The Gunmakers Arms, Birmingham

It may have got off to a slow start.
Beer goes down well, the staff enjoy serving a Birmingham made beer and I see people drinking beer who at one time would only drink the larger..

I recommend you visit and judge for your self.

Back in Jan 2014 I found the service at Church was very poor.

Last night they was unable to serve any beer. Problems with cooler.

I will return soon to try the beer.

Was passing the other night, still a warm welcome but you canot turn the clock back. I only had time to stay for one drink but would like to make time for another visit.

I have very fond memories and I agree that its time for new ones to be made.

I will revisit.
I would not put a rating after such a short visit.

I was pleased to have a pint or two the other day at "The Chandlers". They have done a lot work inside, it took me some time to work out my way around.

I had a warm welcome no one I remember from the past. If I lived ion the village I would enjoy a drink or two and maybe even more.

A lot of food on the go.

Was passing, so called in Stood at the bar with money in hand. Two bar staff talking to each other regarding the t v the night before after few mins gave in and left.
On the way back thought I would try again, staff still talking to each other rather then looking after customers.

This is a pub with great history, will go back and hope I get the beer that I hoped for at last visit.

It nice to see Andy Taylor post a note. He and his family worked hard at the pub,

Locals still remember the Taylor's. When they purchased the pub Brian offered David Godfrey £1 deposit good faith, David was rather taken back.

We had some good nights and some times we saw the sun rise. People used to travel miles because of the food.

June 2nd 2013. I did not think would ever have another drink in "The Church".

A lot of work gone into getting the pub open once more. The pub had a good turn out, people seemed to be enjoying both the food and to me more important the beer.

When I walked in a warm welcome.

I hope it works well and I will return in the next few weeks.

For those who remember good times at "THE CHURCH" it is worth another visit.

The Church Inn, Hockley

I have drank in this pub for over forty years, seen some great land lords and staff. Ray Wilkes knew how to offer a beer, not been a beer drinker him self he took pride in his pub.

He put on food and people would travel many miles to eat. The beer and food never got in the way od each other.

I hope that the refurb does not kill the history of this once great place. Birmingham needs the history of its pubs and we have allowed many pubs to get in the hands of people , who drink in bars not pubs.

I look forward to having a drink once more and hope its more then one drink that I return I have.

Hi all, I miss my visits to this great little pub. I met dinigrow, who was working hard behind the bar.

I miss a great beer, staff who try hard to make you welcome and great pub.

For those who have not yet made a visit, Coleshill rail St not to far away and apart from the Green Man you will find many more pubs around that would take a full days visit.
But the Green Man I am sure is number one

Is it not a great pity that some people have to express comments on this site that families can read, that use such words that were used by nokegthanks on 15/09/2010.

If he does not like this or any other pub I would fully support his views, but would he like such words to be used with regard to himself.

I shall be going to the Wellington tonight. I known that I will be a warm welcome when I arrive. Then I will have to choose from 15 beers.

It is well worth a visit. I often take visitors to the Wellington, the next time they arrive they ask to revisit the place.

I was pleased that he says he is "no expert"

If you ask for a head on your pint the staff are more then pleased to do so.

He also questioned if the lines are kept clean?

The staff are seen cleaning the pipes regular.

To say that the beer taste the same, I have never had two beers that taste the same.

Please see my review of 11/07/09. I still have not been back, passed many times looked into a empty bar. I note that my review was only one of three in 2009.

If you look at the history of the reviews they came thick and fast in 08,07, you will see in Dec 08 I felt the Church was on it's way back.

But please note I have not been back since 2009 and see no reason why I should.

I would like to thank Helan her staff and regulars who were present on 25th September 2009, when we said farewell to my father.

Eric Phillips died at the age of 95 it was only seven days before that he was at the Green Man, he always felt very welcome enjoyed the fact that he would always find some one to have a chat with regardless of age.
He only became a regular some eleven years ago but when I went to vist him he was quick to say let's go and have a drink at the Green Man.

His Grand Children, Great Grand Children, were pleased to say farewell in a place that he had spoken of many times to them, they now understood why he enjoyed his night out at the Green Man.

Thanks from his Boys.

I have drank in the Church for over 40 years. On 4th June 2009 I was looking forward to a drink at the Church. When I walked in four people were at the bar, one of which were Vickey the (land lady). The person who was with Vickey made a very offence comment to me. To my shock Vickey even though she heard the comment she made no comment it appears that it was acceptable.

I no longer feel able to support this pub which I had great hopes Vickey would bring back to life.

I was going to say pub closed, but I see crazy_joe_devola already done so.

31 Aug 2008 11:16

The Dog Inn, Water Orton

I have very fond memories of this pub. Back in 1974 Wilf Jeffreies with Margaret ran the pub, I asked Wilf for a job one night and worked for them for years he sacked me many times I was back behind the bar the next shift. We were friends for years.

Then it was a locals pub that was before the M6 & M42 I think the last bus from Birmingham was 23.00hrs.

The pub was in the winter always had an open fire in both rooms. We often had a bonfire on what was the old bowling green.

I find it impossable to pass, I drink in the bar and I still feel the welcome in the place and I would recommend that you visit. The village got some good walks still.

The pub and village have a lot of history around. Come out of the pub cross the road go up the hill ( the old off license was there) turn right at the top you will find a almost lost road.

I have known of this pub for years, it was a very small pub.

Well I made a visit the other day to find that major work been done to the place.

The inside looks like the "tardus" but I did not see Dr who, he may have been in some corner.

The garden is like another room.

Sam just needs people to discover the place, if the sun would come out the garden be great place to spend to afternoon.

Well worth a visit.

Green Man, Coleshill

Hi all, you will see that I have already said a few words regarding the "Green Man" on 26th June 08 this was in reponce to the comment of A_drinker in October 2006. I felt his comments were rather out of date.

I was at the Green man again on 29th June 08, thats twice in a week. It was a rather busy night, at the next table a young man was sat with his family in conversation with my father who's 94 he said he was 20 and he was not the youngest in the pub.

I feel you should visit and post a comment to show what a welcoming place it is and at the same time you can have a well kept beer.

So I do recomend that this is a place to visit.

30 Jun 2008 11:51

The Bell Inn, Coleshill

To enjoy this pub you need youth on your side and to be of an age when you just discovered cider.

I would not want to drink in a place that needs bouncers.

But to be fare to the place it's a nursery for drinkers the bouncers may be to keep them in and safe.

26 Jun 2008 12:46

The Green man is a locals pub, having drank at the pub since ths age of 18ish some forty years. I feel I can say that it is a frendly place to visit even if you are lucky enough to be under forty.

Helan present landlady done a lot to bring the pub into present high standards and I assure you a warm wecome no matter what your age.

Helan also made a graet effort for the smokers, if you are a smoker worth a visit

The Duke Of York, Iddesleigh

If your are looking for a English village pub, this will be on your list.
Beer at it's best, the down side is it is at times very busy this may have something to do with the beer.

Don't just visit in the summer in the winter you will see a log fire that you will want to go back and have a second look to make sure you saw wright the first time.

26 Jun 2008 11:59

Farmers Arms, Muker

I was looking at pubs that I have known from the past and came accross "The Farmers Arms".
Between 1969 - 1979 I used to spend January in the village and most nights at the pub.
I always felt welcome and never remember a bad pint.

If you are a walker, the area full of great walks, from just a stroll down to the river to some great climb, those not able to walk far some great drives ( dont miss the "Butter tubs pass"),for some reason no one drives fast.

I rememeber one winter we could not get the car out due to the snow. a farmer got out his tractor and got us on our way it took hours. That the sort of welcome you get.

Must go back with luck it may snow.

The Church Inn, Hockley

Last night 24th June 2008, I was verey pleased to walk into The Church Inn @ Hockley. I thought the last time I was there was going to be the last.

I thought it would close and become even more flats, so it was with joy that I walked in to be met with a welcome from the new landlady "Vicky".

The pub been closed for a few weeks, Vicky said that she's had a lot of work to get the pub ready to welcome customers back and still got a lot to do.
It was even more pleasing to see some of the old regulars come in.

Vicky said that she not sure what her plans are, she hopes to put on food but needs to do some work on the kitchen first.

The Church able to offer "sunchaser" @ " Holdens Blackcountry" after a few pints I can confirm both are good.

This coming Friday 27th June Vicky putting on an opening party:-
Karaoke/DJ
Buffet
Bubbly.

I look forward to a few more enjoyable nights at the Church.

The Bull, Birmingham

The Bull always worth a visit, it nice to see staff who care that the beer served to a high standard.

They also serve food that your mother would approve of.

The Bull is able to offer a choice of three rooms where you are able to enjoy your beer and talk to the person the other side of the table with no back room noise.

For the smoker The Bull set out a garden space where you can sit in comfort.
