Visited this pub for the first time yesterday and the immediate impressions were good. The pub was busy without being crowded, there was an atmosphere of bonhomie, and there were four handpumps, albeit three were selling Greene King ales. I had the Xmas guest ale which was well-kept, although a little strong for a lunchtime pint at 4.8%. The food, however, was a disappointment. I ordered the cheese, potato and onion pie which was supposed to come with greens. The pie should have been called a potato pie as there was little evidence of either cheese or onion; the greens consisted of a handful of frozen peas. My mate had the ox-cheek and tongue pie which sounds great. However, when he cut into it, the meat appeared to have been incinerated - probably the result of being warmed up on more than one occasion. When he mentioned this to the member of staff (landlady?), all she could say was that someone else had also mentioned this. She clearly didn't give a toss. At £9.50 apiece, these pies were very poor value for money. I won't be eating here again. Number11 - 21 Dec 2013 17:54 |
If you stick to the guest ale you can drink here, Aspall's cider is available on draught but its 4.25!!! Food is very good I hear but whenever I've been there I've struggled to find an enjoyable pint and any room to breathe. GLR - 17 May 2012 14:59 |
I popped in here today for a quick drink, having not visited for years. I thought I didn't think much of Greene King, but the half of St Edmunds I had was surprisingly good. There was a good (friendly) atmosphere. The choice of ales are a bit limited (I spotted only one guest ale), but the pub seems to be doing the right things generally. It has a comfortable feel to it, and although it's not that remarkable, it's the sort of place you might end up spending all evening in. hitchinsampler - 3 Sep 2011 22:46 |
Good local pub with well kept Guinness. It is always warm in the winter and the small garden is lovely in the summer. zoomy - 10 Jun 2010 22:08 |
