You can't complain about the clientele - bearwood is a once cosmopolitan area hemmed in by the sons and daughters of the white working class. They almost certainly still live at home and have large disposable incomes. They ARE going to start fights, sing football songs, and drink lager. The Bear is surviving financially by opening its arms to these wonderful people every weekend. You can always try going in the week instead, where there are less of them about, but be prepared for the apathetic staff to be calling last orders at 10.45, turning on the lights and sighing loudly.

A large group of us went here on a Sunday lunchtime after a walk at Belas Knap. The Flowers was a nice pint, the homemade steak pie was one of the best I've ever had - and everyone was polite and accomodating, considering that ten adults and ten children covered in mud and had just walked through the door....excellent pub!

This pub is a rip off. I drank ten pints there last week, and when I woke up the next day I was still thirsty.

Atticus gives those of us Bearwood /Smethwick types who want to pretend we are upper middle class somewhere to drink expensive bottled beer and mingle with a clientele which we are conditioned to see as interesting. If you wanted to impress a date you could take them here. Stone floor tiles and leather chairs await you. Sits awkwardly in the middle of Bearwood, but at least its an option and the management are at least trying. They have performances at the weekend that I have yet to experience. Potentially this could be where Atticus descends into toss-dom, but I digress. In summary - one of the most expensive midweek hangovers I've ever had.

I nearly ran over a bloke walking out of this pub and straight into the road in front of my car. As he glared at me and began to shout drunken obscenities I recognised him as the man who had tried to steal my bicycle from outside the hardware shop weeks earlier. You probably won't like this pub.

Currently renamed the Seven Stars, this pub appears to be dominated by old Jamaican geezers making half pints of guinness last three hours. The atmosphere is generally relaxed and sometimes they play proper 60s reggae. The beer is ok. Being where it is there can be some hairy moments and I've seen it shut down early because the staff have been so shocked at the loons that wander in. Boy do they earn every penny of their wages.
If you are an old Jamaican geezer and it is too cold to sit in your allotment shed you could kill a few hours here.

The Wetherspoons chain decided to bring their wisdom to Cape Hill - cheap and pleasant drinking and eating experiences for an up and coming area. It actually worked for a few weeks - then things got steadily worse and they bailed out, leaving the locals to grind the pub into the gutter. There can be up to 40 nationalities in there at any one time, which means that, on the bright side, racist gangs dominating the pub is almost an impossibility. However everyone is mostly concerned with either smuggling shoplifted aldi brandy into their 99p pints or selling you meat they've nicked from Asda. Great if you want cheap undrinkable beer, men taking their shirts off and offering everyone out, blokes punching their wives in the face, and some cheap bacon.

I used this pub for a good 18 months for midweek drinks with pals as we had all ended up living in the area. It is very small but it feels like an old pub and you don't get that very often these days. The bar staff were always pleasant. The beer is ok. The locals never really warmed to us though, and they probably won't like you much either.

The Dog, Smethwick
Nice real ales on whenever I've been here. A bearable pub - it reeks of fakeness however. It also has a meat market theme at weekends.
