Now re-opened. Called in on Saturday afternoon before the match. Place was busy but not packed. The four behind the bar were making a good fist of serving everyone in good time. Four real beers on. Two from the local Bradfield Brewery (my Farmers Blonde was excellent at 2:20) and two from Thwaites (but this is not a Thwaites pub by the way). Beer list on the wall suggests that they have many other beers which are on rotation. Atmosphere, cleanliness and beer all seem much better that before it closed. Only problem is that we have so many good pubs in Sheffield and I've only got one liver!

The Blackwater Stream, Broadstone
I always want to dislike Wetherspoon pubs. I dislike the big corporate thing. However, they do what they do so very well. Spent a weekend in Broadstone a couple of weeks ago. Saturday night in the Blackwater Stream was busy but we managed to get a table. The staff were pleasant. The food was very good and excellent value for money and the beer was spot on. Can't find anything to complain about unfortunately.

Called in here before the game. Proper good pub. Excellent landlady. Friendly locals and excellent beer (I was drinking 'Bitter and Twisted' which was as good as anything I've had for many a long day). Unfortunately the footie result went against us but I'll be back here the next time we play Bury hoping for the same beer but a different result.

Called in last Friday with the missus. I've been in the Harlequin many times before and we are well acquainted with Sheffield's 'valley of beer'. Very few people in the pub while we were in (8:30 ish). Got myself a pint of something which I can't remember the name of now but which was clearly 'off'. Had an initial slurp and my wife had a sip because I wanted to confirm what I thought (although I didn't have any doubt). Took the more than 3/4 pint back to the bar and had a (pleasant) discussion with the lad behind the bar who insisted that this beer was mean't to taste like this (vinegar flavoured beer, what a novelty!). He eventually agreed to change it for something else and then pulled me a half because he said that was all the landlady would allow as a replacement.
I shan't be going back here. I don't make a habit of complaining without good reason and if there had been any doubt about the beer I would not have had an issue with drinking it. I have had many, many beers over the years which have not been to my taste but I wouldn't dream of taking them back unless they were obviously 'off'. Many more good pubs in the vicinity so I shan't miss this one too much.

It's been closed but I passed recently and noticed that it had a sign on the door which said that it is about to re-open.

The New Barrack Tavern, Sheffield
In addition to my last comment. Have I had a drop too much or is that picture out of focus?

The New Barrack Tavern, Sheffield
A fine pub in the Tyne Mill chain. Landlord and landlady go that extra mile to make you feel welcome and the beer is always spot on. My favourite evening is several pints here and then a stroll straight up the hill to eat at Mama Mia Pepes Italian restaurant.
Having said that. We've also eaten here. It serves good value pub fare which has always been well cooked.

Went past this pub last week and it's closed. Not sure whether this is a temporary or permanent situation.

The Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield
The Crown HPA is the best beer I've ever had and I've had more than a few in my time! Smashing pub. Another slightly out of the way Sheffield gem. Although this one is a bit easier to get to than some 'cos it' on the tram route.

Excellent pub. Huge range of drinks at very good prices and a huge range of customers. Friendly staff. Can get very busy on Friday and Saturday night. I've only ever had very well kept beer here. Highly recommended.

A favourite of ours. Always a friendly welcome and beer kept impeccably. If you have never been and you like a proper pub then it is well worth the effort to get to (having said that, it's no effort for us - it's on our bus route. Whey-hey!). It's part of our Gardeners Rest, Kelham Island Tavern, Fat Cat and The Harlequin beer run and I think it comes out at the top of the pile amongst all that very stiff competition. 9/10 and I can't imagine ever giving a pub 10/10.

Been closed for years and (I though I'd never say this about a pub) good riddance.

Went here on Saturday before the match (although it's not within easy walking distance of the ground - see below). There's a sign outside which reads (something like) 'good food, good beer, grumpy landlord'. Well he wasn't. He was very friendly and made us feel more than welcome.
I thought that the beer was good but not brilliant and it was expensive at 3:10 for a pint of Tribute. It was the only pub in Yeovil that we went in so I don't know how it compares to the others on price.
The food was OK. The lunchtime menu has various main meals for a fiver. The portions weren't over generous but you got veg and potatoes, which made a nice change from the ubiquitous portion of chips. What food there was, was very nice and like I said it was only a fiver, so can't really complain about the portion size.
One thing I did find a bit strange. The landlord asked how we intended to get from the pub to the match. We told him taxi and he advised setting off at 13:30 if we didn't want to be get there too close to kick-off as the traffic, he said, was horrendous on matchdays. I'd already booked the cab for 14:15 and we decided to stick with that. It turned up on time and dropped us right outside the away end turnstiles before 14:30. Landlords idea of a joke?

Called Saturday evening. Splendid place. Beer was cracking and the pub feels very friendly. It is still relatively unspoilt (although it has clearly been 'knocked through' at some point) with some very impressive stained glass in the place. Can't comment on the food because haven't tried it yet (but I will). This is the second time I have called in. On the first occasion (Saturday lunchtime), including us, there were four people in the pub. Last Saturday evening it was busier but by no means heaving. If pubs as good as this can't pack 'em in it's not suprising that pubs are closing as fast as they are.

Called in here on Saturday evening. It's a sight to behold with all the original tile-work etc. A bit like stepping back in time. Unfortunately the bar staff were miserable and didn't seem to be able to pull a pint. No head and in the wrong glass. Still it was very busy at the time so I suppose they had a valid excuse. I will have to try again when it's a bit quieter (which shouldn't be too much of a chore!) The pub did have a good range of beers and is obviously now on the real ale radar of many Sheffield drinkers i.e. there were familiar faces from the Kelham Island, Fat Cat, Commercial and others.

I have used this pub for many years. Always plenty of real ales to choose from (usually 2 or 3 from the Wentworth Brewery which is just up the road and four others). There are eleven other draught lagers, fruit beers, ciders etc and a good selection of bottled stuff and it has been in The Good Beer Guide for the last 10 consecutive years.
Food is home cooked and good value (try the homemade meat and potato pie, chips and peas on the lunchtime 'special' menu for a very substantial meal at a very good price - less than four quid currently). Chips are real (i.e. chunky and fried).
Atmosphere is usually very good with a mixture of locals / regulars of all ages (a surprising number of younger drinkers given the 'style' of pub this is) and some camra / real ale types. Paul the landlord is a bit of a fixture and will make you feel very welcome.
The pub has a 'games room' which has a pool table and a pinball machine (not many pubs with these nowadays). The games room also has a jukebox but this is never 'intrusive' if you want to have a bit of peace and quiet in the bigger 'best' room. The pub also has a small snug if you want to be really anti-social.
I have scored this pub 9/10. I can never imagine giving any pub 10/10 but I think that this is as good as a pub gets!
Sheffield is blessed with more than it's share of real ale pubs. I regularly use many of them, including The Kelham Island Tavern which won the Camra 'British Pub of the Year' this year (2009) but I think that The Commercial is a better all round pub!

The Palatine, Morecambe
Called in here last Sunday lunchtime. Good little pub with very friendly and helpful staff. Several real beers from the Lancaster Brewery and (i think) four guest beers. Started with a pint of Lancaster Blonde which was disappointing. It had an end of barrel taste and, lo' and behold when I went back to the bar it had been taken off. Subsequently tried Thwaites Albert Wainwright and the Lancaster Blonde again, once it had gone back on, both of which were excellent. From upstairs there are nice views across the bay. Can't comment too much on the food as we only had pizza and chips (which were very nice though). Amongst our little group the general consensus was that this is a top little pub!
