The Golden Egg, Kilburn

What's to complain about? Guinness 2.25 a pint, food cheap and cheerful, sport on the televisions. The clientele seem a mixed bag in keeping with the area. If you like traditional pubs then worth a visit.

The Czech Bar, West Hampstead

If you don't know the area you may miss this place because it is basically a house with a bar in it; this would be a mistake as the Czech beer is excellent (served in the old-style, dimpled pint glasses you don't see these days) and the staff/owners are very friendly. (when we were in, one of the owners sat and spoke with us, out in the little beer garden.) Yes, the beer comes with a big head on it but this is an authentic Czech establishment so that's the way it should be - don't come here if you object to that. You probably wouldn't spend a whole evening here but is definitely worth popping in for a drink.

The Railway, West Hampstead

Recently visited the area and this bar became an adopted 'local' as it seemed to be the only traditional-style pub in the area (most of the others were full of too-cool-for-school city types). Make the effort and the staff are happy to chat - especially the young manageress, your typical chirpy cockney. Sure, some of the clientele are a bit rough and ready but as always, if you don't act like an arse you wont have any problems. Beer is good and very reasonably-priced, food seemed fine. If you're in the area and you prefer 'normal' pubs then the railway is definitely worth a visit.
