Uluru, Edinburgh

Good as a starting, ending point for a session on round this part of town however not recommended for a quiet pint or a decent pint for that matter.

Cheap prices here are an advantage but tend to attract the riff raff. Went a few times as a student and never saw any bother but there was always that little edge to the clientele.

Overall not bad, but with so many better pubs within 10 mins walking distance, only recommended if you're really skint/not fussy on what you drink.

B@1 (Be At One), Covent Garden

Even though I usually stick to the beer, I loved getting involved in the happy hour cocktails in this place, none of which I'm glad to say tasted like diesel like some other so called 'cocktails' I've tried in my time. The range of cockails on offer was good as was the service (you get the feeling these guys actually enjoy putting on the show of making your drinks).

Can imagine this place would get pretty busy come Friday @ 5pm but well worth a visit if you're in the neighbourhood.

The Maple Leaf, Covent Garden

A solid enough, if unspectacular pub. As per the name there's a Canadian theme going on but to be honest it still looks and feels just like any other British pub and judging by the chat of the boy who started chatting to me on the way up from the jacks, has it's fair share of local barflies as well as lots of Canadians in too see the hockey from the night before.

Unlike other horror reviews, the hockey was on at the right time & we even managed to get seats with a good view of a screen (which I believe wouldn't have happened back in the day). We were drinking Molson Dry which was fine but I've got the feeling it was just some random British brew with a Molson sticker on the tap. I had the poutine which was decent enough but just didn't taste the same with British style gravy on it!

Thomson's, Edinburgh

Place is ace for a quiet pint. Always pretty busy when I've been in but no bother getting served.

Kind of place you can take your girl.

Ale is top notch.

The Haymarket Bar, Edinburgh

A good meeting point for a night in town. Ales are generally up to scratch and I've always found the bar pretty well staffed.

Excellent atmosphere when the football's on so imagine it'd be the same for the rugger. No chance of getting a seat when Scotland are playing but there are so may TVs you literally get a good view from anywhere in hear.

My one criticism would be that sometimes they leave the music on with the football on mute but then I guess the world doesn't really revolve around us sports fans!

The Barfly Club, Chalk Farm

The bar itself is a right dive and the selection pretty poor but I've given this a good mark on the basis that the music was ace, the poeple a laugh and the bands playing up stairs brilliant.

Well worth a visit for some new music and a bit banter.

Ice Wharf, Camden

Have to agree with some of the previous posts- staff we're awful. Boy running the show didn't seem interested, no queue management and the barmaid didn't even know the beer I was trying to order (which was off anyway!).

Food was alright though and fairly cheap.

Middle of the road but that's what you expect with a chain pub.

The Bow Bar, Edinburgh

Best real ale & malt whisky pub in Edinburgh! A victim of it's own success this place can get really busy and especially at weekends it's standing room only.

Still the best though, the staff are decent and there are usually enough of them that you don't have to wait too long to get served. The decor may be old fashioned but at least it's unique- a good collection of old pub mirrors are real old school tables screwed to the floor. A good rotation of guest beers & a 'Malt of the Month' offer mean you're always spoilt for choice at the Bow.

Not to be missed.

Teviot Row House, Edinburgh University

By far the best union, not just within Edinburgh University but the city as a whole (and I should know having been to all of them!). There's something for everyone here from a quiet local style pub on the 3rd floor to the Sportsmans Bar with arcades and oodles of pool tables in the basement. Many a Friday evenings have been whittled away here, and there's usually some live music then too. I miss the place since I graduated!

Meadow Bar, Edinburgh

Don't believe the hype.

22 Apr 2005 18:36

The Pear Tree, Edinburgh

One of the top drinkers in the Edinburgh Uni area, spending an afternoon in the beer garden here is a bit of a rite of passage for students here. They've got a canopy and heaters for winter now as well but it just aint the same as a bright sunny day. As for inside, decent enough but can get bloody crowded if the weather turns and everyone heads inside. Admittedly, it is a bit pricey but more than worth it. Top pub!

The Union Rooms, Newcastle

As has already been said, head here to kill time before that train home. Decent enough selection though I did notice a distinct lack of seating in the particular 'room' I enjoyed my pint in.

22 Apr 2005 18:29

Varsity, Aberystwyth

Nice, youthful clientele and from what I remember decent, friendly bar staff.

22 Apr 2005 18:26

Yr Hen Orsaf, Aberystwyth

The usual Spoons offering, the bonus being the heated outdoor area which is basically on the station platfrom.

22 Apr 2005 18:25

Scholars, Aberystwyth

A bustling town centre pub witha cosier atmosphere than some of the larger Aber pubs. The 1 a bottle permanent price deal makes it a top place to start a night on the town.

22 Apr 2005 18:23

The Academy, Aberystwyth

Not a bad drinker and the Church thing is quite a novelty first time round. Pints not great though.

22 Apr 2005 18:20

Footlights Bar and Grill, Edinburgh

This has place has been done up recently and it's a real improvement. Good location near the other main drinking areas (Rose St, Lothian Rd, Grassmarket) is a plus too. Decent young crowd at weekends make this place a good pre-club venue.

Goose On Union Street, Glasgow

A solid city centre megapub within easy of walking distance of the main train and bus stations. The usual range of pints and pub grub and very reasonable prices and spirits served in 50ml measures. There's also an off-license inside if you wish to continue the drinking at home. Watch out for the Canadians!

11 Jan 2005 08:53

The Bow Bar, Edinburgh

Loads of whisky to chose from and a good range of guest and regular ales all served by decent barstaff. One of the best places in the city for a real pint in a real pub.

The Centurion, Edinburgh

A standard local type pub serving the regualar range of pints etc and a small range of pub grub. Has one of the ultramodern jukeboxes that plays thousands of tracks. Also a decent football pub, welcoming fans of all clubs (though no colours in the evening). A lot of supporters buses pick up here and a few local amateur teams come in for a pint afterwards. Got a soft spot for the 'Centy' as my dad's mates all drink in here so I suppose I'm not the best judge.

6 Jan 2005 15:55

MacGochans, Tobermory

A nice presentable pub serving a decent pint. The other places in Tobermory all seem to be hotel bars. A wee bit on the cold side but I guess it was December. The beer garden has a great view of the harbour and would be ideal on a warm summer day.

23 Dec 2004 12:44

The MacDonald Arms Hotel, Tobermory

Don't let the ramshackle exterior and spartan decor fool you, this is the place to go in Tobermory. Nice small size and the open wood fire only adds to the coziness of the place. Food menu limited but decent enough and a good range of ales. What makes the MacDonald stand out is its excellent whisky collection. I recommend one of Mull's own single malts!

23 Dec 2004 12:41

Rainbow Inn, Edinburgh

Not one of my favourites, I only go to visit friends who drink here. Popular with young rogues and other older rogues. I've seen a bit of trouble in the past but to be honest, you're fine if you don't look for it. Cheap pints and a large choice of food and always plenty of seats/bar space available. Avoid at weekends where disastrous karaokes and discos send the punters packing elsewhere.

13 Dec 2004 18:02

The Railway Tavern, Falkirk

Bit of a kip. Handy for a pint before the match or before the train but that's all it really has going for it. Asked for Tennents, got Guiness.

13 Dec 2004 17:57

Hogshead, Edinburgh

One of the better 'chain' pubs I've visited. Decent range of guest ales and solid food menu. A mate met Andrew Marr from the BBC here once.

13 Dec 2004 17:53

Corstorphine Inn, Edinburgh

A busy local pub serving the best range of real ales and bottled lagers in the area. Popular with old and young quaffers alike, the 'Corrie' also has a good range of steaks etc and a nice wee no smoking area if you fancy eating in peace. Only negatives are a lack of seats during busy spells and the fact that it isn't too hot for watching football in. Still a top pub though. A pub for every occasion- be it taking the girl out, a family meal or a few jars with the lads. Recommended.
