The Smoking Dog is a Brains managed house, and stocks the breweries beers, as well as some guests. The site is attractive, and has a good sized beer garden at the rear. Operates a packed out Beer and Sausage festival once a year. The food is reasonable but nothing special. Should be the best pub in the area by a mile, but is tired and in need of a relaunch. Not a bad pub, but could be so much better. LocalCharacter - 25 Jul 2013 22:56 |
Sadly this pub seems to have become a bit rundown since earlier visits a few years ago, especially the gents toilets. Cotleigh Barn Owl on gravity was past its best so switched to the Rev. James which was OK. Otherwise Butcombe and Landlord available. Food OK but nothing special. Looks like it will be the Whole Hog next time we stop here. brianagain - 19 Jul 2011 21:34 |
This pub should be better than it is. It's an old building yet strangely lacking in character and atmosphere. Was there yesterday for their annual beer & sausage festival. Aforesaid beer & sausages were fine but it didn't seem particularly festive. Most (not all) of the staff seemed vaguely uninterested and there were too many young kids running around while their yummy mummies swigged chardonnay. A bit of a disappointment. mousefan - 31 May 2011 16:19 |
Drinks were ok but food was not good. I was camping at the nearby Burton Hill campsite (which incidentally was very good) with two of my kids. The food was averagely priced but was of very poor quality and quantity. Poor quality fish fingers and chicken nuggets for the kids (4.50 each) and my battered haddock (8.50) had numerous bones and not much fish. None of the meals had that many chips. Not good and would not recommend for food. Cannonbolt - 31 Aug 2010 21:32 |
