The Half Moon, Hitchin

I have very mixed feelings about this pub. The landlord is a wonderful gent who knows and keeps a vast array of good ales and ciders at very reasonable prices and I would drink and eat there if it were not for the downside.
The landlady is a tyrant who is ignorant and downright rude and I hate watching the cats walk up and down the bar as I fear what goes on in the kitchen.
There is a strict no music, no games policy here which can make it a bit of a sterile environment. There's lots of talk of bait and rods and good fishing but some very friendly and warm characters.
Being only one of three pubs in Hitchin to serve Stowford, I'd very much like to drink there again as The Sunrunner has disappeared up it's own rear end, however the landlady scares me off.

The Bricklayers Arms, Hitchin

I do occasionally watch the footie in here, it's a proper old spit and sawdust blokes pub with pool and darts. The beer's not great but acceptable and the atmosphere is friendly enough.

Coopers Arms, Hitchin

I use the Coopers to watch sport and eat (the food is very good but pricey in my opinion) being a McMullens pub the beer is truly awful and the draught cider is of course Strongbow, which is also truly awful. Very good pint of Guinness but dear.

The Kings Arms, Hitchin

Friendly staff, good ale and cider which is well kept. Two drawbacks 1; you never know when it is going to be open and 2; make sure you've left before 9pm on a weekend when it transforms into a creche. This place could be a wonderful pub with some money spent on it, you do feel like you're going back in time as you go in, but they have live music and open mic nights occasionally but never advertise it which is a shame.

The Red Hart, Hitchin

Has been subject of a refurb relatively recently, good pub grub but since they got rid of the jukebox not a place on my drinking list and with it being Greene King, it serves terrible ale and cider on draught.

The Cock Hotel, Hitchin

Greene King so no further comment necessary on the beer or cider. Very good for a cheap lunch though - two people including drinks under 30. The central area is always full of "Weatherspoonians" which can be very off-putting. If you don't set your expectations too high can be a laugh in the evening at weekends but always very full and the bouncers on the door give the "atmosphere" away a bit.

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

My local for the last five years has been transformed into the bar from Hell by a greedy landlord. All the beer has gone up and is badly kept by the inept bar staff (make sure you have a book to read whilst waiting to get served). The real ale has been reduced in quality and choice but has rocketed to ridiculous prices. The wine now costs the same for half the amount it was and the spirits cost the same for 25gil as it did for 35gil a few months ago. Now decorated and done up like a ponce parlour to attract the Friday and Saturday night crew only. No regard for the regulars and the female equivelant of Manuel behind the bar. GOODBYE!!

The Victoria, Hitchin

If you stick to the guest ale you can drink here, Aspall's cider is available on draught but its 4.25!!! Food is very good I hear but whenever I've been there I've struggled to find an enjoyable pint and any room to breathe.

Molly Malone's, Hitchin

Good to see sports in and good to know they have live music, however a pub needs good beer and Molly's doesn't deliver. As soon as you see Strongbow on tap you know you're in trouble. I used to drink in there for the music and the Stowford Press, but now that's been discontinued I shan't be using it no more.

The Albert Inn, Hitchin

I have started using The Albert on recommendation and must say it has really turned around since Paul took over. The ale is good and so is the Cider, interesting bottled beers (Innes and Gunn not seen anywhere else in Hitchin) and the prices are very good. There's live music, a friendly atmosphere, pool table and jukebox. My only criticism is risking death to get to the gents down the dodgy staircase. It will become my regular haunt as although I like other pubs in Hitchin they are either Green King or McMullens, which serve bad ale and Strongbow.
