Had camped here in the past, but a fire in the kitchen put a stop to the electrics for the camping. Looked at the website two years later, it listed camping. Phoned up, asked if they did camping, NO was the answer before the phone was immediately put down, presumably by the manageress. Ideal place to go if you want to be treated rudely Feed - 17 Oct 2016 18:34 |
The Fox & Hounds is a thatched building set in the countryside just outside of Devizes. The bar/dining area was fairly dark and is lit with candles. It had an overwhelming smell of damp dogs. Food appears to be its prime concern. There are a couple of tables at the front overlooking the car park and fields, with a garden housing an old stagecoach at the rear, along a skittles alley. It's a Wadworth establishment. So the ale choice was IPA, 6X & Swordfish. To my surprise, there were also 2 real ciders - Westons Old Rosie & Lilleys Sunset. The young barmaid/waitress required hope in pouring them and mistakenly rung through a pint on the till, when I'd only ordered a half. The cider choice had clearly flustered her! Nevertheless, I was much more impressed with this pub than I'd initially expected. blue_scrumpy - 10 Jul 2016 14:18 |
More of a weekend and night time pub, there were three Wadworths beers on the handles and service was very friendly. More customers at the weekends, in the evening the tables are candlelit which creates a great atmosphere. Food is excellent and inexpensive. Feed - 19 Nov 2014 09:38 |
Geoff didn't stay! Refurbed and now firmly food orientated and who can blame them. But that doesn't mean you can't wander in for a few of an evening. Clean and comfortable. Good skittle alley. Doggy friendly. whelklocator - 15 Jun 2012 16:13 |
I found the food here to be very good and the staff very friendly. I had deep fried brie with onion marmalade to start, which was delicious. The onion marmalade was very nice and tasted homemade. The 'pan anglais' or breadcrumb coating was coating the cheese properly so the cheese was contained and well melted without spilling out. Was all served on a bed of crisp, well washed salad with cucumber and tomatoes cut into bite-sized pieces and very finely sliced julienne onions which were a nice, slightly crunchy texture combination with the brie. I had creamy mushroom risotto for main course and this was very good too. There was proper arborio rice in the rissotto, not over or under cooked and it had that lovely glutenous sheen to it that good risottos have. Also, it was topped with rocket and parmesan shavings, tossed with a few mustard seeds in a light dressing and the mustard complimented the risotto very well. Homemade sticky toffee pudding with custard for desert which had a nice course texture due to the dates (i believe) and a slightly salty caramel flavour. All in all I was really impressed and thought that the pub was underrated by other reviewers. The landlord said the place had changed hands about seven times in three years so I can only assume the poor reviews were for previous landlords. I was impressed and I've worked as a chef for years. The caravan site is small but has outdoor loo and electrical hook-ups. x0131601 - 8 Jul 2011 20:42 |
