Disappointed. Firstly, no average Pino Grigio is worth 15.00 a bottle. Secondly, the meat in my cottage pie was flavoured with cinammon. Neither was a pleasant experience.

Nice pub, nice atmosphere and close to the seafront. Sadly food very average

Unfortunately more of a restaurant than a pub. We called in for a drink on Christmas Day lunchtime, but were refused because we were not dining there. Annoyingly there were no notices to this effect on the front door. Won't bother going back there again.

We went there yesterday for lunch before we set off for the Elton John Concert. We must have had our invisible heads on as it took ages to attract someone's attention. First of all the menu was limited. I ordered the Duck Pate to start as I don't like fish and the thought of eating raw steak (Steak Tartare) makes me feel quite ill. Sadly they'd sold out. So, no starter for me. I then had breast of corn fed chicken (must have been a very small chicken) on a bed of mash and crushed peas. Unfortunately that was no better and much smaller than I could have cooked at home. We should have known better really, we've eaten at the Ginger Fox at Albourne and were equally disappointed.

The Taw River Inn, Sticklepath
Had a pint in this pub on Sunday of last week after visiting The Finch Foundry opposite. Warm and welcoming pub and friendly staff. Food must be good as it was fully booked. Good beer and even better cider.

The Oxenham Arms Inn, South Zeal
Stopped off for a drink here one day last week. Young lady behind the bar took 10 minutes to work out how much a pint and a glass of wine cost and how much change to give me. We were going to eat here but the dinner menu was so expensive.

We have been staying in the village this past week and quickly found The Tors to be a welcoming and extremely friendly 'watering hole.' The landlord and landlady, Tony and Ann, are absolutely lovely so are all the staff (including Richard, a rich source of local knowledge). Excellent selection of beers and whiskies and an extensive menu (I'm still full from the mixed grill I had last evening!!) Lovely hotel, delicious food and very charming hosts.

We ate here last Saturday and we were singularly unimpressed. The pate was lovely but served with a baguette instead of toast. Our main courses were very unexciting and average. We eat better than this at home on a daily basis. Much against my better judgement I had the cheeseboard and I expected a selection of regional cheeses, needless to say I was disappointed. We won't be going again.

Had hoped for something special but came away disappointed. Limited menu and quite pricey. I had what ammounted to a posh steak and chips which cost 17.95 or thereabouts and was no different and no better than I can cook at home. I had hoped the cheese board would be a selection of Sussex cheeses, instead it comprised a piece of stilton, piece of goats cheese and a sliver of cheddar all for nearly six quid. Thank you, but no thankyou.

The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield
I posted a review in March 2009 and have visited The Jolly Tanners several times a month since then and my opinion hasn't changed. I have two friends, one lives in Thornton Heath and the other in Chipstead, both consider the distance worth it as the landlord is charming, the beer is excellent and the food is very enjoyable. As for the comment about Chris playing golf. Why shouldn't he? If he works in the pub at lunchtime and in the evening for 4-5 days a week, surely he's entitled to a few days off. As for Chris having a second job, he's training to be a special needs teacher which is most commendable. As for 'localer' he/she is not worth commenting on.

The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield
I don't know which pub bonmot went to on the 24th Jan, on a parallel world possibly. My friends and I have been there many times over the past three years, both lunchtimes and evenings. The food and service have been faultless, the landlord pleasant and helpful and the atmosphere friendly. As for the guest beers and ciders...the choice is often a difficult one (but good difficult, not bad difficult). My partner loves his real ale and when we come here he's in Heaven.

The Long Man of Wilmington, Patcham
We stopped going in there when the smoking ban came into place. Before that we drank there several times a week. I don't drink bitter or lager, just cider and Newcastle Brown. And the prices way back then were on the expensive side. I also agree that the manager could do with a course on Customer Service. Its a great pity there are no connecting doors between the 'public' bar, where the noisy oiks and chavs watch perpetual footie and play perpetual pool/snooker, and the 'saloon' bar. Now the spring is here I can sit in my lovely garden, enjoy my cigars and drink beer and wine at half the price.

This is now the Ginger Fox, part of the Gingerman Group. My partner took me there for a birthday treat last April and we were both really looking forward to it. What we found was disappointment. The dcor was cold an unattractive and the drinks were expensive. My main course was basically steak and chips, no roll and butter, no side dish, no salad, and no garnishes all for 16.50 (side dishes were an extra at 2.50 each). My partners duck portion was smaller than his chocolate dessert and our coffee was so strong it was barely drinkable. We came away very disappointed, drove home and had a sandwich.

Nice pub and recently extended in a tasteful plain rustic fashion. Food was very good but service a bit slow and the coffee was very small and luke-warm (due possibly to a busy Sunday-lunchtime clientele). Staff were very polite and very helpful, overall one of our better local eating experiences. I would certainly recommend this place.

The Elsted Inn, Elsted
After a disappointing dinner at the Three Horseshoes nearby we tried the Elsted Inn on the following evening. What a contrast..!! Landlord and landlady were friendly, chatty and welcoming. Food was tasty (my gammon was delicious). The pub is a haven for car enthusiasts having regular meets for those with 'cherished' automobiles. Delightful.
