Placed is closed and gone forever. Not surprised really. montie49 - 25 Nov 2018 10:54 |
Have heard that The Burtle has closed but I have not confirmed this at time of writing. If this is the case, we are not surprised at all as a) beer was far too expensive and b) most of the times we went in not only were there no other customers present ( and I mean proper drinkers, not transient scoffers), but no staff either, despite much coughing and rattling of money on bar. As long serving CAMRA members, and locals too, this is a real shame, but, closed or not, The Burtle has has all the chances we're prepared to give it. rioathmusV - 15 Nov 2013 21:40 |
Go to the Burtle Inn, Catcott Rod, Burtle, Somerset, if you have lots and lots of time on your hands and have sufficient patience to wait for your supper. Service is polite but slow - and when I say slow, I mean very slow; even when the main restaurant was empty and the middle bit only had one other diner. That should have told us something about the place, since we visited on Saturday night and the place looked quiet. So a good choice if you like to take your time and have the pick of where to sit. As for the food, well it wasn't that special. The deal breaker was that they messed up the order, brought out the wrong food (after nearly an hour of waiting) and the owner offered 10% off for his mistake. After some heated discussion with his put upon front of house staff, he conceded to 20% off the price of that item - a discount of 2.10 begrudgingly given to make up for his mistake! So I give one for the front of house service but nothing for the rest of the experience of eating in the Burtle Inn. happyfoody - 7 May 2012 17:23 |
Left this review after seeing some less enthusiastic comments posted but we visited twice recently and have nothing but good experiences to report. Atmosphere was what you would want from a good local - roaring fire, old stone floors etc - cheerful locals and staff including visitors in chat. Staff welcoming, efficient and helpful. Food as good as most, good portions and pretty much on par with others locally for price. Some other comments seem intent on splitting hairs in order to paint a bad picture... e.g. As we understand it the pub doesn't brew its own cider nowadays - but it sends its own apples to a local cider maker who then sends a pretty decent cider back to the pub. One person's "dark" is another person's "characterful and cosy". And as for the complaint that they put kidney beans in the chilli - well... Just wish we had a local this pleasant. Made a return to this hostelery after a long abscence, looks just the same, saw no physical changes ie. fresh paint etc. saw what was a few in the restaurant part, mothers day I suspect. looked like a few clicky types in one corner. Didn't even hear any semblence of friendliness, was a them and us situation. as I placed my empty glass on the bar, not even a thank you or goodbye. Place looked shabby and unclean. My pint of spitfire was almost flat even from the hand pull and tasted none to good james55westhead - 18 Mar 2012 17:34 |
