Waggon and Horses, Tipton

A no frills good old fashioned pub with a micro brewery at the rear. Great range of real ales and a friendly atmosphere. The only downside is that parking is limited.

The Pie Factory, Tipton

Well kept ales, albeit a limited range. Passable food. Beer and food outrageously expensive for a fairly crappy Black Country pub

Fountain Inn, Tipton

.... the reviewers who commented that it is a Banks' pub with no real ales are seriously confused (probably mixing it up with the appalling Ace of Spades (aka Barge and Barrel). I have used this pub on and off for more than 30 years and it has not (during that time) been a Banks' pub.

Fountain Inn, Tipton

Three or four ever changing cask ales well kept. A varied pub menu. Competitive prices. Friendly staff and customers. Canalside location. It doesn't get much better than that!

The Knights Quest, Rowley Regis

Since we stumbled on this pub it has become a firm favourite on our lunch rota. Three real ales (Banks' Mild, Banks' Bitter and a guest ale) always in good or better condition and excellent value at less than 2.10 a pint. The carvery is not quite up to Crown Carvery and Toby Carvery standard and only two slices of meat are given but it is still a good lunch portion for 2.95. The decor is fairly nondescript but the staff are friendly. Given its location - at the edge of the shopping area, near to a large pay and display car park and on three bus routes we continue to be surprised that it is not much more popular.

The White Swan, Oldbury

The interior is fairly traditional (I couldn't see any hint of Wetherspoons). Between us we tried all three real ales and although two were excellent the Hobgoblin was merely good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The big disappointment was the food. Those who had the carvery reckoned it OK for 2.50 but would rather have paid more for more and better. I ordered the 8oz sirloin, medium rare. The first to arrive looked like sandwich steak that had been poached in water. It was replaced without any fuss but the second, although showing signs of red juices, still looked like (and had the texture of) sandwich steak. Fairly good for a couple of pints but we will certainly not be eating there again.

The Tap and Spile, Wolverhampton

A group of us visited this pub based on its rating in BITE. What a mistake. Apart from the fact that it is badly in need of redecorating (preferably with napalm) one of our party had a pint of Banks' Mild which he struggled to drink and I had a pint of something that might have been drinkable when it left the brewery. As far as we are concerned it is only worth visiting if there is nowhere else to shelter from the rain.

Hogshead, Wolverhampton

Eight real ales on offer. Between us we tried five and all were well kept and enjoyable. The pub is very similar to Wetherspoons in many ways but during the hour and a half that we were there it was less noisy than Wetherspoons tend to be and will be our pub of choice in future

Bostin Fittle, Dudley

This is a 3AC (avoid at all costs). No cask ales. Staff who leave it to customers to clean tables. Greasy beefburgers and the worst chips that anyone could imagine.

The Lion, Kenilworth

Arriving in Kenilworth by mistake (!) we were initially disappointed to find that there was no J D Wetherspoons but stumbled on the Lion. A choice of three real ales (Courage Directors, Adnams Broadside and Fullers London Pride) - we tried two and found them to be well kept and dispensed at a sensible temperature. The menu was fairly limited but portions were just about right for lunch, the meals were enjoyable and the prices were very reasonable (especially the any two for 6.95!!). All in all a good 7+ out of 10.

JTs Bar and Cafe, Banbury

Initial disappointment to find only two real ales on offer alleviated to find that the choice was Brakspear Oxford Gold and Wychwood Hobgoblin - we sampled both and all agreed that the beers were well kept and moreish.
Mein host was very welcoming and jovial (perhaps we caught him on a good day).
3.10 - 3.30 per pint was something of a shock for Black Country folk used to paying 1.80 - 2.40 but this was offset by the fact that having paid 6.25 for lunch we were all gobsmacked by the size of the portions and the chipshop quality chips (a refreshing change from the plasticy oven chips that are normally served in pubs - one of few niggles with J D Wetherspoons).
We spent five hours in Banbury, visiting four pubs, and all agreed that the meal was the highlight of our visit.
