Boxing Day is Mummers' Day in Padstow. That's folks with blacked-up faces, playing accordions, banging drums, and marching about from pub to pub for sing-songs, and for what I assume to be general merriment. Seems about as harmless as anything involving accordions could reasonably be expected to be though. Whatever, the Old Customs House remains unswerved from its steady course by all of this. Have a St. Austells - they're pretty well all here. Hulots_hat - 26 Dec 2019 20:16 |
After the poor showing in the Harbour we wandered next door to the very impressive Old Customs House. A large corner pub that's been extended over the years and has a very smart glass conservatory dining area, a large dining and seating area through to the left of the bar and an adjoining coffee & cake shop. 8 hand pumps with 5 ales on, all from St Austell brewery. These were Proper Job, HSB, Tribute, Trelawny and my choice which was Grandview @ 5.3% from their small batch brew series. Plenty of staff on meant that service swift and attentive, again very different to next door. After 30 minutes we left just as it was filling up with dog walkers and diners. A really smart pub and the best of the 3 I tried in Padstow in one afternoon. lezford - 30 Sep 2016 14:17 |
Large and professionally run inn on Padstow harbour. This is a pub, restaurant and hotel, so does serve as an old fashioned inn. Service is professional, and the place is clean and well run. The main building is a large stone built custom house right on the corner, with two buildings on one side, and one on the other side, knocked through to create even more space. There is a good atmosphere, and the place is attractively decorated and furnished. A decent range of St Austell beers on offer. An OK place - one of several St Austell pubs in Padstow. The old building has retained its substantial structural features. Some of those have been incorporated into the decor. Otherwise, it's functionally smart and comfortable. The service was efficient, friendly and courteous. The range of St. Austell ales were on offer, perhaps I saw others too, and the one I had was in top form. The atmosphere seemed lively and jolly enough, with chatty types on high chairs at the bar, though not too many to block it. Plenty were eating, but for that it still remained a pub offering decent food, rather than some kind of gastro establishment. I think that the rating is suspiciously low, and I'd give it 7-8/10. eddybeer - 27 Dec 2015 18:54 |
Busy, but service was efficient and friendly. Ale was very good - excellently kept. Obviously a bit of a tourist-trap, but prices not THAT extortionate. Would use this pub again. scoobybooze - 6 Sep 2014 16:51 |
