubs like this can be upgraded without losing its heritage. Hugely disappointed.

The Commercial Bar, Thurso

Along with Top Joes (a thirty-yard walk away), the Comm is one of the best, and busiest pubs in Thurso - a real drinkers bar. Recently been taken over by new owners who are carrying on the bar's fine traditions, such as its charity fund-raising. Definitely a must visit for anyone coming to Thurso.

Top Joes Bar, Thurso

Well run, family-owned pub right in the centre of town. It has always been the busiet bar in Thurso and this seems to still be the case. Staff are pretty outgoing, friendly and efficient (some staff have been here for years - always a good sign). Good selection of lagers, beers and cask ales (mostly locally brewed). Bar meals is the usual fare - not as good as it used to be but still ok. Good for watching sports (4 plasma screens). There is live music quite often at the weekends. Most bars in Thurso are pretty friendly (with one or two exceptions) and this is the same, frequented by a good mix of the local population.
