user reviews of the Red Lion, Liskeard

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This was the best pub we went in all day. A basic old skool boozer with locals at the bar and a very good cheap selection of drinks.

Pubs like this are dying but even with Wetherspoons now in town from what I saw I believe this place could survive.

7/10 (first pint so was sober, would have been rated more later on)

While stopping in Liskeard over the weekend, my mate had gone on ahead "not many pubs" he said "there is this rough looking place (thats not the word he used) on the way to the B&B but nothing else I have found", needless to say we went in and the rest has already been posted by MarkfromtheMarsh. Nice beer.

Delightfully basic town centre pub with little to recommend it on the face of it. However, upon reflection, pubs like this don't exist any more. A few locals and bar staff who were fascinated and amazed when two southerners walked in! Choice of two local ales, both well kept, make this a sureal occasion. Not for the faint hearted or those of a la-de-da disposition but I'm glad we made the effort and I urge others to do the same. Boozers like this MUST survive.

Nothing here being done to make this place worth the trip, even after the new management team stepped in. Not only is there a dull drinks selection on offer, but the rooms are poorly lit, lending the overall reception a decidedly frosty - almost menacing - air. This is exacerbated by the staff who must be on a 'no smile' bonus. I doubt even the locals - should they exist - ever feel welcome here.
