The Square and Compass, Ashill
The Square has lots of unlikely acts playing in "the Barn" behond the pub - including Hazel O'Connor a couple of years ago.
'Propsering' seems a goodword to describe the pub these days, with an expanded kitchen and new outdoor covered seating area. The food is very good and a good range. The beer is good and always includes Somerset stalwart Exmoor Ale.

hould also note that the Halway House is one of the pitifully few pubs in somerset that sells rough cider, including Heck's from Street.

A point to note is that everyone locally would refer to the location at "Windmill Hill" (a false windmill is obvious nearby) rather than ashill

I feel some of the comments below are written to 'curb' the general enthusiam and so don't give an accurate picture - so i will!
THe Halfway House is nothing short of legendary in Somerset, all on current and not past reputation. There are always 10-12 real ales on served straight from the barrel - so no "coronation street" effects going on here! The qaulity is always top notch and the beer is almost all local.
I don't know about lunchtimes but in the evening it's all genuine local drinkers and of all ages - a true mix - i go there ever week and the talk of range rovers rings not even the tiniest bell.
Knowhere else in the westcountry can match it's atmosphere. If you like good eer and atmosphere you'll never rate a pub higher - end of.

The Holman Clavel Inn, Culmhead
The beer here is always top class and served in the proper westcountry style. Always has Butcombe, Butcombe gold and a geust. Good place for northerners to come to learn a lesson in how beer should be served lol!

Must disagree with the post from 13 Apr 2007 - the waiting staff are perfectly fine and and the fodd is NOT overpriced; futhermore, the food is very good, as is the beer. Most of the outside seating is on a mini-pier going out into the river - lots of tables available.
Only thing was that the bar staff were thoroughly rude and miserable (the waiting staff were fien though).

This called THE CROW'S NEST now. Not a building easily leant to creating atmosphere, but this doesnt seem to matter. A warm welcome is always on hand, good range of lager and local real ale, usually a telly quietly showing the football.
It has huge front windows continuosly along the front, which give an uninterupted view of the sea which is truly akin to that from a crows nest.

The food here is seriously good, espcially the burgers which are proper quality. Been going here every year on hols for 20 years and it's been totally constant in terms of what you get and how bizzy it is etc. A proper "pub" like pub, nothing fancy just does the job very well. It has a balcony overlooking the harbour (over 14's only), has three tables out there but it is usually busy in good weather etc.

The current landlord/landlady have been here for ten years now, and the place has been consistently good throughout that time. Never had a bad pint here, seems to be a different geust on every week. Dogs are more than welcome.

The Half Moon Inn, Stoke St Mary
A solid pub that accomadates the village drinking community as well the diners from out of town, and consistently popular with both; never had a bad pint here.

This pub is widely regarded as the only "true" pub in taunton, that hasn't sold out in any way whatsoever. It laso has a beer garden out the back, despite it's towen centre location.

Went here a fewq days ago, been going on and off for years and it's always been pretty consistent. The food is very good and pretty cheap - 6.50 for ham egg and chips, which was very good quality and an ample portion. They've also build a large undercover decked area with tables, so smokers are well accomadated!

It is called the Farmers "Inn" now, not arms, as of the past year-ish.
The food is restaurant style, as in large plate, small-ish amount of food in the middle - not hearty and pub-like.
The beer is very good and served out of the tap on the barrel.
Unless you know immediate area very well, be prepared to get lost as the West Hatch/Slough Green area (the pub is actually in Slough Green, not West hatch) is a warren of deep lanes that all look alike!!

This pub is amazing - it makes the Halfway house at Pitney look like a motorway greasy spoon!!
Unbeleievably wide range on the menu, good beer, and nice staff!
It has internet access for villagers and a post office and sells stuff. It doesnt just serve people from outside, but gives back to it's village. What pubs should do but never do.
All in all it kicks sum serious ass!!!

This pub has a great and deserved reputation. Cheap well-kept beer. However it's a country pub aimed at at city ppl i kinda feel, not the real deal but a very good pub all the same.

The beer at this pub is top class; great pints of Palmers for sale. This is what a westcountry pub really is - it's not a mock-up for city ppl like sum places are. The beer garden is pretty much clifftop, with a 180-dgree viewe of the see, accross to Lyme Regis one way and to Portland Bill on the other, and itlooks straight down onto the beach only 15 yards away. We've enjoyed many summer evening pre-beach bbq drinks here and it kicks sum serious ass!!

The best thing about this pub is that u can go walking with ur dogs, and no-one minds them coming in a bit muddy. Wide variety of dogs can be seen here every day.
They seem to have a different geust beer on here each week and the quality of the beer has been consistently high over the last several years at least.

Incidentally this pub has just been re-named the "Farmers Inn" - a cardinal sin in my opinion.

This is a good pub; simple food, and good quality, cheap ale. However you can't hear yourself speak it's so loud/busy, and dont bring elderly relatives as you'll be lucky to get a seat!

This pub has just changed hands (02/12/06); will be a hard act to follow but many of the old staff remain, andf the new landlords previous pub gets very good reviews on this site!!

I have heard that the Hyamker is in new hands, and that the food and overall package is very good indeed!

It's unfair to call the landlord miserable. This is anice pub, don't know what the food is like.

Great pub, great ale, great food. A true country pub - no old cane rods or irrelevant black and white photo's here, just lurchers, muddy boots and people drinking. Great craic as well.

Fantastic place. Great beer, quality and range, and apparently the food is good too. Spacious but manages not to be too noisy. Staff are freindly, and the general clientel are not as aloof as some of the suburbanesque ppl in the village! a great pub with space for all needs.
20 Jan 2006 18:10
This pub is a bit restauranty now. The decor (wood floor, plain, largely bare walls) and the opne-plan nature of the place means it's very noisy when busy, it can be hard to hear the people you are with speak. Beer is good though, however it's not an easy place to go just for a drink, certainly on weekends.

The Farmers Inn, West Hatch
Not been for a while but know many who have and it has an excellent reputation.
Ignore the comment below about beer quality - there is noproblem with it.
Not somewhere to go just for a drink though as it's an eating pub so no free un-boked seats. Also, i've always felt the bar is too low to comfortably lean on.
