The Guildhall Bar, Malmesbury

Changed to an Italian Restaurant (which is very nice). But not a pub.

The Borough Arms, Malmesbury

Finally succumbed to the neighbours. Closed.

Charlton Inn, Charlton Marshall

I'm not sure if this has changed hands since the last review, but if it hasn't, they have cleaned up their act considerably. Popped in for a business lunch, and had a pretty perfect experience - great coffee, lovely baguette served rapidly, and top notch service. Can't speak to the beer despite the website as I was driving but the old boys next to me did not shirk in piling through three pints of ale in the time I was there and I'll take their demonstration as it being as good as the food. Recommended, especially for drivers on the way through as it has a cracking car park and speedy turnaround on the light food. Nice, homely building too.

The Carriers, Stockton

Tucked away local site in tiny Stockton - and what a find. Stayed locally and wanted to find somewhere to while away an evening, and this didn't disappoint. Cracking ales, well kept, and the service was friendly. As a Wiltshire lad, I have been to a fair few country sites but never had as warm a welcome. Food was stunning and won't hesitate to recommend. Well worth a detour if you are heading up (or down) this way. A gem.

The Smoking Dog, Malmesbury

The Smoking Dog is a Brains managed house, and stocks the breweries beers, as well as some guests. The site is attractive, and has a good sized beer garden at the rear. Operates a packed out Beer and Sausage festival once a year. The food is reasonable but nothing special. Should be the best pub in the area by a mile, but is tired and in need of a relaunch. Not a bad pub, but could be so much better.

The Three Cups Inn, Malmesbury

A pub that has struggled due to a regular change of operator, despite occupying a prime location amongst residential streets. Has a small rear courtyard garden and a seperate skittle alley/private hire space. Serves food currently and has recieved a facelift - if it can find a stable operator willing to invest, it could become an excellent pub. Currently however, it is merely good.

The Red Bull Inn, Malmesbury

Situated just outside the town, the Red Bull has been improved greatly in the recent past. A redecoration and outdoor development has grown up at the same time as the local youth football club development directly adjacent. Good food and ale are now in place, served by competent and welcoming staff. Skittle Alley at rear and an attractive garden with children's play area. Especially good for families.

The Whole Hog, Malmesbury

An excellent local hostelry, with a good beer range. Food is variable - based on the dozen or so times I have eaten there, I would say a quarter were not of the same standard as the other three quarters - differing chefs perhaps? There is no music in the pub, which will be a benefit for some and a negative for others. The service is good, and as previous posters have mentioned, it's location in the Market Cross and large frontal windows give excellent opportunities to people watch. Sadly no garden.

The Guildhall Bar, Malmesbury

Previously run as a similar operation to the Borough Arms next door, but far from as well. Currently closed. As with the Boroughs, it is a private lease held by the chartered organisation that owns other properties in town. Currently closed.

The Borough Arms, Malmesbury

The Borough Arms is a small, basic pub just off the High Street on a one way system. The landlord is friendly and personable; the atmosphere, although rowdy on occasion, has never seemed problematic to me. It attracts a wide crowd, from 18 - 60. There is regular live music and a small garden, but sadly not much of an ale range. The pub has suffered from a campaign by a small minority of local residents who buy a house near a pub and then expect it to be a nunnery. It still stands however, and that is testament to the fact that it is far more lively and welcoming than a good deal of the other local pubs, despite their percieved "standards". No food, Skittle alley at rear. Recommended for those who value experience and drink quality over aesthetics.
