The Windmill Tavern, Waterloo

From reading the reviews you'd think this was some insane sports bar - which i guess it may well be if the footy is on. But i went on a Friday night and it was nice to find a pub in this area that wasn't completely and utterly rammed. You could get served quickly at the bar by friendly bar staff.

Doom Bar on tap which tasted OK, not amazing.

Not a bad pub overall, although not quite as good as the Stage Door round the corner (although that pub is a little more brown / old man so maybe if you're on a date, go to the windmill, or a restaurant!).

The Prince of Teck, Earls Court

Ground floor bar has a big screen for the footy although bizarrely all the seats are spread out round the edges of the pub leaving a massive empty strip in front of the screen consisting of people getting in each other's way.

That said the beer was OK and the bar staff capable. Didn't stay too long after the footy but it is very convenient to Earls Court and a lot less pretentious than the Kings Head round the corner (which doesn't show the footy).

With a front door and a side door you'll be in a constant draft from smokers going in and out - a modern day hazard of the public house.

The Captain Cook, Putney

I went here last night for the quiz (starts 8pm ish not 9) and all the bar staff I spoke to were polite, didn't see any of the problems other users have reported. Bit rubbish on the ale front - just John Smiths, no real ales.

Had a good evening, the quizmaster is great, enthusiastic and it's all for charidy which is nice.

Also had some of the Thai food which was really good.

Seems a bit like a pub trying to be a restaurant which i really hate as it tends to kill the atmosphere but that aside i'd happily go back for the quiz night.

The Crooked Surgeon, Leicester Square

The Crooked Surgeon is just off Leicester Square so don't expect drinks to be cheap.

That aside it's a decent pub if you're in central London and want to watch the football.

If you don't want to watch the football then i suggest the Captains Cabin on Norris St just off Picadilly or one of the numerous Samuel Smith's pubs in Soho.

The Zetland Arms, South Kensington

Oh, just read the Hoegarden comment and laughed. Want decent foreign lager? Go to Belgium.

The Zetland Arms, South Kensington

A schizophrenic selection of reviews so far...

I visit this pub regularly so all my comments are from are number of nights. The fact they show the football is probably the main reason i come here, so many pubs round this area don't.

Ales on tap - i'd say these are working 70% of the time - i've got a dodgy pint on a single occasion but the bar staff happily replaced it.

I haven't noticed any dodgy smells apart from my own although i wouldn't say it's the prettiest interior, all the furnishing are 'well used' to say the least.

I've never had food here so can't comment. Bar staff sometimes encounter difficulty pouring Guinness so i can imagine food may be a skill step too far.

Meet someone for a quick pint out of the tube but if you fancy a sparkling evening in South Ken there are better (posher) pubs such as the Admiral Codrington.

Prince Of Wales, Putney

Met some friends here on a quiet Wednesday night and despite the nose bleed inducing high chairs everywhere i really enjoyed it.

Partly because they had Black Sheep on tap (yum) although suffering from that typical Southern 'no sparkler on end of tap' problem that leads to flat bitter.

Bar staff were lovely even asking me if I minded having my friend's Fosters served in a London Pride glass (obviously I demanded a discount for this shocking behaviour).

Worth a visit if you can get a seat, wouldn't like to go there on a busy night though.

The Stage Door, Waterloo

Went down here to watch the Liverpool / Marseille match after watching a film at the Imax. It's a nice little pub and sufficiently hidden away that it wassn't completely rammed like the pubs directly around Waterloo.

Also i went with my smoggie friend who has a special passion for this place as a Boro fan. Considering the amount of times Boro is on TV his visits are infrequent so was nice for him to get reacquainted!

ONE, Fulham

Nice little Fulham bar serving beer on tap and not at ludicrous prices. Good for a Friday night as they're open until 2am with a banging DJ, dare I say it maybe a better bet than Crazy Larrys?! Hmmm. That hot barmaid comment is true too...

The Square Pig, Holborn

I work just across the road from this pub and honestly don't think it's as bad as all these reviews make out. Yes the service leaves something to be desired and the clientele are mostly in suits (well you are in Holborn) but the food is great for lunch, particularly the burger.

We regularly have an after work pint in here and a good place to start before going on into the west end. I'm not saying it's the greatest pub in Holborn but there are far worse!

The Admiral Codrington, Brompton

Get's absolutely rammed on a Friday/Saturday evening. Not a bad pint though and if you can find anywhere to sit/stand then a good venue.

The huge trapdoor permanently open to the cellar does cause much amusement as drunken people on the way to the toilet trip over/into it.

The Queens Head, St Pancras

Nice little pub with really friendly bar staff and a good atmosphere. Has been revamped recently with some decent furniture. Good to go watch the footy or just an evening pint of ale. Irish coffee was good too!

The Page, Pimlico

I had some excellent Thai food here last night. Then stayed drinking for a couple of hours, the little atmosphere it has is quite pleasant...

The Mitre, Holland Park

I managed to confuse the bar staff by ordering some food, which incidentally is EXTREMELY expensive - 10.50 for a steak sandwich. All the bitter was off too. However the atmosphere and place is nice although quite empty and once the bar staff figured out how to place a food order they were very friendly.

The Lamb, Bloomsbury

It was relief to walk in here after the horror of being in the Perseverance across the road. Fantastic little beer garden out back, good beer and hard not to stay all night in the (early) summer...

The Perseverance, Holborn

Was in this pub last night. The pub is dominated by a bar on one side which it is near impossible to get served at even if it's not that busy. The bitter on tap is horrible. It reminds me of a bad student union but without the atmosphere. Go somewhere else...!

The Cross Keys, Chelsea

Not a bad little pub, nice comfy seats, good beer and an attached restaurant. Full of posh girls with dodgy hair on Saturday night though...

The Station Inn, Ribblehead

Perfect for a warming beverage / refreshing ale after Christmas sledging.

16 Feb 2006 14:33

The Wheatsheaf, Fulham

Not a bad pub for food and real ale. Quiz night on Thursday's is a good reason to go, the quizmaster has an impressively loud voice (the quiz is good too!).

The Square Pig, Holborn

My local after work pub and i haven't found better in Holborn. Good atmosphere, good food and you can stand outside in sun.

Taylors, Streatham

Good challenging quiz. Good for quiet drinks and less quite drinks. Huge fish tank too! - Ed

The Fly, Bloomsbury

I went to the Daily for a private party last week and it has a really nice downstairs bit that you can hire out - squishy sofas etc. It's quite cool and relaxed in there (almost European!) albeit a bit empty.
