Great olde worlde pub. Like going back in time. Love it. Johnnytheboy - 30 Jun 2012 18:21 |
We waited for this pub to open as it had been recommended to us. It didn't open on time so we went to Thornford and then came back. Not all it should have been - as has been said already, there are better examples of this type of pub elsewhere in the county. It was an odd mix of rooms - a carpetted lounge with an ingle nook fireplace;through a sliding door into the "games" bar with huge flagstones on the floor and then into a strange pool room which looked like it had been added on in the 1960's. There didn't appear to be any food available and they just sell the one real ale (St.Austell Tribute - OK but nothing special). However, note the old stirrup handpump under the bar counter - you don't see many of these today!! We had the feeling that the licensees were just seeing out their time before retiring and there is no doubt that the pub has potential - the village is long and straggling and most people appeared to work in either nearby Sherborne or Yeovil - both about 3 miles away. The pub probably does alright in the evening and at weekends. Anyway, we went, we supped and we left! mcroyal - 10 Nov 2011 10:27 |
I can sympathise with BobOs position. In an area blessed with a large number of quality pubs offering a good range of well-kept ales the Griffin's Head might appear to be an odd GBG choice. However, the long-serving landlord adopts a sensible ale policy - he only keeps the only handpumped beer because there is simply not the demand to justify selling more beers. In my experience his beer is always tip top. It's far better to have one excellent beer than 10 poor beers. Dartmoor IPA isn't the world's liveliest beer anyway... CJG - 21 Aug 2008 17:33 |
Nice, small village pub with a bit of rural charm but, considering it's in the latest CAMRA guide, I was a tad disappointed to find only one ale on - Dartmoor Brewery's "Dartmoor IPA" - which seemed a little tired to my palate - thank heavens for the Rose and Crown at Trent just down the road!
