The Porthole, North Shields

A good old pub with friendly staff and chatty punters. Had Sunday lunch with friends and the food was surprisingly top notch with a guy playing a piano in the background. Lots of film and music themed pictures adorn the walls. 2 real ales were available. Lots of charm. Recommend.

New Fairlop Oak, Barkingside

This pub has its ups and downs. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. The service isn't great and you have to often wait a while before being served. Opt to go during the week when it's less busy and there aren't so many chavs around. The real ale is always good and the landlady is doing her best to improve the pub; again shame about the service at times.

The Butchers Arms, Herne

This is one of the best pubs I've visited. Good beer, great landlord with friendly, chatty punters - what more can you ask of a pub? Do not miss!

The Fox and Hounds, Houston

This is a brilliant pub and cannot understand why it only scores a 7.6? I've been in other pubs that have scored 8's and they haven't been half as good as the Fox. Ales all brewed on site and are in tip-top condition. Food's delicious and locals friendly enough. What more could you ask for?

The Wellington, Birmingham

I was up from London for a few days and fell upon this pub early one evening. What a cracking boozer! Fantastic choice of real ales from local breweries in a comfortable environment. I think I counted 15 real ales on tap! People very friendly - although I have to agree with one of the reviewers'comments about it getting a bit messy. This was the case when I went there on 2 occasions - it's a shame they can't employ someone to clear glasses, newspapers, etc from the tables and floor. You can also take your own food into the pub and the bar staff will give you cutlery to eat with. 9 out of 10! could be 10 out of 10 if pub was kept tidy, however, will definately return next time I'm in the West Mids. I wonder if anyone's managed to drink the whole range of 15 beers available in one session?

The Olde White Rose, Bilston

This pub doesn't look much outside and to be honest it could do with a bit of a clean-up with a mop and bucket of Flash. However, try not to let this put you off, the pub is friendly with lots of local characters in abundance. There were 12 real ales available when I visited and I found myself staying much longer than I anticipated - slurp. Would definately return. A 30 mins journey from Birmingham Snow Hill to Bilston station - the pub is a 3 mins walk from the station.

The Shakespeare, Birmingham

Was disappointed with this pub which looks lovely outside. Agree with one of the reviewers that the staff are moody. Beer just OK - there were two ales available. Landlord and M&B. This pub seems to lack something.

The Square and Compasses, Fairstead

Took my parents to this pub after hearing it had re-opened after 2 years. Heard good reports so gave it a go. What a surprise - great food, warm and and friendly plus 4 real ales from a local micro - Shalfords I seem to recall? Served from gravity. Aimed at diners there is a small bar where drinks are served and local people gather - it was starting to get crowed when we left. Would definately recommend this pub for a meal and good beer.
