Used to be a wonderful place some years ago. More recently i called in for one drink awaiting a ferry and met some colleagues who'd been in there a lot longer. They weren't impressed with the landlord so one or them repaid him by buying some pickled eggs from behind the bar and feeding them straight to the friendly bulldog. It loved them. Apparently bulldogs are renown for their smelly flatulence under normal circumstances. I'd hate to have been in there a couple of hours later when the pickled eggs were working their magic!

Went place for first time in ages and wondered what it's like these days. It used to be a nice pub. Glad i didn't call in - Just read in Wigan paper about a woman on 6.11.11 biting another woman's ear off !

The Dog and Partridge, Standish
Closed for good for turning into a gun shop. Shame really.

and besides i said 3.10, not 3.20. Try actually reading a post before spouting off. You clearly are the liar. I'll never forget that day as i'd never ever been charged over 3 for a pint of bitter in the north west.

HOW dare you call me a liar! I know this pub and surrounding area very well from the mid 1980's, e.g. The Saracen's head pub across the road long since demolished for the ring road, the white hart pub, the old ta centre, Billy Boston running the next pub down. I Got charged over 3 for first and last beer in the Bowling Green in early 2010 and you don't like it. Fine, but don't libel me about what was the truth. It is a shadow of its former self, and been through countless managers over the years.. Sorry if you don't like the truth that it was overpriced and empty on a Saturday evening - when at one time the place was buzzing at that time of day/week.

Drove past there the other day. It's totally bordered up with metal plates over the windows. I'm not surprised of its short life as a restaurant with it charging central London food prices, for what is just a renamed pub in a low populated area in Lancashire.

This has always been a great unspoilt pub with good staff. It is now probably often empty at the extortionate price of the cask. When asked for 3.10 in a wigan pub i thought i had misheard. Regret i won't be going back.

So looked forward to coming back here after 2 years away. Always used to be a favourite of mine for great cask ale. Bitter now not served direct from the (cask) barrell and wasn't good at all. At more than 3 for just a locally made bitter i felt completely ripped off. Very sad to say i won't be going back here any more.

Sir Thomas Gerard, Ashton In Makerfield
I've been going in here on and off since it first opened. After 6 months abroad went in August 10 on a quiet afternoon and was shocked to see the state of it now. I was instantly hit by a pungent smell (coming from black dirty carpets?) that made me feel sick and definately change my mind about eating there. Tables were sticky, stained and the whole place was tired and in need of at least a clean and most refurbishment. What a shame to see a once decent pub so neglected.

You go the Anvil for one thing, the consistently superb ale which just happens to also be reasonably priced. Working away for many weeks at a time i always call in here before my front door on the way home. Staff are polite and efficient. There isn't a lot to do in the pub so go elsewhere to play pool or blare pop music aloud. That's the magic of the place, it's a proper traditional pub that isn't spoilt. If you get hungry they have a few home made sandwhiches behind the bar to nibble on. Generally an older clientele which is relaxing with no children allowed. Gets busy at weekends but you can always find a seat. Only minus point is the toilets have been constantly underwater ever since the early 1990's when it was Riley's.

This is a totally different pub since it was closed and totally rebuilt inside. The best thing is the food that is reasonably priced with fair size portions, especially with the offers at non peak periods. The staff are friendly and it is no longer a cliquey place with miserable landlord that it was for many years. Not much choice on draught beers and no cask unfortunately. Definately the place in central standish to go for an informal meal with a pint.

This is the only pub for miles where you are overpowered by the smell of the toilets from far inside the pub. The bitter/lager/cider on draught is cheap to buy but vile to taste. Last time in there i had one pint of Guinness (which is virtually impossible to spoil?) and no other alcohol that day. I had vomited it back up by the time i'd walked the quarter mile home. Seats are tatty and full of holes. Avoid.

Despite once the best pub food in Standish it hasn't served food in quite a while now. Looking a bit tired lately with beer adequate but nothing special. Nice quiet place to read the paper during the day as its bright and you'll have about half the pub to yourself as virtually no-one goes in. Shame really

Went in for first time in 20 yrs (Dec 09). Seems recently totally refurbished & was very clean. Chap behind the bar was friendly and enthusiastic. Cask bitter was superb but was extremely expensive, so i won't be becoming a regular.

The Chainlocker and Shipwrights, Falmouth
This was a fine pub gone so downhill. The cask was eye-watering overpriced and it tasted like vinegar. My wife phoned. I told her how much i paid for the acetic acid whilst stood at the bar in full earshot of the barmaid. The barmaid looked embarrassed and ran off to the other side of the pub. Not good.
