The Bowling Green, Horwich

Excellent selection of well kept beers and recently a real cider. I wonder if this will become a permanent fixture? A lively pub, busy at weekends with regular live music.

The Crown Hotel, Horwich

Still a good traditional pub, due for a refurbishment/redecorration.

23 Apr 2013 19:06

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

A change in command in the offing. Make the most of it now and keep your fingers crossed that the incoming new people don't ruin it.

Albert Arms, Horwich

Ever changing selection of well kept cask beers from the smaller brewers. Such a shame that the enthusiastic landlord didn't get his hands on the pub before it's modification 15 or so years ago when most of the internal walls and some of the ceilings were removed! Still highly recommended, though.

23 Apr 2013 19:02

The Masons Arms, Atherton

Had run out of the 1 cask beer on my visit, then ran out of Guiness! A shame as a nice traditional type of pub.

The Pheasant Plucker, Bolton

It'd be a shame if it closed but it hasn't tempted me inside for years, so I can say no more. Reverting to being called "The Saddle" would be a good start. View through rear gates of the "beer garden" which appears to consist of a knackered settee is a real treat.

The Victoria, Aspull

This is a very good pub indeed. Allgates own beers plus guests and the occasional ciders. A proper pub!

5 Dec 2011 20:40

The Poacher, Blackrod

Still good.

5 Dec 2011 20:38

Barristers, Blackrod

It's ok - a good choice of beers and a comfortable environment to drink it in.

5 Dec 2011 20:37

The Crown Hotel, Horwich

This is a good traditional Victorian pub with very good beer. I've never had a problem with it.

5 Dec 2011 20:33

The Toll Bar, Horwich

A missed opportunity. A great looking buiding, nicely renovated inside the other year - but insists on serving keg beers only aiming at those drinkers who aren't bothered about what it tastes like as long as it's cheap. I think this comes down to the policy of whichever company owns it . Would attract so many other drinkers in if it sold the right product.

5 Dec 2011 20:24

The Brown Cow, Horwich

Not the best pub in Horwich but it's ok.

5 Dec 2011 20:19

The Crown Hotel, Horwich

Gets a lot of criticism for just being a straightforward traditional pub where you don't have to shout to get over the music and there isn't Sky TV coming at you from all angles. Why?

12 Sep 2011 20:02

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

Always entertaining, always for an unpredictable variety of reasons. Great beer, still the best pub in Horwich.

12 Sep 2011 19:57

The Bowling Green, Horwich

What has gone wrong here? Once again the Bowling Green goes from good to bad - a real shame.

12 Sep 2011 19:55

Albert Arms, Horwich

Used to be a pub to avoid. Now it has been turned around, it is very good indeed. A lot of effort has been put into offering excellent beer, always something from smaller independants including the new Horwich brewed "Black Edge" beer. A pub that deserves support.

12 Sep 2011 19:53

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

Feels like home - a welcome bit of consistency in the ever changing pub scene in Horwich. Long may it continue in this vein.

Albert Arms, Horwich

First visit since re-opening. I too found it better than I expected, cask beer was Ok. As long as it continues to be run to the standard that it is obviously being done at the moment - i.e. no yobs/yoof etc - it should be alright.

26 Oct 2010 11:40

The Courtyard, Horwich

Now "The Courtyard Wine Bar". Basic floorplan is more or less as before though the bar has moved backwards into what was previously the small room with the dartboard. Could do with more seating. No cask beer. Most punters seemed to be on lager rather than wine! Another pub option, I guess.

26 Oct 2010 11:34

The Great Western Arms, Aynho

Welcoming pub located between the Oxford Canal and the railway line (sadly the staion is no longer open). Excellent beer, didn't try the food but it looked very good.

16 Apr 2010 19:18

The Trigger Pond, Bucknell

Excellent beer, enjoyed the food. No complaintsat all.

Bob's Smithy, Montserrat

First visit since the pub was redecorated. It is now in an off-white dominated hotel-bar-in-Blackpool inspired scheme which, though professionally done, is a tad out of place in a stone pub up on the Lancashire moors. It is worth going to to look at the regulars, though. If you wondered where all the successful Thatcher era people who emerged from council estates to do well in double glazing and car sales have gone, look no further. Proving that expensive designer clothes and accessories don't necessarily make people look good, it's worth going just to look at the footwear.....

That aside, sitting outside on a summers evening with a glass of cask ale, looking down over a panorama that takes in the Peak District, the distant North Wales mountains right up to the Lake District kind of makes up for a lot.

The No 2 Refreshment Rooms (Under the Clock), Cleethorpes

An excellent, welcoming pub on the railway station.

24 Sep 2009 18:33

Barristers, Blackrod

Now refurbished as Barrister's. Yet to be tried.

24 Sep 2009 18:30

The Poacher, Blackrod

Landlord seems to be making a real effort here - two more handpumps added to the bar bringing the real ales on offer to six. A proper traditional pub.

24 Sep 2009 18:29

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

I would think the blame for the price hike here is really rooted with a greedy Pubco, in this case Enterprise Inns who own the pub rather than the licencee.

7 May 2009 21:37

The Crispin, Ashover

Historic pub though has obviously undergone recent revamp to the interior which still feels a bit too new for an old pub! I'm sure it'll blend in better in time. Very good beer, food not sampled but looked excellent. Slightly posher clientele than the Poets and Black Swan at time of visit, but still welcoming. If you're in Ashover, just try them all.....

14 Apr 2009 18:17

Black Swan, Ashover

Popular with the locals but friendly towards visitors. Excellent beer.

14 Apr 2009 18:11

The Old Poet's Corner, Ashover

Excellent pub with great atmosphere and superb food. Have visited several times over the last few years, recently B&B - also recommended. Micro brewery out the back supplies some of the beers which are named after locos and features of the old long closed Ashover Light Railway. A good base for visiting the area, Matlock etc.

14 Apr 2009 18:10

The Toll Bar, Horwich

Any old Toll Bar regulars from the 80's and 90's may like to know that I met former landlord & landlady George and Daphne today - both are looking well 12 years into their retirement from the pub.

12 Mar 2009 21:13

The Poacher, Blackrod

Similarly very happy to find this pub open again, friendly, welcoming with excellent beer on offer. It's good to have it back.

3 Mar 2009 18:49

The Spinners Arms, Adlington

I could also do without the Bingo, I wonder if it is as beneficial to the pub as it initially seems, most of the many participants appear to drink little and go as soon as it finishes. A very good pub, though, excelent and changing choice beers on offer if a tad expensive compared to other pubs in the area. Well worth a visit, though.

3 Mar 2009 18:47

The Toll Bar, Horwich

Great news about the cask ale, will definitely come in and give it a try. Good to see that an effort is obviously being made to match what has already been achieved with the building and decor.

3 Mar 2009 18:35

The Prince Of Wales, Chorley

Such a good pub. Don't go drinking in Chorley without going there.

14 Feb 2009 10:02

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

Townie has cerainly contributed the most graphically beautiful and focused pub review I have ever read on BITE. I stand breathtaken by his poetic eloquence.

14 Feb 2009 10:00

The Courtyard, Horwich

Good grief. Half of me wants to go into the pub tonight to see what all the fuss is about, the other half wants to stay as far away as possible in case I walk into a fight scene from West Side Story........;

14 Feb 2009 09:59

The Kings Head, Bolton

Excellent. A proper pub with rooms, good beer, locals and no intrusive music.

7 Dec 2008 18:44

The Bowling Green, Horwich

Always entertaining if at times a bit savage. Great beer, the town would be worse without it.

7 Dec 2008 18:40

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

Defintely on the up, though the effort that has obviously been put into having a television visible from every possible corner is lost on me. I still like this pub a lot, though.

7 Dec 2008 18:39

The Crown Hotel, Horwich

This is just a straightforward and very traditional Victorian pub aimed at people who want to be able to talk to each other without having to shout over loud music. It does what it does very well. I can't see why people have a problem with it.

7 Dec 2008 18:32

The Toll Bar, Horwich

I agree with boltonbloke in that effort has been put into the pub itself, what a shame that it has been aimed at the drinker whose priority is how much the beer is rather than the quality. Maybe it is a reflection of the current financial situation, but a quality cask beer on sale would, I think, justify itself by the drinkers who would use the pub as a result. At least it is still a pub and not a restaurant or another boarded up former pub.

27 Nov 2008 13:01

The Crown Hotel, Horwich

Fulfils a definite need. A proper traditional Victorian town boozer - was built for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company to cater for the upsurge in residents of Horwich when they built their loco works there in the 1880's. A pub to go to if you want to talk to your drinking partner(s) and be heard, we go there in between visits to the louder pubs in town. Pubs don't exist just for the under 30's as some reviewers seem to think..If you want somewhere loud and brash there are plenty of other options to go to in Horwich. The Crown does what it does very well.

22 Apr 2008 22:34

Original Bay Horse, Horwich

A great pub handicapped by the current rash of foul mouthed young "chav" drinkers who inhabit the beer garden, can't hold their alcohopops and who occaionally spill over into the inside of the pub where people are trying to have a social drink, ruining the atmosphere - and the glazing, as boltonbloke correctly points out. I was in that night too and I can confirm that most of those who were involved in the incident that ended in the breaking of the window were back in the pub with their bottles of WKD soon afterwards. I love this pub and hope that the landlady regains a grip of it before people start abandoning it for less savage surroundings.

22 Apr 2008 22:25

The Toll Bar, Horwich

Currently up for sale though still open. Will some kind soul please buy it and turn it back into the superb pub it was ten years ago before it becomes yet another ex-pub turned Italian/Indian/Chinese restaurant or gets demolished for a block of flats?

18 Apr 2008 10:55

The Bowling Green, Horwich

Definitely on the up. Excellent Bank Top beer, a pub worth visiting.

18 Apr 2008 10:48

The Courtyard, Horwich

Live music on Saturday nights. When visited no cask ale available. Decor is certainly a bit on the white side. Difficult to get to the bar due to the people propping it up being unwilling to move. When we went to leave we found our shoes had stuck to the carpet - a new floor covering or a deep clean needed here.

18 Apr 2008 10:44

The Toll Bar, Horwich

Now up for sale. Hopefully will remain a pub, but in this day and age the chances of it becoming another pub turned Indian/Italian/Tapas restaurant have got to be a possibility.

23 Dec 2007 22:57

The Bowling Green, Horwich

Not for the faint hearted. Now seems to be full of alpha males doing their best to prove Darwin's theory is correct.

27 Sep 2007 12:36

The Clifton Arms, Bolton

Definitely on the up.

15 Aug 2007 12:43

The Railway Hotel, Parbold

Seems to have a resident kn*bhead - look out for the big guy with the shaved head and Rugby shirt who thinks that he's the life and soul of the pub and side-splittingly funny, but isn't....

Still a good pub worth going in as long as you can control the natural and understandable urge to plant him one.

29 Jul 2007 19:58

The Rabbit Inn, Southport

I like this pub. Just away from the tourist areas, catering for the local population but friendly to a visitor. Beer very good.

29 Jul 2007 19:53

The Guest House, Southport

An excellent pub with a choice of cask beers, several proper rooms - like pubs used to be. Deservedly popular.

29 Jul 2007 19:49

The Railway Hotel, Parbold

You're right about the chippy, though the Indian takeaway next door is first rate. Will try to add The Stocks and The Windmill as both appear to be absent. All pubs in Parbold are different and worth visiting, really.

15 May 2007 20:34

The Wayfarer, Parbold

Good beer, food looked good though not sampled. Car park full of big 4x4's but not a farmer in sight.

15 May 2007 20:30

The Queens Head, Horwich

Looks great from the outside. Unfortunately......

8 May 2007 20:48

The Bowling Green, Horwich

Now advertising a "Quiz Night" - presumably where you have to guess when the pub will be open.

8 May 2007 20:42

Willy's Pub and Brewery, Cleethorpes

Beers still good but atmosphere isn't as friendly as it once was. A few too many heavy drinking middle aged lads hanging round the bar. It can feel heavy and agressive in a way it never used to.
