The Land of Liberty, Peace and Plenty, Heronsgate
The beers here are ok, but when I buy a pint I just want to drink it, not listen to a twenty minute lecture from the barmaid about how, where and by whom the beer is brewed.
I'm all for knowledgable bar staff, but this lot are OTT.

THE CRICKETERS EH ?
I asked the bar man what the state of play was. He didn't know what I was talking about.
In fact he did't know who was playing: he didn't even know that the Somerset County Cricket ground was just a couple of hundred yards away.
He did't seem to know much at all

Just a wee bit chavvy. Not particularly pleasant.
Would not recommend to anyone I liked.

Perhaps it's too soon to mak a judgement on this pub, as new owners have only recently taken over.
It's got to be an improvement on the previous owners who were pretty dire, it has to be said.

Lovely setting, a bit off the beaten track, but it still gets crowded in the evenings and at week ends.
The food is good if a little pricey.
The beers are always in good nick.
Quite possibly the best thing about this pub is the setting in a steep combe, with beautiful views across to Minehead.

Quite possibly in line for the "Best Pub in Hillcommon" award.
If not the winner, then definately the second best.
How many pubs in Hillcommon? I hear you ask.

Nice pub, food looks good and the beer (Hall & Woodhouse) are O.K.
Pity its stuck right next to a supermarket car park

The Ring of Bells, Norton Fitzwarren
Once again I find myself in almost total agreement with luvapint.
Nothing more to say

Camra seem to have taken this pub under their wing and given it numerous awards. Can't see why.
It seems that people think it is a good pub because CAMRA have said it is.
Beers are ok, but the quality seems inconsistant, which debars it from any awards in my book

Nice pub in a nice village.
All I can say is that I can confirm what others have said. The food is good, but pricey and not really great value for money, and the sevice is poor and slow.
Pity really, could be much better

The Rose and Crown, Huish Episcopi
Another gem of a pub. Absolutely charming. This is a real pub for genuine people
If it's the modern chain pub with plastic food and mass produced "ambience" that you like, you won't like it here, but if you like good beer and good company, this is the place for you.

Must be one of the best pubs in Somerset
Beer, food, service and environment are all nigh on faultless. Always stop off here if I'm passing, sometimes when I not.

Attended a very interesting quiz here last night.
Alas we didn't win, but it still made for a very enjoyable evening.
Makes a change from the usual pub quiz.

ANY NEGATIVE POSTINGS ON THIS PUB ARE REMOVED WITHIN HOURS

Yes, I agree with yo-yo. It is very much a food pub, and judging by the menu perhaps a tad on the pricey side. There's no problem just dropping in for a beer though.

The Lamb and Flag, Blagdon Hill
Nice old fashioned pub. Beers have always been in good nick, no fancy frills here, just a good honest pub.
21 May 2007 15:05
The post given in this pub's details above is incorrect. I think it must be TA1 1JJ.
It is in fack slap bang in the middle of Taunton, which is a pity because it's a real dump.

I can't report that the choice of ales is "fine", nor that they well kept, which is hardly surprising. I had a pint at about 4 p.m. and it was the first one of the day.In fact I doubt if they had sold much of the stuff on the previous evening. I guess that if you go there just as a new cask has been put on, the beer might be O.K. but I wouldn't bank on it.
15 May 2007 17:46
Even though it was lunchtime, just about everyone in this pub was pretty well oiled. I got the feeling things could kick off at any minute. Maybe it's always like this. Didn't hang around

They may not encourage strangers to drink here, but the locals seem to get plenty of encouragement, not that seem to need much by the state of them.

The Crown and Sceptre, Taunton
More like a licensed television lounge than a pub.
Some real ales available, but an uninspiring choice and not in the best of condition.
15 May 2007 00:20
A somewhat less than average pub.
I went to this pub when the cricked was rained off.
I would have rather sat in the rain.

The town's second wetherspoons pub. It's an enormous great cavern. As it's a wetherspoon pub I knew I was in for a long wait, but this place is slow even by spoons standards.
I don't know how many tables there are in this place possibly a hundred, I don't know, but do you think I could find a clean one?
No chance, everywhere were dirty glasses and plates, and staff standing around doing nothing.
14 May 2007 21:46
I totally agree with everything said by the previous contributor.
I would also like to add that if you fancy a pint served this way, check out the angle at which the cask is lying at. When they are nearly empty the rear of the cask is lifted up so they can get all of the slops out. It's best therefore to choose a beer from a cask that is lying horzontal, as this will be newer.
Having said this, I followed my own advice and was still sold a pint of sour beer.
I won't be going back to this pub.
14 May 2007 21:37
I don't know what it was about this place. Not exactly hostile, but not welcoming either, which is a pity because it's a nice rambling sort of a pub.

The Pitcher and Piano, Taunton
Taunton doesn't have much in the way of real ale pubs, but this one is on the "Cask Marque" list, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's a beautiful old building too.
Unfortunately, despite the cask marque stuff, it doesn't actually sell any cask ales, and was full of lager swilling kids.
One to avoid in the future, I think.
14 May 2007 21:29
Two wetherspoons in such a small town?
This is marginally better than the other one, but that's a bit like saying torremolinos is better than Benidorm.
It's all relative.
Relatively speaking, they're both crap.

The Naval and Military, Taunton
The good thing about B.I.T.E. is that when you move to a new town you can check out all the pubs and sort out whats what.
Although no one has said anything good about this place, I still wanted to see what it was like. I have to say it was better than I thought it would be, not great, but not that bad either.
14 May 2007 20:28
I thought I'd give this place a try after reading so much about it.
It's certainly different. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but maybe that's just as well
I didn't eat there but the menu looks good, beer was fine, service exceptional.
A bit of a shock to leave the place and find yourself still in Taunton.
I went in on a sunday night when the quiz was on, but was too late to join in unfortunately.
Must return next week.
14 May 2007 20:22
It's good news that this place has been taken over, and by the folks at the Tarr. Lets hope they make a better job of it than the last lot.
