The Fox and Hounds, Devizes
I found the food here to be very good and the staff very friendly. I had deep fried brie with onion marmalade to start, which was delicious. The onion marmalade was very nice and tasted homemade. The 'pan anglais' or breadcrumb coating was coating the cheese properly so the cheese was contained and well melted without spilling out. Was all served on a bed of crisp, well washed salad with cucumber and tomatoes cut into bite-sized pieces and very finely sliced julienne onions which were a nice, slightly crunchy texture combination with the brie. I had creamy mushroom risotto for main course and this was very good too. There was proper arborio rice in the rissotto, not over or under cooked and it had that lovely glutenous sheen to it that good risottos have. Also, it was topped with rocket and parmesan shavings, tossed with a few mustard seeds in a light dressing and the mustard complimented the risotto very well. Homemade sticky toffee pudding with custard for desert which had a nice course texture due to the dates (i believe) and a slightly salty caramel flavour. All in all I was really impressed and thought that the pub was underrated by other reviewers. The landlord said the place had changed hands about seven times in three years so I can only assume the poor reviews were for previous landlords. I was impressed and I've worked as a chef for years. The caravan site is small but has outdoor loo and electrical hook-ups.
